The Loire Valley region
The surrounding area is lush green countryside, famous for its cider, calvados and pears, with locally produced products readily available. Ideal area for either rambling, cycling or fishing.
There are many places of interest, both historic (Lassay les Chateau, Domfront, medieval walled town) and modern leisure parks (Ambrieres les Vallees)
The climate in summer is very warm, with long balmy evenings to round off your day.
Ambrieres les Vallees
The impressive market town of Ambrieres (5 miles) has an excellent leisure park with boating, kayaking, horseriding, swimming, tennis, mini golf and miles of riverside walks. The town also offers a selection of restaurants and bars.
St Fraimbault (3 miles) is an award winning flower village, with lake and pedaloes, crazy golf, lakeside walks, bar and a very good restaurant. In August the village hosts one of the best fetes in the region, with exhibitions, stalls and parades and is a must to visit.
Mezanges is a beautiful lake with a sandy beach, restaurant, play area and miles of walks. Ideal for family fun.
Lassay Les Chateau (10 miles) has a fine Chateau with an enjoyable and informative guided tour.
Bagnoles-de-l'Orne is an attractive thermal spa town, with lake, golf course, casino and many restaurants and gift shops.
Domfront - medieval town is perched on a hill a 215 meters above sea level. This gives the town with its half timbered houses and cobbled streets a panoramic view of the Low Normandy bocages of which Domfront is the capital.

La Chesnaie is a fantastic gite set in beautiful peacefull surroundings. Carole and Stuart are the perfect hosts and always available to offer help and advice and are very knowledgable with regard to the surrounding area. The Gite and games room are excellently equiped and very child friendly. the gardens surrounding La Chesnaie are well maintained and provide an ideal place to sit and relax. The welcome pack that is provided is excellent and contains all the essentials. All in all this is a beautiful property set in beautiful surroundings and owned by lovely people.

Lovely gite in tranquil surroundings and in very nice location. The gardens to this property are lovely and its quite obvious a lot of care has gone into planning and maintaining this gite. Our little one (2 years old) loved to run round the garden and he was free to roam as he pleased, he had a whale of a time! Unfortunatley the weather wasnt so good to enjoy the outdoor BBQ (and who can do anything about the weather!) but this didn't matter. Luckiiy we had a couple of days where we could sit outside and enjoy the patio area with vino, a crusty french baguette and lovely french cheeses! It was nice to sit inside though and admire the view of the surrounding countryside, Not a noise to be heard other than a few passing tractors and the odd moo of the cows in the fields.
There was a stair gate provided, a high chair and travel cot and care had even been taken with a cute little quilt provided in the cot! A nice touch. The same for a welcome pack been provided, this isn't something which the owners have to do it is something they choose to do and that's the difference. As for Carole and Stuart they were very friendly and helpful but not at all intrusive.
We visited lots of places when we were here and frequently popped to Mayenne as was only 20 mins away. Some of the other places we went to were St Fraimbault, Mayenne, Laval, Bagnoles, Mont St Michel, St Suzanne, Jubliains. And on the way home (we got the channel tunnel) we devirted via Paris, it would have been rude not too pop to Paris for the weekend!
We would definitely go back here, thanks Carole and Stuart for a fab hol!

"Well equipped, cosy, well located property with genuine and hospitable owners"
Had correspondence with owners prior to arrival which helped, including directions. Were greeted by very hospitable couple, Carole and Stuart with a drink, in the beautiful garden and promptly shown the property.
The owners, although living next door, were on hand for any help and advice needed but also very much respected your privacy. The structure of the properties were such that you did have your own private little area which was nice.
The gite was exactly as described, was exceptionally clean, and very well equipped.
Lovely location, quiet, although still near a main village and other amenities and you could walk for miles in either direction in the lanes in the countryside. Very easy to access bigger towns like Mayenne, Laval, Renne, Alencon, Bagnoles etc all being around 30 - 60 minutes travel time. At the same time, days spent relaxing at the gite, reading a book on the swing, bar-b-queing, taking a walk down to the river and drinking wine under the stars were just as enjoyable!
All the above are the things we liked best about La Chesnaie. There wasn't really anything we 'liked least'. However, one minor recommendation, and we do mean minor: There's a small bath with shower attachment, under a sloping roof and so bathing was fine (although a challenge for my 6 foot 4 inch husband) but showering under the roof whilst holding the shower attachment, washing your hair AND trying not to wet the bathroom floor was a not great fun. A way of putting the shower on a hook would make life easier.

"A lovely setting and a very warm welcome"
The house is very attractive in a very attractive setting particularly if you like peace and quiet. Not only was the welcome very friendly but it was very helpful, with the right balance of privacy given that the owners live next door.
The accomodation was well equipped with, despite the isolation, lots for kids to do(luckily though ours were at home!).The outside space was the best thing about it for us with big gardens, albeit some of it shared with the owners.
