The Bali / Lesser Sunda Islands / Bali region

The island of Bali lies 3.2 km (2 mi) east of Java, and is approximately 8 degrees south of the equator. Bali and Java are separated by the Bali Strait. East to west, the island is approximately 153 km (95 mi) wide and spans approximately 112 km (69 mi) north to south; its land area is 5,632 km².
Bali is renowned for its diverse and sophisticated art forms, such as painting, sculpture, woodcarving, handcrafts, and performing arts. Balinese performing arts often portray stories from Hindu epics such as the Ramayana but with heavy Balinese influence.
About 93% of Bali's population adheres to Balinese Hinduism, formed as a combination of existing local beliefs and Hindu influences from mainland Southeast Asia and South Asia.
To the east, the Lombok Strait separates Bali from Lombok and marks the biogeographical division between the fauna of the Indomalayan ecozone and the distinctly different fauna of Australasia. The transition is known as the Wallace Line, named after Alfred Russel Wallace, who first proposed a transition zone between these two major ecozones. When sea levels dropped during the Pleistocene ice age, Bali was connected to Java and Sumatra and to the mainland of Asia and shared the Asian fauna, but the deep water of the Lombok Strait continued to keep Lombok and the Lesser Sunda archipelago isolated.
The Amed / Bunutan area
Karangasem & Mount Agung
The beautiful eastern regency of Karangasem is dominated by the towering presence of Mt. Agung (2,567 m), the islands most sacred and highest volcano, whose dramatic foothills provide some of the most breathtaking landscapes found anywhere in Bali. High up on Mt. Agung's southern flanks perches the great "Mother Temple" Pura Besakih - the most sacred and powerful of the island's innumerable temples.
Tirta Gangga
A royal water garden comprising pools, fountains, plants and sculptures. It is situated in the middle of rice fields around the natural springs of Rejasa, approximately 7 km. (5 miles) north of Amlapura, the main town of east Bali. Built by the last Rajah of Karangasem as a weekend retreat - this beautiful water garden has great views of the sea and Mount Agung. Enjoy the restaurant and cafe overlooking the pools. Swimming is very refreshing especially on hot days! The kids will love the swimming in the cool spring water!
Amlapura
The sleepy provincial capital of Karangasem. There's a traditional market - but get there early to have the full experience. The town sports the region's only supermarket and a handful of ATMs and convenience stores.
Pasir Putih - White Sand Beach
This is a great white sand beach with crystal clear water but beware of the surf. The waves can build quickly resulting in sudden rip currents. The beach is a great spot to kick back and enjoy a really beautiful natural beach. There are many warungs on the beach serving mediocre food. We usually bring a pick nick.
Tulamben - USS Liberty Wreck
Excellent diving as well as snorkeling! A US supply ship torpedoed by the Japanese during WWII and ended up in Tulamben after she took on water while being towed. The wreck sits in a depth of 5 meters to 30 meters and is easily accessible from the shore. There are many dive centers offering rental gear and guide services. The wreck boasts fantastic soft & hard coral growth and diverse tropical fish. Check out the schooling Jacks and the pygmy seahorses on the soft corals by the stern of the wreck. There are a couple of warungs on the beach serving up local fare.
Japanese Wreck - Amed (walking distance from Villa Aquamarine)
This a great little wreck that is easily accessible from the beach. Perfect for diving or snorkeling. Scuba gear an be hired at the nearby dive shop or snorkeling gear can be found on the beach by the warung.
Good Karma Beach (walking distance from Villa Aquamarine)
A great beach for kids, sandy beach with great snorkeling. The warung serves very tasty nasi goreng and curries and cold Bintang beer.
