Chateau de Charras
House | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
This family house is set within the 13 acre grounds of the 18th century Chateau de Charras. The house itself originally formed part of the Chateau's wine store and has recently been sympathetically renovated with many original features retained - ie exposed stonework including a large stone fireplace and wooden beams. There is also a courtyard at the back of the house with furniture for outside dining. The extensive grounds are very pleasant and relaxing to walk through with stone staircases , walls and balustrades recalling a much different lifestyle from long ago. There are panoramic views across the countryside from the hill top position of the Chateau and guests can enjoy the shared use of the 15m x 6m heated swimming pool and 2 tennis courts during their stay. The Chateau is in the heart of the village of Charras which has it's own boulangerie , general store with post office and bar / restaurant all within easy walking distance.

"Get off the world for a while in this adorable place......."
What can I say? Absolutely wonderful. I stayed with my husband, two daughters and their husbands and 2 grandchildren 4yo and 7yo. I found myself thinking" I wonder if there's a ....." and there always was. From a garlic press to table tennis bats to logs for the wood burner! Eating round the huge family table, wandering the extensive wooded walks amongst hoards of cowslips on the Chateau estate and beyond, and eating freshly baked pains au chocolat and baguettes from the village bakery and creamy butter from the shop. I can smell them now.Welcomed by Tracy and all the other owners with such genuine warmth that included us in their annual Easter festivities of hunting chocolate eggs and catching raw eggs in a circle! Tennis on the courts, running down the lanes and woodland and drinking coffee in Brantome - what could be more relaxing? This property is set in truly unique surroundings . We will be back. Thanks Tracey.

"What a lovely setting!"
This was our first visit to France as a family of 6 - us two 'oldies' plus our daughter and son-in-law and their children aged 8 and 12. On arrival, we were met by the owner, Tracey who gave us a comprehensive explanation of the facilities in the property together with a guided tour of the grounds. The children's eyes certainly lit up at the sight of the swimming pool and they both spent many hours in it during the stay. She certainly gave the impression that she wanted us to enjoy our stay in what had previously been her home and we later discovered that she'd thoughtfully left bread, milk and a bottle of wine for us. What better welcome than that? Tracey had also compiled a portfolio of things to see and do which we found very helpful.
Although situated in a small quiet village, it by no means lacks facilities. These include a convenience store and a bakers for daily provisions, a bar and a bouledrome for relaxation and several other outlets such as a hairdresser's, all within 150m or so.
The property was ideally suited to our needs - a kitchen diner with a large table, an adequate lounge, two double bedrooms and a twin room in the roof area for the children. The property also offered a small courtyard garden with a BBQ, but with such extensive and spacious grounds there was little need for daytime use of it.
As we were staying during the Olympics, we much appreciated the British satellite TV reception. Combined with the free broadband, this meant we were able to keep in touch with all that was happening.
Transport was essential for larger shopping trips and to take in the lovely countryside. We also drove to several nearby towns and villages - our favorite being Brantome, at which Tracey has a jewelry stall in the market on a Friday morning. We also took a trip slightly further afield to Cognac and included a visit to one of the distilleries whilst there.
All in all we had a great time and would certainly recommend this property to anyone looking for a countryside vacation.

"Lovely House and Setting, we will be back next year!"
We stayed for one week, Tracey was very helpful and settled us in quickly to a well furnished and very clean house. We loved the local area visiting caves, Brantome and canoeing but also lots to do at the Chateau including tennis and a lovely pool. We have never returned to a previous location in France but will be back to Charras in 2013 all being well.

"Relaxation in the French Countryside..."
This was my first time to France, so we hit both Paris and then Charras so that we could travel to Angouleme for the BD festival. As odd as it might sound, I found myself enjoying Charras more that Paris. This Chateau is FANTASTIC. My only regret was that we were there when the pool wasn't open. Everyone is very friendly, and the grounds are fantastic. I hope I can visit again!
