The Cumbria/Lake District region

The Eden Valley is set in a tranquil corner of East Cumbria nestling in between The Lake District, The Yorkshire Dales National Park and the North Pennines; all areas of outstanding natural beauty and a lovely holiday destination at any time of the year.
There’s plenty to occupy visitors from cycling the quiet country lanes (Try the Eden Valley Circular Cycle Route) to taking gentle riverside strolls, or maybe its pony trekking, fishing or golf and despite its rural location there’s plenty of visitor attractions close by.
Travelling among undulating meadows visitors will come across charming villages which are dotted throughout the area and busy market towns such as Penrith, renowned for its specialist shops, history and architecture. Picturesque Appleby with its 12th century church, Norman Castle and wide medieval main street, lays to the south east of Penrith, here at Appleby station you can catch the train for a ride along the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line.
The Eden Valley truly is Cumbria’s ‘Hidden Gem’ which maintains the illusion of untouched remoteness despite its extremely accessible location.
The Appleby in Westmorland area
Appleby-in-Westmorland lies in a loop of the river Eden and is overlooked by the Pennine range with the Lake District Fells showing on the western horizon, just a few miles away.
The town is an ideal centre for tourists of all types and is the starting point for many dozens of walks over the surrounding fell countryside.
It has kept its old world charm and the people of Appleby are amongst the friendliest you can find. With Castle and Keep at the Brow of the Main Street and the Town at its foot it seems as if time has stood still. A walk up Boroughgate can transport you back into Medieval England, while the charm of the riverside walks provides an opportunity to experience the tranquillity of the countryside within five minutes of the town centre.
APPLEBY has not been swamped by tourism to the point of strangulation and visitors will find that all the town's facilities are available to them.

We came to the end of the road, turned up the hill towards the cottage and couldnt believe we were in the middle of these beautiful surroundings and how quiet it was. The moment we opened the door to the cottage we were pleasantly surprised as the bright decor was welcoming and the bedrooms were lovely. We went up the stairs to the sitting area and turned around to see a lovely ktichen area with a nice packet of shortbread biscuits and some milk provided as an added touch. Everything you need in the kitchen to cook is there and also a dishwasher and washing machine, again kept to a high standard. We had some great days out walking, on the bikes and we climbed the nine standards which has some of the best views we have seen. I would recommend this cottage to get away couples or a family with young children as you have so much nature and wilderness to explore. We are definitely booking for next year and have already recommended it to all our friends. |
