Walnut Tree Cottage is on the edge of a small hamlet surrounded by beautiful countryside. The cottage has so much charm we fell in love straight away and hope you will too. The house is spacious, comfortably furnished and sleeps up to five in two bedrooms. The newly decorated sitting room retains many original features such as the traditional Charentaise fireplace, the beams and the old oak floor. The old 'sejour' has a kitchen/diner with comfortable lounge seating around the wood burning stove. The en suite master bedroom has a kingsized bed whilst the other has twin beds with plenty of space for a foldaway bed. A shower room is adjacent. We also have a cot. Each bedroom has a mirror and a hairdryer. There 3 steps down to the bedrooms which separates them from the living area but does make access for wheelchair users or the infirm difficult. Outside, to the rear, there is a new and, we think, beautiful terrace, perfect for eating alfresco or simply for enjoying the odd glass of wine or two! Beyond is a lawn with plenty of room for kicking a football, there are also fruit and nut trees which you are able to enjoy in season. The garden is enclosed on three sides, the fourth having a gap for off lane parking. It enjoys both sun and shade. The cottage is ideal for a memorable family holiday or for couples wanting a romantic break. Enjoy!

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

Walnut Tree Cottage provides the best of all worlds. The Charente is documented as the second sunniest region in France so you could just relax in the garden or walk in the surrounding countryside. The nearest shop/restaurant is an easy two minutes away, The owners are English speaking and very friendly and welcoming. There are a number of market towns within 15 mins drive each with its own particular character and style. You could visit a market a day if you wanted to. There are many restaurants close by to suit all pockets and tastes. Near by are a number of clean swimming lakes with beaches and places to eat. The sea is less than an hour away. There is a large inside water park for the odd inclement day and any number of sporting activities if that is your thing.

Angouleme / Bessac area

Within easy reach by car are many beautiful and interesting towns. Angouleme (30 mins) is a fortified old town steeped in history where you can still walk around the ramparts, although this is not advised during the vintage car rally which takes place each September. The Charente is the main region for producing Cognac and there are many local producers and suppliers, along with abundant vineyards and vineyards which not only produce excellent wines ut also the local tipple Pinot. The town of Cognac is 40 mins away whilst others include Brantome and St Emilion. Aubeterre sur Dronne (20 mins) is officially one of the prettiest villages in France. It has a fascinating monolithe church which holds concerts during the summer months. Why not drive into the neighbouring Dordogne and see amazing caves, go north to Futuroscope or visit the interactive prehistoric centre near Cognac. Chateaux and vineyards are in plentiful supply. The possibilities are truely endless, we are in our fifth year and still have so much yet to see.

How to get there

The cottage is easy to reach by air or ferry. Angouleme airport is around 30 minutes away, Bordeaux and Bergerac are around the hour and a half mark with Limoges around 2 hours. Calais is approx 8 hours and St Malo five. The nearest train stations are Montmoreau and Chalais with links to Paris via Angouleme. Car Hire is available at each port, airport and train station.

The cottage is ideally located for the Angouleme vintage car rally which takes place each September.

Further details indoors:
Due to the character of the cottage, along with it being centuries old, the floor in the hallway is uneven. Please be aware of this when making a booking. There is a door between the living and sleeping areas, at the steps, for further privacy and safety.

Further details outdoors:
It is hoped to have a 7.5m X 3.6m above ground pool installed for next season however this cannot be guaranteed because of the vageries of the winter/spring weather. Our prices which reflect the cottage without a pool will not be increased for those booking prior to installation. Please ask for more details if you wish to.

There are steps upto the front entrance which may make access difficult for the elderly or infirm.
