The Cumbria/Lake District

Cumbria and The Lake District, also commonly known as The Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes and its mountains (or fells), and its associations with the early 19th century poetry and writings of William Wordsworth and the Lake Poets.

The Lake District National Park which was designated as a National Park in 1951. It is the largest of thirteen National Parks in England and Wales, and second largest in the UK (after the Cairngorms). It lies entirely within the modern county of Cumbria, shared historically by the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire. All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the National Park, including Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. It also contains the deepest and longest lakes in England.

Appleby in Westmorland

Ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley, the attractive, rural villages of Knock and Milburn are just five miles from the historic town of Appleby. Situated in the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland was originally the county town of Westmorland and is a major stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway -one of the most beautiful train journeys in Britain. A vast number of these old steam trains travel along this famous line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct, giving patrons a chance to see the landscape from a whole new perspective. People who visit Appleby in July will experience the Jazz Festival – an event that is fast becoming a popular attraction – whilst throughout the year guests can enjoy a walk on the Pennine Way at Dufton or explore one of the local cycle trails. Pooley Bridge, Penrith and the Lake District are all within easy reach, making this is an ideal holiday location.
