This property is everything it says in the advert. It is an extremely well equipped house and had everything that our family needed for a great holiday - including satellite tv and wi-fi for that one rainy day. Sometimes it's hard to get the right mix in a holiday that suits all ages but this holiday suited both our teenager and younger children. There is so much to do around the area that we only got to sample a small amount of what we had originally planned. In the very beautiful grounds of the chateau there is the heated pool, tennis courts, badmington and table tennis. There are leafy walks through the orchard and we picked sun warmed plums from the trees. There is the old peaceful church on the grounds with beautiful pieces of artwork. In the village there is the boulangerie - be there early for the pain au chocolat! There is a well stocked convenience store and a small bar/pizza place. There is an extensive list, in the house, of very good local restaurants. Our favourite was the local 'Le Petit Restaurant' in Rozet. Outside of Charras there is so much to do. The canoeing in Montbron was so much fun and a lovely way to see the area - bring a change of clothes! There is cycling from Marthon. There is a comic strip museum in Angouleme - also great shopping in Angouleme for those teenage girls. Further afield there is the beautiful Rochefoucauld Chateau, Villebois Lavalette, Cognac, Saintes and the underground church in Aubterre sur Dronne. Aubterre also has lovely craft shops and a delicious ice-cream shop. The more we explored in this area - the more we found to do. We also managed to squeeze in a trip to Paris on the speedy TGV from Angouleme. Futuroscope and Disneyland Paris are also near enough touring options by train. All in all there was something in this holiday for everyone and staying in this house meant we could travel easily and always return to a very comfortable relaxing base. Before we went to France, Neal (the owner) very kindly gave us lots of great tips on car hire, directions and information on the local area. It also helped that were met on the first day by Denise who was most welcoming and helped us when we needed advice. We hope to return someday to discover more of this beautiful part of France. When we do, we will definitely return to this house in the charming Charras. |
