The Tuscany region
Anghiari is a lovely medieval town lying between two river, the Tiber and the Arno. The powerful thirteenth century walls made the town an invincible fortress which constituted an important reference point and kept the Tuscan flag flying during the many historical events that occurred in this delicately balanced border area. On the 29th June 1440 the famous battle of Anghiari, which was subsequently painted by Lonardo da Vinci in Palazzo Vecchio in Florrence, reaffirmed Florentine rule in Tuscany. Anghiari and the surrounding area has seen the lives and work of the greatest men of the Renaissance who brought the seeds of the modern age from the land intra Tevere et Arno to the whole of Europe. The centuries that followed left their various marks on the churches and houses giving the town its own individual character strung along the steep 'ruga' (furrow or wrinkle) that cuts through its centre, making it uniques and unmistakable.
This region is steeped in history with many ancient towns housing famous works of arts. The area is also famous for its traditional cuisine specializing in seasonal foods which are mainly home grown and organic. There is the National Park called Monti Rognosi which caters for walkers, riders and cyclist. There are many wonderful restaurants where the local food and wine can be appreciated.
There are also nearby vineyard where you can take a tour followed by wine tasting.
There are festivals throughout the year one being the Valtiberina Festival of Music. The London Southbank visit every year and provides a full and varied programme. Throughout the week musicians perform in stunning locations in and around Anghiari including the popular 'progrressivo'; a mini concert tour which winds its way through the picturesque backdrops of the ancient town and see all that it has to offer.
There is a weekly market in Anghiari, 2 markets weekly in Sansepolcro and several food fairs throughout the region.
Arezzo also has the famous Antiques Fair every month.

"The perfect Tuscan retreat, peaceful, comfortable, convenient!"
We have just enjoyed a second stay in this delightful Tuscan mill. It's beautifully restored, simple but very comfortable. The position is lovely, in quiet valley but less than 10 minutes from An… More

Our family of four (two young children) stayed at the Mill for a week in August. We loved the place. The house is beautifully decorated - very tasteful and charming. Lovely bedrooms with really comfortable beds and nice bedlinen. Nice spacious and clean bathrooms. The kitchen utensils were as good as new. The private garden is spacious and has a lovely open view over some beautiful landscape. The children loved the tree house. Lulu who owns the house was extremely friendly and gave us some really useful advice about sightseeing and restaurants in the area. She even helped us with some food on a Sunday when we realized the shops were closed. In summary: A wonderful and charming place with a perfect owner.

"This beautiful home is set in stunning tuscan hills - exactly how you have dreamt it"
We stayed in this old Mill. It's like a fairy tale from the glass in the floor so you can see the original mill to the surrounding hills. It's exactly how you imagine Tuscany. The local town is of course medieval with history abounding - we got to eat a medieval banquet on the street as only the italians can do. It's still all untouched.
We hired a car as there was so much to see. Flew to Perugia and was at the Mill within the hour sipping proseco in the open air staring at the cedar trees.
We also took a trip to florence which we did by parking the car and catching the train and we even managed a trip to Rome for the day (though hectic), which was so easy by train and much more like being a local.
I can't even begin to describe the food but it the whole thing was so relaxing.
This is a stunning spot. You wont be disappointed and the owner has made the Mill beautiful with only luxury in mind.
Also because the owner is english/italian she is able to point you to all the places to get the best value from pizzas to horse riding in the tuscan hills, to the little madonna fresco that is hardly known about by anyone but locals. Things like that make it something else.
Planning to go back in the winter (I know! But got to see this landscape in the snow!).
