Set in a valley with direct views to the river and the local mountains this cabin is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the true Norway. The cabin is situated on a flat rock plateau on the edge of the heather clad pine forest. A short 50 metres walk takes you down to the crystal clear waters of the river. Where you can fish for trout, take a canoe trip or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the Norwegian Countryside.

The South Norway region
Inland Southern Norway is virtually untouched by the human hand. Apart from the timber exporting and hunting and fishing this part of Norway is completely natural.
There is an abundance of lakes rivers and waterfalls set in a pine clad landscape.
The seasons in Norway are more distinct than in the UK. Warm Summers up to 30 degrees and cold snowy Winters are the norm. So the correct clothing to match the season are required.
Every season at Norwegian Wood has its benefits. Spring often is warm with snow still in the mountains. The 17th of May is the National day and offers a great photo opportunity with many of the locals dressing in national costume. Trout fishing.
Summer offers swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lake at the beautiful “Storesand” (Big beach)
Autumn offers the colours of the forest which in itself a great photo opportunity. Plus the abundance of wild berries and mushrooms in the forest.
Winter offers the snow, which usually arrives in mid November an lasts through until Easter. This of course cannot be guaranteed. Many of the locals use snow scooters for their transport during the winter months. You can X-country ski directly from the door, and its approx. 45 (50 kms) minutes drive to the local ski centre, called Gautefall where you will find challenging downhill slopes, snow boarding facilities restaurant and bar and other winter activities.
Amli / Gjorvdal area
Amli (Åmli) is a small town with small supermarket and a few shops. We would recommend going to one of the larger towns such as Arendal to do any major shopping. Or if you fly into Oslo Torp shop at the CO-OP super market at the airport.
We would recommend a trip during winter time to the Ski centres at Gautefal or Vradal. Here you will find the normal ski facilities, such as boot and ski hire.
Norwegian wood cabin is all about a forest experience and we would recommend X-country skiing right from the door the natural forest tracks among the pine trees and local river.
The views to Storefjell (Large Mountain) are amazing at sunrise when the sun changes the colour of the mountain to various shades of purple green and brown. Rising up to about 1000 metres the local glacier carved mountains are not the Alps but have a charm of their own. Locals believe the mountain range is in the shape of a sleeping giant troll.
The cabin is situated on the edge of a pine forest approximately 150 metres from the road. The pine forest is rich in wildlife including Moose (elk), Red Deer, Roe Deer, Red Squirrels, Artic Hares, Badgers and Foxes. There is the occasional wolf in the area, in fact as this is being written August 2007 there is a warning notice about wolves to local sheep farmers. Speaking to the local timber workers there are rumours of a family of bears living in the surrounding mountains. (NO DANGER TO GUESTS) Beavers inhabit the local rivers and evidence of their activity can be seen in the whole area. The bird life also is also in abundance with Black Wood Peckers and many different birds of prey, including golden eagles.
In the right season there is an abundance of berries and mushrooms including blue berries, cranberries and cloud berries (an artic delicacy).
There are many walks from the cabin. You can walk for as long and where you wish because of Norway’s relaxed “Right to Roam Laws”. The Norwegians believe that the countryside is for the people and “trespassing” is almost unheard of so walk where you please, no one will bother you. Ordinance survey maps of the area are supplied in the cabin and we have a number of suggested walks.
If you only take one walk, take the one to Storesand (Big Beach). It is about 15 minutes away and off the beaten track. A fresh water beach, golden natural sand, crystal clear waters and waterfalls overlooked by the mountains. You will probably have the place to yourself as it’s a local beauty spot virtually unknown to tourists.
Photography and painting. Norwegian wood cabin is ideal for a painting or photography holiday. With large verandas, good natural light and idyllic views.
What can be more romantic, a fresh walk in the forest, ither in the snow and enjoying the cosy log fire with a either a glass of wine or hot chocolate. We can organise flowers champagne or any other special orders to be sent to the cabin by special arrangement.
One of the main features of this property is the wonderful and secluded sandy beach with 700 metres of the cabin. This beach has a volley ball netand is ideal for swimming. The river is closer just 20 meters from the cabin.
The area has walks and great fishing possibilities. Trout and perch being the main fish caught. Ski Centres are within reach. Two alpine skiing centres are within a short drive.

Guestbook for Norwegian Wood Cabin

"We had a fabulous time, we had hoped for snow but despite there being none the icy stillness of the beautiful forests surrounding the cabin were quite fantastic. We saw elk but no lynx and loved the beach. The owner shopped for us superbly and decorated the cabin for Xmas, even put a tree up and lit the stove before we arrived. Despite sub zero temperatures outside we were really warm and cosy and the owner was welcoming and looked after us very well. We hope to go back. Thanks for a great time."

"Had a great holiday this August in Gjovdal. Lovely, cosy, well-equipped cabin - great views and great location. Beautiful surroundings - very peaceful and lots to do if you like hiking, walking, cycling, swimming, messing about in boats. Saw moose and an eagle and deer and fish and the kids (3 & 5 years old) had a great time in the water and in the woods. Thanks too to Holiday Norway who were really friendly and helpful and to Ann Elisabeth who took us to the cabin when we arrived. "

"The cabin was warm, well equipped, larger than we expected and in a wonderful location. Our reception was friendly and very helpful.Gauteffal ski centre is well worth the journey, both from scenery, snow and new ski centre points of view. The views and scenery accessible by cross country skiing were stunning.

"Well… what can I say… except our stay at the cabin made it a magical mystical Christmas for the whole family. If you haven’t put Norway on your Christmas list then do so now. The very well appointed log cabin is quiet and secluded. Snow and ice abound yet the accommodation is a warm and welcoming sanctuary with real log fires making it a cosy snug retreat. Set in the eternal Norwegian pine forests the cabin is surrounded by small mountains and an abundance of lakes and rivers many of which are frozen at this time of year. There is plenty of scope for those who like winter sports and Gautfall is only a short drive away if you would like to try your hand at skiing and sledging. The daylight here has many moods, with a persistently low sun and misty mornings every day was atmospheric. Our host could not have been more helpful. He set a Christmas tree in the living room and was most accommodating in every way. Thank you for making our Christmas so memorable. I fell in love with your country and the people could not have been kinder. Ricky, Sheila and Family."

"The property is in excellent condition, fully equipped, lovely fire place and a great veranda to sit on and have meals. The location itself is beautiful and serene. Village of Gjovdal is about 1km away, also small, pretty and quiet. Overall, great place to go for walks (or biking) especially up small mountains, where there are extraordinary views of lakes. Beautiful forests surround, full of berries and mushrooms. Ideal place to bring children as the location is very safe and the cabin very comfortable.
