The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The Cote d'Azur has over 300 days of sunshine a year and has been a favourite holiday destination for many years. The immediate area has several world famous destinations, as well many lesser well known attractions and is home to many arts and crafts. Vallauris (famous for pottery), Biot (famous for glass) and Grasse (famous for perfume) are all very close. Many well known artists have either visited or lived in the area and some of their works can be found in the local museums.
The southern alps are one hour and a half's drive away - perfect for skiing in the winter and walking in spectacular scenery at other times of the year. The hills between the coast and the mountains are also ideal walking country where many picturesque perched villages such as Valbonne, Mougins, Gourdon, St Paul de Vence and Tourettes sur Loup can be found.
There is a frequent train service along the coast which can take you to Cannes (12 km, 10 minutes) which is home to the world famous film festival as well as many other conferences and festivals throughout the year; Monaco (44 km, 45 minutes) home to the rich and famous and the Grand Prix. and Italy (1 1/2 hours).
The bus service is also very good and the fare has recently been reduced to 1 euro per person per journey.
Antibes / Centre Ville area
Antibes is an ancient town dating back over 2000 years whose medival ramparts are still in tact and surround the old town - which contains a maze of cobbled streets and squares filled with restaurants, bars and shops. It is also home to the Picasso museum and a provencal market which sells fresh fruit and vegetables every morning and an arts & crafts every afternoon.
Being on the coast there lots of watersports available and there are several golf courses in the area, the closest of which is about a 20 minute bus ride away. Oh and don't forget that the beach is only a 10 minute walk!
Boat trips can also be taken from nearby Juan Les Pins to the car-free islands of Cannes, Monaco to the east and St Tropez to the south west.
Firework festivals are held in Antibes, as well as other towns along the coast, through July and August and jazz festivals are held in Juan Les Pins and Nice.
