The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Poitou Charentes region is one of France's most popular holiday destinations and is believed to be the second sunniest French region after Provence. Like its neighbour the Dordogne, the Poitou Charentes is notable for glorious countryside. The capital of Charente is the walled city of Angoulême, a lively place to visit with many amenities and an annual World Music Festival. The immediate area offers the wooded valleys of several large rivers including the Charente, and the famous vineyards producing Cognac brandy. Further afield, but within reasonable driving distance are the coastal resorts of the Ile d'Oleron and La Rochelle. The theme park at Poitiers Futuroscope is a major attraction and the Leisure Lake at Saint Estèphe a must-see!
The Angouleme / Vouzan area
The nearby town of Angoulême offers a fantastic range of fashion and shoe shops, well-stocked supermarkets, food markets, lots of excellent restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as places of interest including its most famous museum which celebrates cartoon characters from Asterix to Peanuts. The museum, in a former brewery, with contemporary high rise and glass additions, houses some 4,000 original drawings and a family-friendly library with English editions. Closer to 'home' in Sers, the next village to Vouzan, there is a bakery, small grocery shop and welcoming bar.
