The Aegean Islands region

The Cyclades (Greek Κυκλάδες) are a Greek island group in the Aegean Sea, south-east of the mainland of Greece; and an administrative prefecture of Greece. They are one of the island groups which constitute the Aegean archipelago. The name refers to the islands around (κυκλάς) the sacred island of Delos.

The name of Andros is referred for the first time in the tragedy of Aischilos -’’Persie’’ (5th Century BC). However, the name predates this and according to mythical tradition, the island owes its name to “Andron” or “Andrea”, a hero with godly descent. Other names (nicknames) from ancient times include: Gavros, Lasia, Nonagria, Hydrousa, and Epagris, all of which made a statement about the island’s rich nature, which has been maintained till this day and gives the island its special characteristics and makes it unique among the other Cycladic islands.

How to get there

Andros can be reached from the port of Rafina with two - five crossing daily, depending on the time of the year. There are also at least three daily ferry boat connections from the islands of Tinos and Myconos. The distance is 36 nautical miles and is covered in either one or two hours depending on the type of vessel. Rafina is situated 30 km from Athens and 10 Km from the Athens international airport. Both are connected by regular bus services to Rafina. Information for more detailed bus schedules from Athens or from the airport to Rafina can obtained from the public bus services
