Riad | 6 bedrooms | sleeps 12
Riad des Palmiers (so-called because there are 3 ancient palm trees in the garden) is situated in the medina, just inside the city walls and overlooking the beach. This luminous house is situated in a quiet residential area and is laid out over 3 floors, each comprising 2 double bedrooms, with either ensuite shower or bathroom and kitchen. In addition, the 1st and ground floors have a salon, whereas the 2nd floor has a private sunbathing terrace. There is a large roof terrace on the top floor, and a sheltered garden with a 10 sq.metre plunge pool (which is very unusual for Essaouira and the only one in the Medina). The garden can be accessed by the ground and 1st floors, but not the 2nd. Daily maid service is provided, and meals can also be prepared by arrangement.
The house is within a couple of minutes' walk of the best restaurants in Essaouira. The souks -open air meat, fish and vegetable markets - are equally proximate, and the Supratours coach station is just outside our nearest medina gate (Bab Marrakech). The beach is less than 200 yards away.

About this location
The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region
Essaouria produces much by way of art, music, and culture. It is known as a town of artists, called by its fans 'an eternal cradle of art'. Not only Moroccans but also foreign artists can be seen at work throughout the city, and their work can be purchased (or even just admired!) in the city's many art galleries. Some of it is spectacular, some of it odd; but there is a great abundance of styles and mediums and the city's artistic heritage is visible everywhere. This sense of artistry is carried over into some of the city's other famed productions, namely thuya wood and textiles, and the artisans' workshops lining the ramparts could rival any museum for visual spectacle. The city's massively popular Gnaoua festival (which happens annually in June) showcases the Berber music of the region, but even away from the festival the city reverberates with sound.
Architecturally, Essaouira is the most developed of Morocco's cities on the Atlantic coast. It possesses a classical European 'Grand Place,' beautifully preserved ramparts and naval fortifications, one of the finest remaining fortified ports in the world, and numerous monuments of historical interest. The medina itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognised as â??an outstanding and well preserved example of a late 18th century European fortified seaport town translated to a North African context. This melting pot of influences has literally shaped the city's fabric, and continues to inspire its atmosphere, architecture, artwork, cooking - and even the citizens themselves, most of whom are multilingual, welcoming, and fiercely proud of the city's multicultural heritage.
Riad des Palmiers offers flexible accommodation spread over three floors, each with galleried landing, en suite bedrooms, and independent living/kitchenette, to suit groups or families. Unique for a house in the Medina (the old town), the courtyard wall abuts the Medina walls and its pool is fed from the villa's private well.
From the terrace you can enjoy wonderful views over the colourful daily market, selling local produce and the sea with the Island of Mogador in the distance. Trips to this island can be organised by hiring one of the many privately owned fishing boats in the port. A stroll at sunset along the ramparts of this UNESCO World Heritage Listed Site is strongly recommended to enjoy spectacular views of the town, its mosque and souks.Within 4 minutes from this villa Essaouira beach is probably one of the most beautiful beaches in all Africa, with miles of superb sand. Camel and horse riding are very popular activities here and so are all water sports, especially those requiring wind and strong currents. In fact, Essaouira prides itself on being the windsurfing capital of Africa.
