The Grand Port region
Grand Port is the cradle of Mauritian history, as this is where people first settled on the uninhabited island called Mauritius.
The magnificent bay of Mahébourg has a number of sites which might have been settled, but the Dutch chose the high ground at Vieux Grand Port to build their fort. In the lagoon immediately below, they built a jetty from stones, which can still be seen to this day.
The Mauritius National Heritage Trust Fund is studying the archeological sites of the area.
Mahébourg our local town is the capital of the Grand Port District. The well-planned wide streets in the old section of Mahébourg still bear testimony to this Dutch and French colonial past. After the French chose Port Louis as the main port Mahébourg declined into a sleepy coastal town. The past is still preserved today in the Historical Naval Museum which also recounts the epic naval battles of the past between the French and British Navies. The Dutch historical museum in Grand Port recounts the early Dutch settlement of the island.
Nowadays, Mahébourg is a bustling centre of local trade. The new waterfront complex promises some memorable walks along the sea-side. It even has a casino, a mark of a developing tourism industry. There is a growing number of small bars and restaurants in the town itself and the surrounding districts which cater for local and foreign visitors.
The average temperature during the summer months (October to May) is approcimately 28°C, with a water temperature of 24°C. The sub-topical winter months (June to September) are as beautiful as summer in Europe.
Anse Jonchee area
Hidden in the valley at Anse Jonchée near Mahebourg on the south-Eastern side of the island is the tranquil location of your Holiday Bungalow.
On the nearby forest-clad montain slopes at an altitude of 300 to 500 metres live stags and deer, monkeys and wild boars among a luxurious vegetarian of ebony, eucalyptus, ravenals, palm trees and wild orchids. Rare species of birds such as the Kestrel can be seen in the woods.
The local lagoon 200 metres from our doorstep is the main attraction of this region. In Anse Jonchee, the mountains come down steeply into the sea.
The view of the lagoon on one side and the vegetation-rich mountains on the other makes this region without any doubt, the richest coastal scenery of Mauritius. Our coastal road is one of the few in Mauritius that has few walls and buildings to obstruct the view of the awe inspiring Indian Ocean.
If you are looking for an holiday combining Nature activities and the Beach look no further. The East coast of Mauritius is in fact the place for real "sea, sand and sun" holidays. The wonderful public beaches and of course the famous "ile aux Cerfs" are all near by and can be reached in a 20 minutes drive.
