About the home

If you are looking for a perfect setting for your family reunion, special celebration or just an opportunity to spend some time with friends, look no further ….. This traditional Charentaise manor house, which dates back to around 1840, is situated in the little hamlet of Maison Neuve, surrounded by forests, just 20 minutes away from the historic city of Angoulême. The six double rooms, all en suite, are in a separate building adjacent to the main house and each opens onto the enclosed garden with its sunny terrace. We should point out that the rooms are former hotel rooms and may not be suitable for very young children because of lack of supervision and direct access to the garden. The lounge and dining room are on the ground floor of the main house, as is the large professional and fully-equipped kitchen, which is available for our guests to use.
There is a large garden to the rear of the house, with its own bamboo 'forest'. Plans are now under way for the installation of a private pool - it will be ready in the spring of 2013, exact completion date to be confirmed ....
You will find a bakery a few minutes' drive away in the nearby village of Sers, which also has a pharmacy, a small shop, a bar/tabac and a post office. A little further away in the other direction is the village of Charras, with another excellent bakery. For supermarket shopping, head to the outskirts of Angoulême, where you will find a large Carrefour, or to the old town of Villebois Lavalette for the ultra-modern Super-U.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region

The location of L’Orée des Bois makes it an ideal base for touring and exploring the charms of the Charente. Visit Angoulême, with its wall paintings, cultural attractions, shops, traditional markets, restaurants and bars and home to the internationally renowned Bande Dessinée and Ramparts Car Rally. The area around the town of Cognac, just on the other side of Angoulême, is home to the famous cognac houses, any of which is well worth a visit. Or you could try your hand at chocolate making (and eat what you make!) with a group lesson at the local chocolate factory. Or adopt the leisurely pace of the region and take a boat trip on the Charente river. There are numerous chateaux in the area and many picturesque towns and villages to explore. For example, the nearby town of Villebois Lavalette has a chateau dating back to Roman times and a wooden covered market that dates back to the 16th century, where traditional markets are held every Saturday; further away to the south is one of the most beautiful villages in France, Aubeterre sur Dronne, with its spectacular underground monolithic church.

The Angouleme / Vouzan area

For our more active guests, there are four 18-hole golf courses within easy reach, as well as horse-riding, canoeing and swimming. The coast is less than two hours away by car. Nearer to home is the Nautilus water park in Angoulême, with its lakeside beach, pools and slides – perfect for keeping the children, both young and old, amused. For a fun day out, head for the Vallée des Singes, a large ape and monkey park and one of the top attractions in the Charente. Or Futuroscope, the 3D video theme park, just over an hour's drive away.
If you’re looking for the ultimate in sightseeing or shopping, you can hop on a high-speed train in Angoulême and be in the centre of Paris in less than 2 hours!
