About this location
The Devon region
The stunning beaches of North Devon and its world renowned reputation for wildlife, nature and beauty set a most amazing backdrop for the coastal towns and countryside villages that make up the area that is Devon. Whatever the season, there is no better place in England than North Devon.
The coastline is as rugged as it is beautiful dotted with magnificent cliffs, tiny cove and picturesque harbours. It was once the haunt of smugglers, pirates and wreckers and the fascinating history is retold in many small museums along the coast. Today visitors who love Henry Williamson's famous Tarka the Otter can retrace Tarka's journey by following the Tarka Trail.
Appledore is ideally located within easy reach of the harbours of Clovelly and Lynmouth which are also perfect places to relax. Meander through the streets of Lynmouth and take a ride on the unique water powered cliff railway to the twin town of Lynton which is perched high on the cliffs. Clovelly is another of the prettiest coastal village where it feels as if time stood still. The only means of transport on these famous cobbled streets are donkeys and sleds.
Just a short drive from Appledore (approx. 2 miles) is the beach at Westward Ho and surrounding areas are recognised as possibly some of the finest and cleanest in Europe - with two miles of soft golden sand, plenty of rock pools and amazing surf.
A little further afield along the coastline surrounding a natural harbour is Ilfracombe with its Victorian architecture, Esplanade and famous Tunnels Beach. The harbour is always busy with fishing boats sailing in and out.
Appledore itself is a small fishing village that sits at the estuary of the Taw and Torridge river. It has attractive walks along the quay and towards Bideford or Westward Ho! using the footpaths. The quay is actively used by boat owners.
Hidden within its quaint cobbled streets there are a number of interesting art galleries. Appledore is such a busy village it even has its own festivals throughout the year - Visual Arts Festival in May, Regatta Week and Carnival in August and the acclaimed Appledore Book Festival in September.
The village is about 3 miles from Bideford & 10 miles from Barnstaple. There are many attractive areas in the surrounding countryside: Clovelly; the famous picturesque fishing village is 10 miles away. Lundy Island can be visited by ferry from Bideford. Exmoor is only a short drive away. The Eden Project in Cornwall can be visited in a day.
Blue-flag beaches - Croyde, Putsborough, Woolacombe and Saunton Sands are all within easy driving distance, while Westward Ho! Beach is a mere 2 miles away with its championship links golf course, tennis courts and cliff top walks. Other options, if you wanted to venture further afield and experience what the area has to offer include trips to RHS Rosemoor, Tapeley Park, Instow, The Big Sheep, Dartington Crystal, Bucks Mills, The Milky Way Adventure Park to name a few.
