The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
The Pyrenees Orientales is within an area of France called Languedoc Roussillon, the house is situated between the mountains and the mediterranean sea and benefits from the mild mediterranean climate, long hot summers, moderate springs and autumns.
The Pyrenees Orientales has yet to be discovered in the main by the large tour companies so it still retains all of it’s French charm. Being a Catalan region, the culture is a mix of French and Spanish and there are a wide variety of castles, forts, ancient churches, monasteries and fantastic restaurants to visit whilst you are here.
For activities, almost anything is possible…. Walking, cycling, golf, canyoning, bird-watching, horse riding, caving, fishing, sailing, skiing, snowboarding, sight-seeing and of course just relaxing. Being situated within the area bordered by the Pyrenees and the mediterranean, the climate all year round is fantastic for any of the activities that you choose to do.
For touring the area, Amelie-les-bains offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest are listed below:
Villefranche de Conflent, a medieval walled town Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views Ceret, Museum of Modern art, featuring works by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall among others. Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent caves with an incredible light and sound show St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched high on the hillside St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Prades Pablo Casals festival St Thomas les Bains, thermal hot springs in a wonderful outdoor mountain setting Figueras (Spain) Salvador Dali Museum, a great day out
Amelie-les-bains area
Amelie-les-bains is a renowned spa town of the region and has a population of approx 3500 people. This makes it a lively and exiting place with many shops and restaurants to choose from. It is nestled in the mountains so it also benefits from easy access to the surrounding area for the many activities that the area has to offer. This thriving market town has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market every morning, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!
Amelie-les-Bains is also a famous area for health treatments at the local spa and is an excellent location for exploring the area, visiting the coast or skiing in the winter..
It is situated nearby the large town of Ceret which Pablo Picasso resided in for a short period, working alongside fellow artist Braque. Some of his work is on display at the Musee de Ceret, along with exhibitions by other well-known artists and this place is well worth a visit.
A few miles away is the lake at St Jean Pla de Cort which is a safe and ideal place for the summer swim. Paddle boats, small adventure park and a lake-side restaurant make this an excellent relaxing family day out.
Weather: We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France, and enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months.

Guestbook for Amelie-les-Bains Apt. Romarin
"We had a good time in Amelie and as it was Carnival week had fun at a post carnival party in the town (with our eldest sons French friends). The apartment was great and had all we could have needed." A. Ward , UK - Feb 2008
We loved Amelie and indeed the immediate area. We didnt get chance to do the extra touring round Languedoc Rousillion, it was just so enjoyable. We just got sidetracked. The folder on the table with all the info was brill. Having read thro it and picking out a few places : Ceret, Couillore, Cerbere , the Abbey up the Mountain, Lake Bouliousses etc etc with that plus relaxing the week just shot past. We both love France and think we will be coming back so I have your web site in "my favourites" and will be looking at it for a possible "base camp" for future visit. P. Collins UK July 2008
We have just returned from a lovely holiday, the first of the two weeks spent in Amelie-les -Bains. We had a terrific time and thoroughly enjoyed the scenary and beautifully kept towns and villages in the Pyrennes. The fresh local produce available in the morning market in Amelie-les-Bains needs a special mention! P.Butler.Ireland Aug 2008
