The Loire Valley / Mayenne region

The surrounding area is lush green countryside, famous for its cider, calvados and pears, with locally produced products readily available. Ideal area for either rambling, cycling or fishing.
There are many places of interest, both historic (Lassay les Chateau, Domfront, medieval walled town) and modern leisure parks (Ambrieres les Vallees)
The climate in summer is very warm, with long balmy evenings to round off your day.
The Ambrieres les Vallees / Souce area
The impressive market town of Ambrieres (5 miles) has an excellent leisure park with boating, kayaking, horseriding, swimming, tennis, mini golf and miles of riverside walks. The town also offers a selection of restaurants and bars.
St Fraimbault (3 miles) is an award winning flower village, with lake and pedaloes, crazy golf, lakeside walks, bar and a very good restaurant. In August the village hosts one of the best fetes in the region, with exhibitions, stalls and parades and is a must to visit.
Mezanges is a beautiful lake with a sandy beach, restaurant, play area and miles of walks. Ideal for family fun.
Lassay Les Chateau (10 miles) has a fine Chateau with an enjoyable and informative guided tour.
Bagnoles-de-l'Orne is an attractive thermal spa town, with lake, golf course, casino and many restaurants and gift shops.
Domfront - medieval town is perched on a hill a 215 meters above sea level. This gives the town with its half timbered houses and cobbled streets a panoramic view of the Low Normandy bocages of which Domfront is the capital.

Had correspondence with owners prior to arrival which helped, including directions. Were greeted by very hospitable couple, Carole and Stuart with a drink, in the beautiful garden and promptly shown the property. The owners, although living next door, were on hand for any help and advice needed but also very much respected your privacy. The structure of the properties were such that you did have your own private little area which was nice. The gite was exactly as described, was exceptionally clean, and very well equipped. Lovely location, quiet, although still near a main village and other amenities and you could walk for miles in either direction in the lanes in the countryside. Very easy to access bigger towns like Mayenne, Laval, Renne, Alencon, Bagnoles etc all being around 30 - 60 minutes travel time. At the same time, days spent relaxing at the gite, reading a book on the swing, bar-b-queing, taking a walk down to the river and drinking wine under the stars were just as enjoyable! All the above are the things we liked best about La Chesnaie. There wasn't really anything we 'liked least'. However, one minor recommendation, and we do mean minor: There's a small bath with shower attachment, under a sloping roof and so bathing was fine (although a challenge for my 6 foot 4 inch husband) but showering under the roof whilst holding the shower attachment, washing your hair AND trying not to wet the bathroom floor was a not great fun. A way of putting the shower on a hook would make life easier. |

The house is very attractive in a very attractive setting particularly if you like peace and quiet. Not only was the welcome very friendly but it was very helpful, with the right balance of privacy given that the owners live next door. The accomodation was well equipped with, despite the isolation, lots for kids to do(luckily though ours were at home!).The outside space was the best thing about it for us with big gardens, albeit some of it shared with the owners. |
Guestbook for La Chesnaie
We've had a lovely relaxing time here cycling with the kids was great fun. A trip to Domfront is worthwhile and not to far away. The local lake with beach is a must visit with the kids. Horse riding is very good value for the money. Other attractions include tennis, archery and pedalos. Thanks again to Carole, Stuart and Jack for the warm welcome & hospitality. The gite is very comfortable and had everything we needed - a home from home - excellent!
The Smith family Scotland
The Games room was a real winner for the children! We had a great time at the gite. It is very well equipped, in lovely, peaceful surroundings and with lots to visit in the nearby area. The Fryer family is very welcomming. Thanks for a great stay.
