This apartment with stunning views of the old town of Antibes, Port Vauban and the mountains, might just be the place to pen that slim volume of poetry, or complete the final movement of a major orchestral work, err, or mebbe just watch Eastenders Omnibus edition. Overlooking the film stars favourite restaurant 'The Michelangelo' or chez Mamo to the initiated; Karl Largerfeld held an outdoor party in the little park opposite last year, you could have taken a few closeup photos from the window and told all your friends you were invited ! In spring and autumn marvel at the thousands of Swifts or Swallows (not sure which) as they dip and dive in a perfect tight aerobatic formation right in front of your window.

Early risers can marvel at the sun as it levitates above the Gormenghast skyline, a perspective only viewed by a handful of Antiboise.

Needless to say you know all about the overpriced Marche Provencal, the collection of boring ceramic plates in the Picasso Museum, and the dog sh*t in the streets, all part of the charm of course. And whatever you do, DON'T PARK YOUR CAR IN THE PARKING DE LA POSTE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT or you will find in the morning that it has been replaced by a market stall selling cheap plastic sunglasses. Car retrieval complicated and astronomically expensive.

Further details indoors

The apartment is on the 3rd floor, though the stairs are a fairly comfortable rise, just the exercise needed to compensate for that extra pain au chocolat, or the 2nd bottle of chilled rose. The building houses about 8 small apartments on each floor, and was originally built for local workers, called the 'Maison des Ouvriers' probably dates from the 1890's. The interior of the building is regularly cleaned, but it's not exactly Cap d'Antibes, more Robert Doisneau; interestingly odd !

Further details outdoors

There is very handy parking in front of the building, where an interesting form of double parking exists, namely, a car will always be blocking you from leaving, (only during the day) but with a phone number placed in the window, you just have to know how call and say 'move your bloody car' in French, otherwise very handy, as once parked up and car unloaded, you won't need it again until you leave. The public transport is excellent €1 anywhere on the buses, and local buses are free. The train service is brilliant, always sit on the right hand side of the train going to Monaco, and on the left coming back, superb views.

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region

La Cote d'Azur has one of the best climates of Europe, year round sunshine, and with only the odd day or two of rain in winter, you can be assured of fine weather all year round. Cannes, Nice, Grasse and Monaco all within easy reach by car, bus or train. Ventimiglia, San Remo and Imperia can also be reached easily by train or car, there is almost too much to see and do ! Some of the best art museums to be found anywhere, La Galerie Maeght in St. Paul de Vence, the Musee Ferdinand Leger in Biot, the Museums of Modern Art, Chagall, Matisse in Nice, and my favourite, Renoirs house in Cagnes sur Mer, get there as soon as it opens in the morning and you'll have the house and gardens all to yourself.

Antibes

Antibes has always been famous for its restaurants, night life, festivals and artistic connections. The Picasso museum dominates the town, though I have always found the building to be much more interesting than its content ! Check out where Nicolas de Stael jumped out the window on the ramparts and sadly died, here was a man who painted the best pictures of Antibes.

The apartment is on the same street where Graham Greene used to walk along every day to buy his baguette. I saw him on several occasions, a tall and very imposing fellow with piercing blue eyes, not the sort of chap you'd stop and ask for his autograph ! I'm sitting here in the apartment, it's December 16th and the window is wide open, in fact all of the photos (except the two yacht pictures) were taken today. Of course, don't forget the many beaches and wonderful walks round the Cap d'Antibes, you can count on warm water right up until October, and the more hardy can swim all year round !

"A great loft apartment in a convenient location and very kind hosts"

A great renovated loft apartment on the top floor of an older building on the edge of the old town of Antibes. There is a terrific view of the Picasso Museum and the old bell tower. The apartment is very comfortable and well equipped and Hugh and Odette will go the extra mile to make your stay totally enjoyable. We rented the apartment for a month and would highly recommend it. Many thanks to Hugh and Odette for their gracious welcome. Jim & Helene, Toronto, Canada

Jim and Helene, thanks a lot for your very kind review. Odette will email you with her thanks. Best regards Hugh
