Or to visit a castle & the extensive Roman City of Conimbriga followed by a delicious 4 course dinner at one of the excellent restaurants near to Casa Bedrock. The options are endless; days out, picnics in beautiful locations, a choice of 25 walks + many other activity options. We hand it to you on a plate. Do as little or as much as you like.
Our secure family friendly swimming pool area which will be completed in May 2014 has 2 pools. Imagine…. You are relaxing beside a stream on a warm summer day. Water cascades gently down a huge limestone rock, mixing with the soothing sounds of birdsong & the murmur of rustling leaves from a nearby bay tree….
To maintain the beauty of our natural landscape we worked closely with a local pool construction company to create a special environment - peaceful & tranquil. The family friendly pool area will be completed in March 2014 and has 2 pools + 2 water features.
Our main pool is 8m long & 4m wide (26 feet long & 13 feet wide) Depth is variable 1.1m to 1.5m (3ft 6 inches to 5 feet) & is accessed via steps into the shallow end or swimming pool ladder into the deep end.
From here you can watch your children splashing around in their own separate, shallow 2.5 x 1.5m (8 feet x 5 feet) pool which has a waterfall feature specially designed to keep them happy as they play with the water which cascades down a series of small stone ridges.
Both pools are fresh & pure, cleaned throughout the day by our filtration system.
Nearby, water tumbles down a huge limestone boulder into a small pool. The whole area, illuminated after dark, is very atmospheric & wonderful for bathing in the evening.
Child safety is paramount. To achieve maximum security without spoiling the beauty of the pool we have installed a 1.1m high toughened glass safety barrier with a lockable gate.
The natural mediterranean blue green colour of our pools is created by using special sand coloured linings - a recreation of what crystal clear water looks like on a beach of clean white / yellow sand - so obvious when you think about it! Our limestone effect paving, although artificial, has been specially selected to create a random pattern & blends in beautifully with our natural limestone walls, rock features & ancient olive trees. We value the beauty of our landscape & wish to create an environment as natural & peaceful as possible.
Warm summer evenings at Casa Bedrock are a delight. Sit on the barbecue terrace or around the swimming pool & enjoy the glow from our garden & pool lights as they softly illuminate the limestone features & olive trees. In May & June, observe the spectacle of flashing fireflies dancing through the trees or wander down into the lower garden; an ideal place to star gaze. Raise your eyes to the heavens & you'll see an amazing spectacle, deep into The Milky Way, clusters of stars, sharp as diamonds against an inky black sky - real depth, not the superficial sprinkling of stars seen in skies polluted by city lights & exhaust fumes. And when it's time for bed... enjoy deep relaxing sleep in our air conditioned bedrooms.
Casa Bedrock is also ideal for winter breaks. The large lounge with its vaulted ceiling has a very powerful & efficient wood burning stove which is fuelled with seasoned olive logs from our well stocked wood store. The stove has an outer chamber which recoups the radiant heat from the main chamber & blows it out into the room via 2 powerful fans. The warm air can be felt 7 metres away on the sofa! Very cosy on cool winter evenings!

Need to know something about us?
My wife Corinne and I are from England and have lived in Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales for 29 years and have 2 sons & 1 grandchild. We're surrounded by beautiful countryside so when we decided to look for a property overseas we were very hard to please. Like many people, we'd watched countless episodes of 'A Place in the Sun' during long winter evenings but never believed we would do anything about it. We initially looked in Spain but whilst visiting Portugal in 2007, we fell in love with this area, it's scenery, tranquility, friendly locals and of course the great weather. We wanted a property which was detached and private but not isolated, with characterful garden, great views, good restaurants & local amenities. The property had to have character but also be modern, not much to ask then!
Why did we buy a house in this location?
Although we like the sea, we also love the hills and river beaches. This location provides easy access to everything we and our family enjoy including the fabulous Silver Coast. We saw Casa Bedrock and the views from the garden on the Internet whilst it was being built in 2008. It is located in a beautiful conservation area where planning laws are strict. The developer takes great pride in his work and can only build on the footprint of earlier dwellings or renovate existing buildings which he does superbly and with great care. Casa Bedrock was designed by a local architect who has created a unique property, even managing to incorporate some limestone features whilst retaining as much of the original character and old walls as possible.
What are the unique benefits of the property?
Peace and quiet, great barbecues, good local restaurants and lots of places to see and things to do including a few walks are what we require from a holiday. We work hard and play hard and therefore need a place to which we can retreat and feel at home. This is high on our list of essentials and we truly believe we have achieved it with Casa Bedrock. We love our 'get away from it all' villa and are sure that you will too!

The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
The surrounding area is beautiful and diverse, ranging from pastoral valleys containing orchards, vineyards and olive groves, through deep gorges with waterfalls and tranquil pools for bathing, or to bare mountainsides with exposed limestone and miles of tracks and paths offering exciting opportunities for walks and exploration ( 2 x small rucksacks with sufficient room for drinks & sandwiches are provided for your convenience.)
In spring & summer months the ground is alive with wild flowers growing through & around areas of limestone paving which are literally 'on the doorstep'.
When you first arrive, you can't fail to notice the shepherds track which runs behind the back of the villa. It winds along, through & across limestone paving between dry stone walls & links with other lanes & tracks, ideal for an evening stroll after dinner or a much longer walk for the more adventurous.
Although the coast is only 40 minutes away, many of our guests have been quite content to use the local river beaches. They're all located in beautiful surroundings & are a speciality in this area of Portugal, being incredibly well organised & most of them having cafe's, changing facilities, & toilets. Details of these are also available in the guidebook.
If pretty towns with castles are your thing then there is no shortage of these. The closest is Penela, a lovely picturesque little town which nestles below it's well preserved medieval castle. It's an ideal place for an evening out, where you can sit as the sun dips below the horizon, taking the heat out of the day as a warm glow spreads across the valley & picks out the mountains of the Serra da Lousa away to the east.
We think that the most outstanding benefit of this area is it's diversity, which enables you to tailor your holiday to suit the whole family regardless of age. The aforementioned free guidebook will be a big help in this respect & your only problem will be deciding what to do first!
The section above should give a 'feel' of what the area has to offer but here are a few more details:
Shops & Restaurants:
Although the villa is peaceful, private & surrounded by beautiful countryside it is not isolated. Restaurants are only a 5 minute drive away & the small local town of Ansiao can be reached in only 10 minutes. Here you'll find some great restaurants & an excellent takeaway - no burgers - just high quality freshly prepared food such as roast chicken & all the trimmings. If you prefer to barbecue, the Intermarche is well stocked with everything you need. The butcher & fishmonger are happy to prepare cuts of meat to your liking.
We are on the very edge of the hillside village of Outeiro which has spectacular views into the valley. All roads leading to it are well maintained & very quiet. We have the advantage of no through traffic & therefore noise from vehicles is almost non existent.
Many people choose Casa Bedrock because it offers the opportunity to experience something different from the usual 'resort' based holiday.
You won't be amongst the crowds here. In fact you're unlikely to meet anyone at all during your walks through the stunning countryside apart from the occasional shepherdess or someone working the land, bringing in the corn or haymaking by hand with a long scythe.

"Casa Bedrock is a great base for a holiday in the 'real' heart of Portugal. Quiet and with fantastic views we just drank in the atmosphere of the olive groves around us. The property is very well furnished and equipped and clearly well cared for. The success of our holiday was very largely due to the comprehensive area guide book compiled by the owners containing a wide range of things to do and see - we never needed to 'wonder where to go'! We had a great time and would love to go back one day. If you are thinking about a holiday in Portugal you will find the owners of this property very helpful in your planning"

"We are from the island of Madeira & we were looking for a different sort of holiday on the "mainland" (Portugal) Casa Bedrock was the perfect choice for us. The kids had fun picking figs each day off the tree and spent hours exploring the garden, making strongholds and dens. The house itself was wonderfully cool light and spacious. We loved looking out at the views from the balcony. Nearby we walked to the old windmills looked at the hundreds of olive trees. Had fun at the Pombal water park nearby and at the river beaches a 20 minute drive away. We were well placed for culture too, and had a good outing to the roman ruins at Conimbriga. We even found time to visit a couple of castles too.The bbq was fab and used daily! Really liked the fact we got a great guidebook sent to us by Dave before our holiday started giving lots of useful information about the area and the walks that could be done. Info that you can't get/find in your standard guide book"

"After visiting friends in the Algarve we decided to tag an extra week onto our holiday to break the journey back home to France. Well it became more that just a stopover as we fell in love with the area and Casa Bedrock"

"Casa Bedrock will provide the perfect location for those wishing to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, set in a peaceful little village in the tranquil Portuguese countryside. The directions to the property provided by the owner were clear and easy to follow. The guidebook which was provided proved to be invaluable, as it allowed us to discover some hidden gems. The property was as described, clean, modern and well maintained, with the outdoor area and balcony perfect for enjoying a glass of wine whilst watching the sun go down. The owner was prompt to reply to all communications and extremely helpful.
We have visited this region several times, and by far this is the best property we have stayed in and would recommend it to anyone"

"This house was the first of a two centre holiday, the first being a new ultra modern house on the coast, so we were able to compare the two!! Also our children aged 13 and 16 are the harshest critics! We all agreed as a family that we not only preferred this pretty rural area, but that we really enjoyed the house and grounds which had character.
The huge plus of this house was "The Book" written by the owners which gave advice on where to eat , places to visit, river beaches and walks to go on from the house and further afield. We have never been anywhere where we have been given such useful information and in such depth. There is absolutely no way we could have found out even a fraction of the advice given. This was a massive bonus to our holiday"

Hi Dave & Corinne
"Had a wonderful holiday in Casa Bedrock, enjoyed by all. The girls relaxed reading & sunbathing. We swam at river beaches, went sightseeing & just enjoyed the weather. Guidebook is brilliant & meant we could go straight to the beauty spots & didn't waste time finding our feet. It also gave us confidence to go walking. Thanks for all the effort you put into it. Recommended restaurants were great & eating out so cheap. My other observation is the extreme cleanliness of the villa. Congratulations!

"We loved it! Normally we'd spend very little time in the villa but this was different. The kids even asked to spend a leisurely day to go off exploring & sunbathe in the garden. Home from home" Humphreys family. UK
