Barn | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
Kay and Andy welcome you to their comfortable and well equipped self-catering properties in the tranquil and picturesque Eden Valley in Cumbria. Originally a 17th-century farmstead, Scalebeck nestles peacefully in the heart of the Eden Valley, just one mile from the pretty village of Great Asby, and surrounded by some of the best local food producers Cumbria has to offer.
Come and relax in Scalebeck's 5-acre grounds... or use as a base to enjoy exploring the nearby Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, and North Pennines. Sit and watch the red squirrels, pheasants, and garden birds... or go hiking, cycling, fishing, or horse riding. It's up to you how active or inactive you want to be!
"The Woodland Cottage" is one of three cottages in the converted hay barn. It shares an entrance porch with barn doors. The property is "upside down" with the open-plan living space taking advantage of the high beamed ceiling. The views from the front are across open farmland, usually with sheep or cows in residence. Downstairs is a double bedroom; a super king zip and link room (which can also be arranged as a twin); and the bathroom (bath with shower over). Please note the double bed is usually positioned against one wall - however on request we can arrange the room with narrow access to both sides of the bed.
The gardens are a haven for wildlife and birds. Among our many regular visitors are red squirrels, deer, rabbits, hares, foxes, pheasants, woodpeckers, buzzards, and a plethora of garden birds. We can let you know the best place to spot them if you are interested.
All guests are free to use the games room (with table tennis and pool table), and shared picnic tables and BBQ in the garden. There is also a coin-operated laundry with washing machine and tumble dryer. Free phone available in the laundry for guest use. Cot and high chair available on request.
Please note that the garden has an unfenced pond (some way away from the property) and an open stream with water level rising rapidly after heavy rain.

The Cumbria/Lake District
The Eden Valley is a beautiful part of Cumbria, nestled between the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines area of outstanding natural beauty. As one of the least populated parts of England it is peaceful and relaxing, with many quiet narrow lanes and conservation villages that have hardly changed in 300 years. The region is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, and sampling some really fantastic farmers markets, local food suppliers, and restaurants. If you love the Lake District but not the crowds then Scalebeck is perfect for you. In less than an hour you can be climbing the peaks near Keswick or Windermere - and come back to a quiet peaceful retreat at the end of a hard day's walking. Our nearest lake is Ullswater, a mere 40 minutes drive away. A similar distance away in a different direction and you could be in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales or high up in the Pennines. Plenty of options according to where the weather looks best!
Appleby in Westmorland
Within the Eden Valley there are plenty of local attractions to explore - castles in various states of ruin including the fabulous Lowther Castle estate; parks and gardens including the National Trust's Acorn Bank and Askham Hall; wildlife centres including Wetheriggs Animal Sanctuary and the Bird of Prey centre; and of course numerous walks along the river Eden or up on the neighbouring fells. For foodies, look out for Kennedys Fine Chocolates, Bessy Beck Trout Farm, Orton Farmers Market, Highcup Winery, and Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream Farm (all within about 20min drive). In the summer there are plenty of fairs, shows and festivals to enjoy including the Westmorland Show and the Appleby Horse Fair. We are members of "Nuture Eden" encouraging sustainable tourism and spending less time in the car. We are working with them to develop of "doorstep guide" of things to do from our properties including walks and cycle rides.
