The Burgundy / Yonne region

Burgundy is a world renowned brand name, synonymous with fine wines such as Cote-de-Beane, Cote-de-Nuits, Macon, Chablis and many others, available over a wide range of prices, often surprisingly cheap; The food is equally enticing, not just the famous Boeuf Bourguignon and coq-au-vin, but also foie-gras, escargots (snails) and the many game dishes, wild boar and venison, and cheese varieties by the dozen, not to mention local fresh fruit and vegetables, obtainable in delightful markets, or at the many restaurants, all usually at very reasonable prices.
The region is steeped in history, being in the Middle Ages a political powerhouse ruled by the independent Dukes of Burgundy, hence the many castles and fortified towns, as well as graceful abbeys and chateaux, You can drive to Beaune, Autun, Troyes, Auxerre, Dijon and many other historical towns on largely traffic-free roads, as well as dozens of small, picturesque villages set in rolling wooded countryside, untouched by tourists or commercialism, including Noyers-sur-Serein and Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, both so delightful they have been used as film locations.

Ancy-le-Franc / Stigny area

Stigny village is utterly untouched by the ravages of tourism, yet is within a few kilometers of magnificent chateaux such as Ancy-le-Franc and Tanlay, abbeys such as Fontenay and Pontigny, the Basilica of Vezelay (a World Heritage Site), the fortified town of Semur, the wine town/district of Chablis, the delightful Burgundy Canal with its pleasure craft and leafy towpaths ideal for gentle strolling. The local villages have occasional street markets where you might pick up a bargain, and village fetes in the summer months. On a quieter level, you can simply delight in walking the countryside, or driving the deserted country roads. There are numerous fine restaurants, ranging from small and intimate, to grand and prestigious, all at prices that non-locals will find remarkably reasonable.

Guestbook for Sous Moncelot

1. "We have this minute returned from a wonderful holiday at Sous Moncelot and neither of us could recommend it highly enough. I've stayed in quite a lot of gites and self-catering cottages in France and England, and I thought it was amongst the best and charmingly restored....., and it's all so well kitted out,... spacious, but also so comfortable and cosy. .... I know I must sound like a tourist brochure, but we've just had the most blissful time and I want to recommend it to everyone." ELIZABETH DAY, of The Observer, 2008.

2. "H. and I talk of Sous Moncelot often, and so enjoyed our time there. It is such a beautiful part of France and a really lovely house. You are very generous in the way you have set it all up so well, and equipped it with all the basics and more. It makes such a difference, especially if coming from the other side of the world." C. W., of N.S.W., Australia, 2008.
