The Costa Dorada/Tarragona region
The villa is situated in the peaceful, mature residential area of Las Tres Calas, so named because of its three sandy beaches, and situated between an impressive mountain range and a rugged coastline. The nearest village is L'Ametlla de Mar, about 4km away. L'Ametlla is a typical Catalan fishing village with little narrow streets, plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants and a lovely harbour area. The whole region remains largely unspoilt by tourism, and there are no high rise buildings in the vicinity. Barcelona is 1.5 hours away, the Ebro Delta National park is 30 minutes and the Universal Studios Port Aventura Theme Park is also 30 minutes by car or train. There is a small commercial centre within walking distance with a supermarket, bakery, restaurant and a few bars. It is a 5 minute drive or 20 minute walk to the nearest beach. There are several beaches and coves within a 10 minute drive by car.
Although there are plenty of shops, bars and restaurants in L'Ametlla, there is not really much in the way of nightclubs or discos, so if you’re looking for a hectic nightlife this is NOT the area to go to ! You will find a few bars, a restaurant (with children's’ play area), a supermarket and bakery all within walking distance of the villa.
The wonderful city of Barcelona is a must-see. There is a very good train service from L'Ametlla - fares are very good value and the journey takes about one and half hours. The Universal Studios Port Aventura Theme Park (www.portaventura.es) is one of the best in Europe and is 30 minutes away by train or car. There is also a waterpark adjacent to Port Aventura. The Ebro Delta National Park is world famous for its bird life and its seafood dishes. Salou is lively tourist resort, with a good selection of pubs and restaurants. If you venture inland you will discover beautiful mountain scenary and remote villages. Visit the caves at Benifalet, and medieval castles at Miravet and Penisacola. The next village down the coast is L'Ampolla another typically Catalan fishing village with a very pretty harbour and waterfront, and well worth a visit. The nearby cities of Tarragona and Reus have some very interesting Roman monuments. For more information don't forget to visit the tourist ofice in L'Ametlla.
L'Ametlla de Mar / Tres Calas area
L’Ametlla de Mar is the nearest village, approximately 10 minutes away by car or taxi. It is a typical Catalan fishing village with little narrow streets opening out into small tree-lined squares where you are likely to come across all kinds of interesting activities such as concerts, street-theatre, markets and pageants. L'Ametlla offers a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants to meet all tastes. There is a daily indoor market offering fresh fruit and vegetables, and an outdoor market every Monday and Thursday selling souvenirs, clothes etc.
Although you will find it hard to tear yourself away from your own private pool, there are some lovely sandy beaches 15 minutes walk away or just a few minutes in the car.
As its name suggests, there are three lovely beaches within LasTres Calas itself, and lots more dotted along the coast. There is often a little beach bar on the beach where you can get any kind of liquid refreshment, tapas, ice creams and maybe even a light lunch. As is the norm in Spain, all of the beaches in the area are extremely well looked after, cleaned every day, and many are Blue Flag beaches. You will also find that the Lifeguards are also paramedics and trained to deal quickly and efficiently with most first aid situations that may arise.
How to get there
Reus is the nearest airport which is only half an hour from the villa. Ryanair operate almost daily flights into Reus, from Ireland, the UK and Germany. Alternatively you could fly into Barcelona which is about an hour and half's drive from the villa. Car hire is readily available from either airport, but it is advisable to shop around for the best rates, and book on-line before you travel. If you are flying by Ryanair their link with Hertz often gives good value, otherwise check out Solmar (www.solmar.es) or Economy Car Hire (www.economycarhire.com).
