The Central Ireland / County Roscommon region
Roscommon offers an enchanting glimpse of hidden treasure to those who seek. Brimful of history and heritage, Roscommon boasts many archaeological structures including Rathcroghan, ancient home of the High Kings. From more recent times, great houses and castles are to be found. Here, a more tranquil and serene beauty reigns, framed by mountain, moor land and lake. Nature and wildlife flourish in undisturbed habitat. The warmth of the people is tangible, part of the essence of the county.
Anrathbeg area
The town of Lanesborough is at the head of Lough Ree (Loch Ribh-the Looped Lake), the second largest of the Shannon lakes. It is approx. 27 km long, with twenty seven islands, many of them with ecclesiastical ruins.
The excellent fishing and boating attract many visitors to Lanesborough and there is a relaxing riverside walk that will refresh the mind and stretch the limbs. Sights to see include the heritage village of Ardagh, which was built in the 1860s to a Swiss design, and the recently discovered Old Bog Road, an Iron Age trackway of large oak planks in a bog at Corlea, plus don't miss the mining experience at Arigna.
There is fishing, golf and sailing on the doorstep but if a more relaxing outing is required visit Strokestown Park House & Gardens, Elphin Windmill where guided tours are available or King House. The Shannon River can be explored on a cruiser or take the kids to Donegal Adventure Centre.
How to get there
Head out of Lanesborough on the Roscommon road for about 2 miles and you will see the stone cottage on the left, with a blue front door.
Turn left at the junction to access rear entrance.
