The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The house is situated on the edge of Amelie les Bains and is in Vallespir, a district of Northern Catalonia, in the French department of Pyrenees-Orientales, is an area of and unspoilt natural beauty as well as having a rich culture and history. It is a land in which kings resided, Knights Templar built their fortresses, and artists even unto the present time, flock to.

The region has a Mediterranean Climate with hot dry summers, moderate springs and autumns and short winters with 300 days of sunshine a year. It produces more wine than Bordeaux and more than the whole of the USA -with over 700,000 hectares laid down to vines. The Languedoc-Rousillon area borders the Mediterranean Sea to the east and the Pyrenees Mountains to the south.

It has lots of wildlife and spectacular coast line with some of the best beaches in France. The area has lots to offer such as mountains, rivers and lakes, ancient cities, abbeys & cathedrals, chateau's, Cathar Castles and Spa towns with their thermal springs and treatments.

The Pyrenees- Orientales region sits next to Spain and is rich in Catalan history with Perpignan as the Capital. Perpignan just 40 minutes away is a large vibrant Catalan city proud of its Rugby clubs, union and league, and rich heritage and strong Catalan traditions, festivals, culture & food.

There are plenty of vineyards in the area and wine tasting is readily available. Sports available from a wide range of watersports, golf, cycling, skiing, canyoning, fishing & walking.

A region of flat land between the dominating Aspres Mountains and the rocky Frausa range, Vallespir is a dramatic scenic destination, laden with steep valleys, productive vineyards and colourful orchards.

Throughout the foothills, footpaths, bridle paths and cycle routes carve through evergreen woodlands and mountain plateaux, creating the perfect terrain for walking, cycling and riding holidays. All the facilities, guides and maps needed for a full exploration of the mountains are available from the Amelie tourist information.!

The 18 hole Domaine de Falgos golf course is located right on the border to Spain, with spectacular views over both the mountains and the glorious Bay of Roses in Spain. The course is defiantly undulating, and there are some very testing greens to find, providing a challenge for even the most experienced golfer. There is also a local 9 hole courses close to the house. The ski resorts of the Pyrenees are all within an hour. The River Tech, upon whose banks the village stands, is a favourite asset for those wishing to swim or fish from a property in Arles-sur-Tech, and on Sundays, locals gather on the banks for a hugely social event with live music, dancing and food, which presents a magnificent opportunity to get to meet the locals.

This area is marvellous for walking or painting: autumn colour is breathtaking, February mimosa is stunning and then wild flowers and cherries take over. Winter blue skies and Canigou dominates the horizon, dusted with snow for 2/3rds of the year. Summers are warm, and sunny.

The capital of Vallespir, Ceret, is a maze of narrow streets and gurgling streams which give the town a pleasant laid back character. Ceret is a small country town of great charm and great trees, very relaxed, but with many 'fiestas' all year, and there is nearly always music. There are great restaurants and bars. Saturdays see the fabulous street market. Del Besbe, which is situated opposite Bar Picasso is the best and is Michelin star standard

Amélie-les-Bains is a beautiful Roman spa town nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees. At 240 metres above sea level and is well known for its long sunny periods, purity of air and relaxed way of life. This town combines the old and the new with a mix of narrow cobbled streets and modern accommodation.

The whole valley and mountainous landscape in which Amélie-les-Bains is situated has become 'station verte de vacances.' This accolade is only awarded in France to preservation areas of outstanding, unspoiled natural beauty that boast in addition a natural attraction, in this case the numerous sulphuric thermal springs (62 degrees at source) rumoured to have magical curative properties. There are two spas open in Amélie; the thermal baths of Mondony and the Roman thermal baths. As well as providing medicinal benefits for a whole host of complaints the thermal centres offer relaxation packages and individual treatments at very reasonable prices.

The lovely River Tech flows through the heart of the village and many community gatherings and fetes take place here throughout the summertime. This area is a paradise for walkers and hikers, bikers and fishermen alike. Indeed, so plentiful is the river that Amélie hosted the 6th World Trout Fishing Championship in 1998. There are horse riding facilities in Amélie-les-Bains.

This spa town is part of Catalonia and so visitors may enjoy the vibrant and generous nature of the Catalan culture and cuisine; enjoy a tipple in the street bars, or a delectable meal in one of the restaurants of Amélie or have a little flutter at the casino. There is also a daily market in Amélie-les-Bains and many evening concerts and performances. Experts and novices alike can sample quality wines direct from the vineyards and have a fun day out into the bargain.

This area is famed for the quality of light which makes it ideal for artists and photographers as well as those nature lovers just wishing to get away from it all and relax in the stunning surroundings.

It also has it's own Tourist Office which has a range of activities available in the areas and a calendar of local events, festivals and markets.

"Beautiful heated pool, walking distance to town, pretty area."

The heated and lit pool is a major attraction to this property. It is close enough to Amelie to walk daily for bread, one way being along the river through a park. There are several places to visit … More
