The Newry and Mourne region
Royal County Down is one of the oldest and most renowned golf clubs in Ireland with traditions dating back for more than one hundred years. In 2007 the Walker Cup matches were held here. Situated in Newcastle, where in the immortal words of Percy French, 'The Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea', Royal County Down is not only a fine test of golf but has accompanying scenery that is spellbinding.
Alongside the Championship Links, Royal County Down has a second course, The Annesley Links. Laid out beneath the same massive, almost menacing backdrop, the Annesley Links is nowhere near as intimidating or as formidable a challenge as the Championship Links, but then it was never intended to be. It is a course for everyone. (Extracts from the official Royal County Down Golf Course website). For further details tel: (028) 4372 3314
A short drive away will take you to the town of Castlewellan where you have access to any number of outdoor activities, golf, fishing, mountain climbing, canoeing, abseiling, sailing, mountain biking, tennis etc. Newcastle has a heated outdoor swimming pool during the summer months and lots of family activities during the holiday season.
The Marine Park offers a unique combination of facilities to enable the visitor to have an unforgettable day out whatever the weather. Besides being able to launch a boat at all states of the tide, the visitor may also follow the Marine Park Trail, have a cuppa in the cafe (during summer months), picnic overlooking the harbour whilst keeping an eye on the children at play .
The village of Annalong can be easily reached over a footbridge, and one can also enjoy a stroll along the Mourne Coastal Path. Mourne country are exciting destinations in their own right.
