The Cotswolds region

The Cotswolds gets it's name from the ridge of oolitic limestone to the west of the region whose wolds roll away to the east creating the beautiful Cotswold landscape. There are gently rolling hills as well as steep narrow valleys and spectacular views along the ridge. Most of the region is farmland broken up by the characteristic stone walls and pretty villages with their quiet churches, village greens, charming pubs and well kept gardens.

The region is dotted with fabulous country houses and gardens to visit and the area has been a magnet for artists and craftsmen for centuries, notably the Arts and Crafts Movement and William Morris. Sheep have been an important influence in shaping the prosperity of the Cotswolds as far back as thee Romans and many of the beautiful churches and estates were built on profits generated from the woollen industry.

Hampen is a tiny tranquil hamlet centred around a working farm, tucked away from the hussle and bussle of everyday life. It is nestled in a sheltered valley surrounded by pasture and parkland designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.. The hamlet was featured in the Doomsday Book but there is evidence of habitation and cultivation in the valley back to the iron age with visible lynchetts and burial mounds on the farm. Many of the existing beautiful stone farm buildings and the farmhouse date back to the 18th century. Hampen typifies the Cotswold rural idyll.

"Fabulous tranquility"

This was exactly what we were after for an Easter getaway. A peaceful, beautiful barn in the most wonderful surroundings. Lydia was an exceptional host, and the complimentary hot cross buns and jam were very happily received. I cannot recommend it enough.

Will definitely be back!

"Lovely barn in the countryside close to other villages"

Lydia and Clive were so welcoming and the barn is just lovely. Very comfortable (underfloor heating is amazing!) and well equipped with kitchen utensils and they even left us a little care package of home produced eggs, milk and coffee.

We wanted to visit a friend in nearby Cheltenham so it was easy to drive there as well as out to other villages to go and do some walking in the Cotswolds. The only downside for us was the weather over New Year but will hopefully be back in the summertime to enjoy it all again.

Thanks so much,

"Excellent, splendid barn in Cotswolds"

One arrival, we got a warm welcome from Clive and Lydia.
The top yard barn is located on a quiet farm located in a Cotswold valley.
The view from the barn shows the magnificent garden and the meadow on the hill with cattle & calves. We enjoyed the sight of the small calves with the mother cows. The top yard barn is very well equipped with everything you could need. The barn has been renovated using old materials and is very cosy. Altough the outside temperature was hot (approx. 30 drg. C), it remained inside pleasant. Our teenagers specially liked the table tennis table and small pool table in the other barn. We feld completely at home in the top yard barn !
Our rating: 10/10

"So idyllic that I cried when we had to leave."

It was serendipity that I found Top Yard Barn on TripAdvisor. Lydia and Clive were gracious hosts and felt more like friendly neighbors than owners. The converted barn was light and airy - the pictures just give you a taste of how quaint the place is. Our five year old felt comfortable exploring the gardens and making friends with the chickens from whom we got fresh eggs. Don't hesitate one moment about booking.

"beautiful and peaceful"

We stayed at Top Yard Barn for 6 nights with our children aged 8 and 12 and we all loved it. The barn itself is perfect - light, airy, spacious, well equipped and very comfortable beds. The barn is set in a beautiful valley beside the owners' farmhouse with just a few other houses and one other holiday rental property nearby. It is very private and secluded with very pretty gardens.
It is a working farm and the children enjoyed having the space around them and the exceptionally friendly hens, dogs and horse. They also had access to a barn with a trampoline, table tennis table, pool tables etc.
The owners, Clive and Lydia were very helpful and friendly and made us feel welcome throughout our stay.
This is a perfect location if you want peace and quiet and enjoy the countryside.

"New year break"

We had a lovely time at Top Yard Barn over New Year.
The welcome was friendly and the cottage was warm and excellently furnished.
It was the perfect setting for our short break with lots of local points of interest and fantastic walks.
