Home description
Set in over an acre, with lovely views of the surrounding countryside, 'La Chataigneraie' is a large renovated stone farmhouse providing holiday accommodation of the highest standard. The house combines the charms of rustic traditional French living, with beams, stone fireplaces, oak flooring and exposed brickwork along with modern day comforts.We fell in love with it from the moment we saw it- photos do not do it justice! The fabulous grounds laid mainly to lawn, with plenty of fruit trees provide a safe environment for children tand pets to play. The large swimming pool enjoys stunning views across open countryside. The village is set in rolling countryside surrounded by sunflower fields and vineyards and plenty of pretty walks.The house is ideal for families or couples alike, looking for relaxation and entertainment, with plenty in the surrounding area to see and do during your stay.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente region has a micro-climate that makes it the second sunniest region in France. The countryside is beautiful: gentle rolling hills, vineyards and sunflower fields. The Charente is the main region for producing Cognac and there are many local producers and suppliers, along with abundant vineyards and vineyards which not only produce excellent wines ut also the local tipple Pinot. There are plenty of vinyards to visit or take an interesting tour of one of the Cognac Estates. The charming riverside town of Cognac (45 minutes drive) with lovely shops,bars and restaurants has a pretty central square with fountains. The river tour of the brandy distilleries is well worth trying. There are a number of houses to visit including Hennessy and Martells. which have organised tours. For golf enthusiasts, there is a stunning18 hole golfcourse east of the city( about 40 minutes from house).Further on the historic Saintes with its stunning Roman ampitheatre, is well worth a visit. St Emillion, the beautiful medieval hill top village is full of shops selling the local claret and certainly worth a visit, and only a 45 minutes drive through pretty ancient vineyards which you can visit by small train and sample the wine. Just 40 minutes away is one of the prettiest villages in France Aubeterrre sur Dronne with its famous underground church where concerts and performances are held during the summer months. Just a short drive will take you to the river Dronne with its safe riverside beaches and leisure facilities, get dropped off with a canoe, enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant and leisurely paddle your way back. You are welcome at the local Anglo French golf club a further 5 minutes drive away, where there are tennis courts and a pool and creche here. Go north up the N10 for an hour to Futuroscope theme park should you want a special day out for the family. The beautiful sandy beaches at Royan arejust over an hour's drive as is the old town of La Rochelle with its historic harbour and wonderful seafood restaurants.Why not drive into the neighbouring Dordogne and see the amazing Lascaux caves or the famous medieval town of Sarlat? Riberac the largest market town in the Perigord is an hour and 20 minutes away.
Angouleme area
This area of France enjoys a wonderful climate with long summers starting early lasting well into October. The log burning stove and open fire make the farmhouse a warm and cosy place to stay in the winter. We are Ideally situated for all the activites and sight seeing in the Charente/ Dordogne region.You can swim at one of the many beachside lakes, many have bars, restaurants, beach volley, and children's playground activities, There are numerous beautiful old towns and villages to visit which really come alive on market days. Barbezieux, just 10 minutes' drive away, has an imposing chateux at its centre with restaurants and shops, a bank, post office, chemist and a choice of three excellent supermarket for all your holiday supplies. There are tennis courts here and, a few miles away, at Jarnac, golf, bike and boat hire and many water sports including white water rafting. Chalais, with its Chateau, cloisters and church, has a large Monday morning market and is just a 20 minutes drive away. The Chateau in Chalais has midnight tours every Wednesday and has a great restaurant but you must book, it gets very busy. A 30 minute drive takes you to the capital of the Charente-the city of Angouleme, with the commanding Cathedral de St-Pierre. It has a wonderful food market and excellent restaurants and night life etc. The fortified old town is steeped in history and you can still walk around the ramparts, although this is not advised during the vintage car rally which takes place each September. Also known as the capital of "bande dessinée" or cartoon strip ,its festival in January attracts visitors from all over the world. There is also an indoor pool complex and ice scating rink. At the river beach you can enjoy horse riding, canoeing, go-carting, and fishing. For golf lovers, there is an impressive 18 hole municipal course south of the city.
How to get there
By car: 7 hours from Calais. The N10 motorway giving excellent access from Northern France is just a few minutes from the house.
The TGV station at Angouleme is only 35 minutes away and Chalais 30 minutes away. Eurostar can be taken directly to Poitiers, with a simple platform change at Lille

Further details indoors: The house has a wealth of charm and character and is exceedingly spacious with plenty of room for an additional bed or cot. It could easily accommodate two families. We have additional adjacent accommodation available for larger parties if required.Upstairs there are three double bedrooms, a large family room with 2 single beds and sofa bed plus en-suite shower room and a huge master bedroom with 6 foot bed and en- suite bathroom. There is an additional shower room on the first floor and a w.c. with hand basin on the ground floor.
The sitting room has exposed brickwork, oak flooring and stone fireplace with woodburning stove has a TV with satellite. There is a second lounge with TV/video.The large traditional French farmhouse kitchen has a stone fireplace with wood burning stove, kitchen table with seating for 8 and an assortment of antique French furniture. There is an electric range with gas burners. a fridge freezer, dishwasher,washing machine. The newly furnished dining room comfortably seats 12-14 people- and offers enough room for large parties to dine comfortably
Opposite the house is our 3 bedroomed gite which can be used for larger parties if necessary.
Further details outdoors: We're right down in the South-West of France where the sun is much higher in the sky all year round. We get lots of sunshine throughout the year and just enough rain to keep it green and pleasant. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards. Summer is warm, with highs in the 30's. Autumn can stay warm in the day but with cooler nights. Even in winter when the sun is out it's possible to sit outside in the middle of the day and enjoy a glass of St Emilion. The property has over an acre of garden, mostly to rough grass and several fruit trees provide dappled shade in the hot summer sun You are welcome to pick the fruit when it is ripe.The gardens are surrounded by fields of maize and sunflowers. A large swimming pool is located in a lovely secluded spot overlooking the countryside.The pool can be illuminated at night, when it can be used on warm evenings for those magical nightime swims. The large south facing terrace is private with sunbeds, umbrellas, chairs and the large stone bar-b-q will cater for the biggest appetites! There is an outside barn/pool room with convenient shower/toilet and fridge to keep the beers chilled. Al-fresco dining can also be had in the beautiful walled courtyard nearer to the house, where vines and creepers create a wonderful relaxed atmosphere.

NB: Prices may be subject to change at the owner's discretion. We can accept payments by sterling or euro cheque but would prefer a bank transfer in euros. We provide sheets, pillowcases and towels free of charge but do ask guests to bring their own pool towels. *Low Season supplement for Electric,Central Heating and Logs for the wood burner in the kitchen and lounge of £100 per week. A deposit of 25% is required to secure booking. Balance to be payable 8 weeks before arrival. A damages deposit of £250 per week is required when final balance is paid (to be refunded within two weeks of your departure subject to a satisfactory property inspection) Whilst general wear and tear and minor breakages are considered acceptable, this deposit will be used as compensation for damage to furniture,electrical equipment or theft.
