RELAXING HOLIDAY - The barrio of San Juan is a peaceful place, and one can take advantage of the large patio to relax, sunbathe & , If you decide to stay in, how about a nice BBQ (all items provided), a nice dip in the HOT TUB/JACUZZI or in the pool, on a nice warm evening. “ROOF TOP APARTMENT” - 'WALL TO WALL SUNSHINE”
"The Crossroads of Andalucia" Antequera is roughly equidistant from Cordoba,Granada,Malaga & Sevilla, these being 1 to 1.5 hrs. drive. There is also an excellent (and cheap) rail link to these cities. We live in a little 'Barrio' like a 'hamlet' just a 5 mins walk from the middle of the town centre. 'Cuesta Real' is the first street to have been built outside the 'Castle Walls' therefore known as 'The Royal Hill, in a dip between 'El Torcal' (a huge Mountain Range,National Park and Nature Reserve.) which is appx. 1,700 mtrs above sea level., and the 'Roman/Moorish Castle'. Our home can be seen at the foot of the Roman/Moorish Castle, Antequera is also renowned for it's wonderful monuments, Churches and Convents .
The Antequera / Barrio San Juan, Antequera area
San Juan is in the 'Monumental/Conservation Area' so strict building regulations are in order. Also known as a 'White Town', the door and window surrounds are usually painted in Orange, this is to ward off 'Evil Spirits'. Since we arrived in 2003 we have seen many changes. Initially it was like stepping back in time by 30 yrs. Now, we have huge advancements medically, technologically, sports, families, to mention a few. Yet, one still gets these little pockets here and there where time has stood still, and it is wonderful to see and partake of that experience. Everyone is very helpful here, even more so if they see you trying to speak their language. They themselves now know how difficult it is for you, as they now are trying to learn English. This is why we chose this Barrio.San Juan(St John the Baptist) who is also the 'Patron Saint of Antequera' . Town is a 5 mins walk (but it a steep hill, if you go the other way down the 'The Palm Avenue' takes slightly longer, but isn't so steep Taxis - from anywhere in Antequera to here should cost you approx. 5 e, Locally we have the following shops - (There is a list on the notice board of shop names, owners name, etc.)
TOBACONNIST (ESTANCO)
CHEMIST (FARMACIA)
BAR SAN JUAN .
GROCERY SHOP
ICE CREAM SHOP
The Spanish mainly eat between 13.00 and 15.00, & this is theeir main meal of the day, not like we take it at night. In the evenings though you have lovely bars which serve tapas or half racions..
If you like fish this is plentiful as our fish comes directly from the docks in Malaga every day.
ANTEQUERA is full of wonderful historic Churches,Convents & Museums, many of which have been fully restored & the town has a lively cafe/bar life. We are now coming up for Easter (Holy Week) & there is nothing more spectaluar than seeing the devotion of the Spanish people. We have a large Agricultural Show in April/May. Main Feria for a week at the end of August and a The annual Blues Festival is held in June/July A Medieval Market where people come from all over Spain, bringing their produce & crafts to sell & most of the Concerts are held out doors & are free. The surrounding attraction & places to visit are too numerous to list but we have prepared files with details of 'Places to Visit', like Sevilla, Cordoba, Malaga, Granada and it's interesting attractions. For activites you are totally spoilt, as you can have anything from a Relaxing Holiday - day in the Apartment reading, sun bathing, Hot Tub/ Jacuzzi or a plunge in the pool, It is quite quiet as the Apartment is on the 3rd floor & you tend not to hear the day to day activities. Activities Holiday - golf, rock climbing, beach activities, tennis, horse riding, etc.

MALAGA AIRPORT - 40 mins drive from Antequera, mostly dual carriageway. Follow the motorway signs for Sevilla and Cordoba all the way from the airport. After approx. 40km the motorway goes up a long, steep incline and near the top splits. Right is signed Granada, and straight on is for Sevilla & Cordoda which you should follow. After 13 km the motorway starts to go steeply downhill through a wooded pine area.
About 2/3 of the way down you will see a RH slip road clearly marked Antequera. Follow this road towards the approaches to Antequera through a large industrial estate, heading for the town centre or Centro Ciudad. You will see the castle on the hill as you reach the town and you should make for this. If you get lost ask for the "Barrio San Juan" or call us and we will come out to meet you. We have 'off street' parking on a hard-stand at the back of our property for your use.
The main airlines to Malaga are:EASYJET, RYANAIR, BMI BABY AND MONARCH which depart from most UK airports, depending on where you live. There are also scheduled flights by British Airways, Iberia and Air Lingus to name a few.
Although one doesn't necessarily need a car if staying in Antequera, it is recommended if you are planning on going to places like Cordoba, Granada, Malaga, Sevilla, The Torcal mountains, The Lakes or the beach, as some of these cannot be reached by public transport.

The apartment is very well equiped, really comfortable and well situated with views over the local area and to the hills beyond from the spacious private terrace. The info and fotos on the website are absolutely accurate. Tom and Frances were excellent hosts and enjoyed sharing their love and knowledge of the area. Tom took time to give us a short aclimatisation trip. We flew into Malaga Airport and Tom's driving instructions to the apartment were spot on. Chose Antequera as a base for touring Andalucia but found the town itself charming and worthy of a visit in itself. |
