Farmhouse / 4 bedrooms / sleeps 8
Manna is a delightful 19th Century Farmhouse which has been lovingly restored with a clever blend of old and new to retain many of its original features. This is one of Syros' hidden treasures with original tiled floors, wooden bread ovens and thick stone walls to keep the house cool in summer.
Reached by a small country lane and nestling amongst 20 acres of extensive gardens and woodlands, with glorious views across the surrounding hills, this is the perfect place to experience the authentic and forgotten Greece. The private, secluded plunge pool is surrounded by pine, olive and cypress trees and is ideal for a quick dip. Woodland paths lead you through the gardens which are a riot of colour in the spring when they are carpeted with wild flowers. Pick your own oregano, sage and thyme to flavour the BBQ!
The well equipped kitchen/diner still has the original decorative tiles and one of the cosy sitting rooms has a large wood burning stove in case of chilly evenings. The use of colour, soft furnishings, locally crafted floor coverings and textiles make this a unique place to stay. All the bedrooms have been tastefully decorated by the artist owner, with lovely antique furniture and comfortable beds. Each bedroom has its own bathroom (2 of which are en-suite) and views across the gardens.
There are two shaded outside verandas - one of which has a bamboo roof and is perfect for al-fresco dining around the large wooden table. The second pergola has comfortable furniture and is ideal for having a snooze or relaxing with a book. Both of these seating areas give spectacular views across the gardens.
The gardener comes in during the week to water the plants and clean the pool - he speaks perfect English and is a mine of information!.

The Cyclades region
The Cyclades is a group of islands in the Southeast of mainland Greece scatttered across the dazzling Aegean Sea. They are what most people assume all Greek islands are like - rugged outcrops of primaeval rocks lapped by the bluest of seas and topped by a cluster of white. 24 of the islands are inhabited and each one has its Chora (capital) overlooking its port. There is a huge difference between each one, making the group perfect for island hopping. The main feature of the islands are the golden beaches, pine forests, olive groves, herb-strewn mountains and terraced valleys which make them a tempting mix and an appealing site for both visitors and people living there.
Syros is unlike many of the better known islands. It is as yet unspoiled by tourism and has a large natural harbour in the local town of Ermoupolis (only 10 minutes away), which was once the main port of Greece and is lined with many impressive neo-classical buildings. The old town has a maze of tiny traffic free streets which are great fun to explore and to discover the city's charm. The great number of beautiful beaches will delight the sea and sand lovers - the nearest being only 10 mins away.
There are lots of local delicacies on Syros - Halva pie (a pie made of thyme honey and roasted almonds), loukoúmi (a delight made of water, starch and sugar), “loosa” ham, fennel sausages and the San Mihalis spicy cheese.
The nearest taverna is under 10 mins by car and the nearest large supermarket only 5 minutes away. A "must" is the closeby Ano Syros, a nice village almost attached to Ermoupolis. From the square of Ano Syros, you have a stunning view of Ermoupolis and the busy port. This is the coffee spot with the best vista on the island!
In the afternoon, go for a swim in Kini, a sandy beach about 10 km east of Ermoupolis. Lovely tavernas and cafeterias can be found by the beach and many tourist facilities. Although this an organised beach, it still remains unspoilt by tourism.
To the south of the island are two lovely fishing villages - Finikas and Poseidonia - both of which have lovely beaches and tavernas offering fresh fish and traditional dishes.
