The Lake District

The Lake District - from dramatic fells to sleepy shores, this is nature at its most inventive. With England's five tallest mountains and deepest lake, two national parks, three areas of outstanding natural beauty and a wealth of flora and fauna, Cumbria's rich natural environment is simply unique. The landscape is a real wonder of nature. Impressive peaks rise grandly, reflected in still waters. At their feet, intriguing valleys lie waiting to be explored.

There is also a social landscape to explore that has been formed over thousands of years and continues to be shaped by modern culture. From poignant ruins and drover trails to local legends and literary works, the region's history and heritage has played a defining role in the county's identity. But in recent years, another dimension has been added to Cumbria's unique personality in the form of contemporary theatre and dance, street art and state of the art galleries .

Ambleside

Ambleside, at the head of Windermere and the foot of the Kirkstone Pass, is in the very heart of the Lake District with easy access to Grasmere, Keswick, Windermere and the Langdales.

There are numerous activities close by including:-

-Grizdale Forest – walks, mountain biking and Go Ape

-Langdale Valley - great for walking

-Windermere, Coniston & Ullswater – kayaking, sailing and boat trips

-Hill Top – the home of Beatrix Potter

-The Aquarium and Steam Railway at Lakeside

-Brockholes National Park Centre

-Huge range of shops and restaurants, plus 3 cinemas in Ambleside.

"Spacious, clean, well equipped, beautiful views, comfortable bed - what more do you need?"

A really lovely house with everything you could need, and plenty of space for young children to play hide and seek! A great location too - fantastic views (when the rain clears), walks straight from the front door, and walking distance to Ambleside. A very high quality property, couldn't fault it.

"Wonderful accommodation in an idyllic location"

From the initial booking to the arrival and eventual departure, dealing with grove cottages was a pleasure. Communications were straightforward, clear and helpful and the welcome was warm and friendly. Homemade biscuits, flowers and a newspaper, what more do you need.

The property is in a wonderful location, with stunning views of the old man of Coniston that constantly change throughout our stay. A walk down into lively Ambleside with its great shops, pubs and restaurants only takes 20 minutes. The climb back up is pretty severe, so I would suggest taking a taxi unless you feel the need to work dinner off.

The accommodation is wonderfully luxurious and all the amenities you could ever need are within. The internet connection needs speeding up a bit as cell phone coverage is pretty terrible, but other than that, we had no complaints at all about grove cottages.

We particularly enjoyed our stay at the farmhouse and we will be coming back for a visit in the not too distant future. 10 out of 10.

"A fantastic place to stay - let so at home but amazing location. Want to come back"

We got lost trying to find farmhouse. Our GPS led us astray and the road signs in Ambleside could be better. Ask for landmark directions (i.e.. turn left at bank) to help get there. Otherwise absolutely worth finding. We had a wonderful time and would certainly recommend it

"Beautiful farmhouse in a beautiful location."

This is a lovely farmhouse at the end of a very long lane. It is very well equipped and it was ideal for our party, my husband and I with our 3 year old and 19 month old daughters and 2 sets of grandparents. The bedrooms were lovely and the bathrooms were spacious. There are 2 living rooms, we never used the second and a big dining room and a kitchen with a dining table.
It was lovely for the children to be in such a rural location, the only cars were those of other guests so it was very safe. That said there is a small stream in the garden which our youngest daughter fell in!
All in all very nice for a family holiday.

"Luxury farmhouse cottage in superb location with stunning views"

My third visit to Grove Cottages and it won't be the last. Previously stayed twice in High Grove, which is excellent for 4/5 people, but the Farmhouse is ideal for a larger number. Everything is to the same very high standard, and it's really spacious so everyone can spread out and do their own thing if they want to ... there's always a quiet place to read the paper or a book whatever else is going on. The sun room was a very popular spot and at time resembled a library!

It's about a 20-25 minute walk to and from Ambleside town centre, with marvellous views all around, especially back over Ambleside to Loughrigg and the Langdale Valley beyond. Relatively few walkers seem to use the road and footpath up as far as Grove Cottages and beyond, and with no cars other than those of fellow guests it's a very tranquil spot.

No hesitation in recommending Grove Farmhouse and giving five stars - it looks very good on the Grove Cottages web site but even that can't do it justice. It won't disappoint.

"Great getaway in the very hart of the Lake district"

Grove Farmhouse is a large, comfortable house, situated in a very secluded area, but nonetheless only a few miles from the centre of Ambleside. So close to the shops, but far from all stress.
All things we needed were present in the house, and we had a great stay.
The only minus, which only occurs if you come for the first time, is that you should know that it is situated at the very end of the street, so where necessary, you have to open (and close) gates, etc.
