The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The Charente region has a micro-climate that makes it the second sunniest region in France. The countryside is beautiful: gentle rolling hills, vineyards and sunflower fields. The Charente is the main region for producing Cognac and there are many local producers and suppliers, along with abundant vineyards and vineyards which not only produce excellent wines ut also the local tipple Pinot. There are plenty of vinyards to visit or take an interesting tour of one of the Cognac Estates. The charming riverside town of Cognac (45 minutes drive) with lovely shops, bars and restaurants has a pretty central square with fountains. The river tour of the brandy distilleries is well worth trying. There are a number of houses to visit including Hennessy and Martells. which have organised tours. For golf enthusiasts, there is a stunning18 hole golfcourse east of the city( about 40 minutes from house).Further on the historic Saintes with its stunning Roman ampitheatre, is well worth a visit. St Emillion, the beautiful medieval hill top village is full of shops selling the local claret and certainly worth a visit, and only a 45 minutes drive through pretty ancient vineyards which you can visit by small train and sample the wine.
Just 40 minutes away is one of the prettiest villages in France Aubeterrre sur Dronne with its famous underground church where concerts and performances are held during the summer months. Just a short drive will take you to the river Dronne with its safe riverside beaches and leisure facilities, get dropped off with a canoe, enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant and leisurely paddle your way back. You are welcome at the local Anglo French golf club a further 5 minutes drive away, where there are tennis courts and a pool and creche here. Go north up the N10 for an hour to Futuroscope theme park should you want a special day out for the family. The beautiful sandy beaches at Royan arejust over an hour's drive as is the old town of La Rochelle with its historic harbour and wonderful seafood restaurants. Why not drive into the neighbouring Dordogne and see the amazing Lascaux caves or the famous medieval town of Sarlat? Riberac the largest market town in the Perigord is an hour and 20 minutes away.

Further details outdoors:
We're right down in the South-West of France where the sun is much higher in the sky all year round. We get lots of sunshine throughout the year and just enough rain to keep it green and pleasant. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards. Summer is warm, with highs in the 30's. Autumn can stay warm in the day but with cooler nights. Even in winter when the sun is out it's possible to sit outside in the middle of the day and enjoy a glass of St Emilion.
The property has over an acre of garden, mostly to rough grass and several fruit trees provide dappled shade in the hot summer sun You are welcome to pick the fruit when it is ripe. The gardens are surrounded by fields of maize and sunflowers. A large swimming pool is located in a lovely secluded spot overlooking the countryside. The pool can be illuminated at night, when it can be used on warm evenings for those magical nightime swims. The large south facing terrace is private with sunbeds, umbrellas, chairs and the large stone bar-b-q will cater for the biggest appetites! There is an outside barn/pool room with convenient shower/toilet and fridge to keep the beers chilled. Al-fresco dining can also be had in the beautiful walled courtyard nearer to the house, where vines and creepers create a wonderful relaxed atmosphere.
