The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

Central Portugal is the place where you can get a little of everything; from high mountains sceneries to fantastic white sandy beaches. The green is a constant presence. You can see green everywhere; you can see it in the mountains, often contrasting with beautiful streams and waterfalls; you can see it in the plains where every day sheep, goats and donkeys walk around free in nature; you can even see it near the beaches, in the vast forest planted hundreds of years ago by a Portuguese king.

The water from the rivers, streams, lakes, dams and fantastic waterfalls, together with the fresh green of forests and grass, make this area unique; so unique that if you come from Algarve or Alentejo in the dry south, and keep going north, when you reach central Portugal you might have a shock and think you're in a different country!

But central Portugal is not only made of green sceneries, beautiful streams, fantastic beaches and sunny landscapes. Central Portugal is made of people too. Central Portugal is mainly rural, and in these areas people are very friendly and like to welcome and receive people, especially foreign. In these areas the gastronomy is very rich, and I'm sure you will love some typical meals and desserts.

If you travel East, central Portugal will turn even more rural and more mountainous. This is where you can find Serra da Estrela, the highest Portuguese mountain. If you go west, you will find many cities, for example Coimbra. Coimbra is the 3rd Portuguese city and the main one in central Portugal. Coimbra is known for the rich cultural patrimony. It's full of museums, century buildings, old churches and monasteries and the most important thing in Coimbra - The University. The oldest university in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe is here, in Coimbra. With 20.000 students from all over the world, It is a place to visit. If you like big student parties don't lose 'Queima das Fitas' in May.

But if you travel west, you will find one of the best things in Portugal - the sea and the miles of white sandy beaches, clean skies, pleasant sun and believe it or not, desert roads!

In summer you can go to Silver Coast beaches and enjoy many hours of sun and hot temperatures (sometimes it reaches upper 30ºC on seaside and around 40ºC inland), with a fresh breeze coming from the sea. But, if you do not wish to travel that further you can always do a touristy trip around central Portugal. Stay alert to touristy signs (the brown ones), they always lead into fantastic landscapes or historical places where you often find medieval castles, roman ruins, local views, river beaches and other great things that should be visited. You can, for instance, visit Lousã castle, where you will also find a beautiful natural swimming pool in a fresh stream, or you can visit Castelo de Almourol (south from Tomar) build on a rocky island in the middle of Tejo river (biggest river crossing Portugal), and many other castles in Tomar (world heritage), Ourém, Pombal, Penela, Montemor-o-Velho…the list goes on and on.

The flora in central Portugal is very rich and it's a mix of Mediterranean trees with trees from other parts of the world. You can easily find vast plains covered with olives &vineyards and forests of oak, pine, chestnut, eucalyptus, etc. Near houses you normally find a huge range of fruit trees of all kind, yes including oranges! The weather in Portugal normally behaves as follow: Very hot in summer (30ºC to 40ºC) with little or no rain, usually no wind, and clean sky. In winter the temperature is usually around 10ºC to 20ºC during the day, but at night it can turn cold with occasional frost (no snow, except for high mountains like 'Estrela'). There is some rain in winter, but it's also frequent to have many sunny days, with temperatures much lower than summer. Autumn is medium hot, same as spring, and the rainy season usually takes place during this time but rarely for a long consecutive period.

These are just a few highlights of central Portugal, but it is much more than this. If you don't believe come and see for your own eyes. Central Portugal is forest, mountain, sea, beaches, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, sun, history, culture... in one sentence, central Portugal is where you want to be on your next holidays!

Ansiao

Ansião is an area full of history, culture, patrimony, beautiful landscapes and rich gastronomy. Once an area full of windmills of which very few remain intact; luckily some of them are really close here in our village of Outeiro. An area full of ancient Sheppard's tracks great for walking and cycling, and ancient road lines such as roman roads from Coimbra to Tomar and the very ancient pilgrim's route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. There are many villages with old churches, castles and even Roman Ruins. The biggest roman ruins site in the whole Peninsula is only 15 minutes away in Conimbriga, but you don't need to travel that far because there are more interesting roman ruins in Santiago da Guarda (3km) and Rabaçal (5km). An area full of cliffs and unspoilt canyons; if you are into climbing then don't miss 'Poios valley', 'Sra. Da Estrela' or 'Buracas valley'. Even if you're not into sports you can still visit those places for the views and beautiful landscape. If you love castles, then you will love our region; there are many from small ruins to huge intact ones. Don't miss castle of Penela, Pombal, Germanelo and a bit further Montemor-o-Velho. Local views are great! In some places you can see as far as the sea (45kms) or the high mountains inland. Don't forget to visit Coimbra, Leiria and Tomar as well if you need a bit more than countryside.

But if all this touring makes you hungry then you came to the right place! Gastronomy is very important for the Portuguese and especially in these rural areas. With many traditional meals, soups and desserts I'm sure you will love some or all of them; together with a good local wine and a slice of Rabaçal cheese (famous local cheese). As said before food is really important for the Portuguese so you will easily find many restaurants nearby. If you prefer to eat at home then you can still try some of the local products that you can buy in local shops or at weekly markets. Ever wondered how bread was done in the old days? Well, in Ansião you can learn by doing the 'Ciclo do Pão'; you will be taken in a tour to see how flower was made in traditional windmills, then how bread was done and yes, at the end you can taste and keep your own bread!

As a town Ansiao has made a huge effort to renovate the old centre and also the riverside into large gardens, so if you have time it's worth visiting. Much more can be told about the area but you need to discover and experience yourself, and you can only do that if you are here so don't wait much longer and book your holiday; we will be waiting for you!

"Portugal at it's best"

The holiday accommodation is a recently renovated building with all modern appliances. It is built on land owned by the owners but they have ensured that your stay is as private as possible. The pool is the best part. Not the biggest but the view is stunning. It looks southwards over the olive groves and is as good as it gets.
The Carocol restaurant is nearby and the food is fantastic.
If you are looking for a peaceful, safe and rural holiday that is in easy driving distance of the areas beaches, this is the place.

Thank you very much for your review. We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
