The Fife region

The East Neuk is a popular destination for golf, arts festivals, music and history. Being on the coastline and sheltered we can have some glorious summers.

Fife has a wealth of places to explore from Pittenweem with their annual Arts Festival. 2011 saw installations by Helen Denerley, Kate Downie and Alex Muir. The Fife Coastal Path with her many little fishing villages all bustling with activity. Sample freshly cooked lobster from Crail harbour's Lobster Shed

Children will adore the Blue Flag beaches where you can walk or play for miles on end.

Golf is a major part of Fife and her history. St Andrews being the Golf Mecca with world famous courses and has even hosted the Open Championship.

Cellardyke is a peaceful fishing village but with a very active arts community. The Haarfest in August is a brilliant folk-pop festival by the seaside. For those who like a good old fashioned family holiday, nothing beats a Janetta's ice-cream from Lisa's Parlour and then admiring the boats at Anstruther harbour. Our family favourite! And you can't fail to mention fish and chips as this is a "must-do" when in Anstruther. Be prepared to queue but the wait is worth it.

"Truly Excellent!"

Just 1 minute walk to the harbour and the local pub/restaurant, this was a lovely well-placed location. Though we didn't have a sea view (other than a glimpse down an alleyway opposite) this didn… More

"Pure relaxation and a wonderful family holiday by the seaside."

We have previously stayed at Heron House for an Autumn weekend break and thought this time we would take our greyhound, toddler and baby. We had a brilliant week and didn't want to go home. Just seeing the sea when you wake up was relaxing and it is such a peaceful part of Cellardyke. The streets are quite narrow but it was never a problem. Our toddler loved the Cellardyke play park, East Neuk Outdoor's bouncy castle and the daily ice-cream trips. The Pittenweem Arts Festival was a great day out and we walked along the coastline instead of driving. Not the easiest with a buggy but definitely worth avoiding the parking. Shell Bay was a brilliant beach with stunning views. We struggled to find any beaches locally that would accept a dog in August. Which was abit frustrating.
Heron House lended itself well to a family holiday. The kitchen was big enough for a highchair plus dog bed. The beds were really comfy and there was loads of room for the travel cot. A stairgate was provided at the top floor bedroom which we used for our toddler. To be honest we just collapsed every night having spent the days exploring the East Neuk. The Haven Pub is just down the road so it was handy for a pint in the beer garden plus they are child-friendly.

We are lucky in the East Neuk to have so many Blue Flag beaches. Shell Bay and Tentsmuir are further afield but both wonderful places to walk your dog.
