The Midi-Pyrenees / Aveyron region
This medieval city is one of the most picturesque located in North Aveyron, at the mouth of the Lot River gorges and at the foot of the Aubrac Mountains.
Classed among the Most Beautiful French Villages, Estaing (population 610) gained importance over the centuries through its rich heritage, notably; the Gothic bridge on the Lot River and its beautiful wrought-iron cross, created by Henri Lesueur (1908-78).
The Gothic bridge (16th century) over the Lot River, travelled by the pilgrims.
Not to be missed are: the castle; the church dedicated to Saint Fleuret, patron saint of the town; the Ouradou Chapel; the Collège; the Renaissance-style houses; and the footbridge with its stone balusters. The town is perched on a rocky outcrop, as a road curves. At its centre overhangs the imposing castle. It is characterised by a square dungeon, covered by a dome and flanked by high, fortified sentry cabins. The castle architecture is particularly astonishing because it does not respect any precise plan. It was constructed by successive generations of the Counts of Estaing between the 15th and 16th centuries. In the Estaing line, cardinals followed warriors and warriors followed cardinals.
The local weather is lovely with spring and autumn similar to a British summer. The summer is hotter 25 - 32 degrees C but not too humid and because it is quite high, it is often sunny but not unbearably hot. The winter is sunny, cold, crisp and clear. Skiing is only 1 hour away.
There are several local restaurants and two hotels in Estaing plus a pizzeria and several bars offering food and cafe life. The spectacular Castle in Estaing is open for visitors during the summer.
Shopping; in the village there's a tabac, a butcher, a boulangerie and a general store plus several other shops of interest. For the main weekly shop there a large Super-U hypermarket only 7 kilometres away.
If you want a day at the beech visit Cap D'arge join the A75 go over the Millou Bridge 1hr 45 min.
Ambeyrac area
The house is situated on the Chemin de St Jacques de Compostella (the "pilgrims way" of St James the Great), which runs from France to northern Spain. There's just a 15 minute walk to the centre of beautiful Estaing, voted one of the prettiest villages in France. And there's a small cafe/bar en-route!
Located in the beautiful Lot Valley in the foot hills of the Massif Central, the scenery is spectacular and the area is renowned for walking, horse riding and fishing on the Lot. Situated 45 minutes drive into the mountains you will find river rapid dinghy rides for the braver holiday maker!
