BookThe Southern Italy / Calabria region
Calabria is a beautiful area in Southern Italy. It makes for a fantastic holiday destination with its beautiful bays and unpolluted beaches to its stunning landscapes of alpines and mountains. In the surrounding areas there are lots to discover from the Greek, Roman and Norman temples to the Bourbon Palaces. If pure relaxation is what you are after, there is a famous spa in Caronte with hot bath springs.
The Amantea area
Amantea is a coastal town which ranks high up on the list of picturesque and uniquely charming towns belonging to the coast of Calabria, Italy. Amantea is a dazzling combination of coastline, rocky crags, stone walls, and hilly countryside. Its historical monuments and natural charms invite you to explore and discover. It holds you in thrall, not just with its prettiness but also with its historical significance.
Just beyond Amantea is the old medieval town of Belmonte Calabro which is still perfectly preserved and is one of the 13 most beautiful towns in Calabria. It is an architectural jewel set on the back of a rocky hill and has the shape of a boat with the bow jutting toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Built around the castle, the ancient houses, largely unchanged over time, and the winding alleys and narrow steps, recessed between them, makes this hill-top town an authentic witness, dumb and eloquent at the same time of past centuries. The local Calabrian cuisine is rich and interesting and specialises in sun dried and marinated vegetables, blue fin tuna, sword fish and spicy sausage. As one of Europe's leading producers of hazelnuts and citrus fruits tempt yourself with one of the many delicious desserts on offer.

We have found that www.skyscanner.net is an excellent site to find and compare best flight details and prices to Lamezia airport which is less than 30 minutes drive to the apartment.
Alitalia often have the best prices flying from Heathrow although it involves one stop at Milan for about 2 hours which is not a problem.
Ryanair have direct flights from Stansted to Lamezia airport. Also there are EasyJet flights to Naples which is 280 Km away.

Although we'd travelled to Italy many times previously, this was our first visit to the South of the country and I have to say we were very impressed! Taking advantage of a strangely small fare from Stansted to Lamezia we were looking for somewhere to base ourselves for the week and found this lovely apartment about 20-25 minutes drive from the airport. The best thing about the apartment was the balcony where we could sit and enjoy the afternoon and early evening sun followed by the wonderful sunsets. We found the apartment was very well equipped, in fact it was a bit annoying that we'd packed so many things we didn't need such as travel plugs, beach towels and DVDs. There's a DVD player with plenty of movies and my favourite thing - an Ipod/Iphone speaker dock which charged my phone up while I had the music on! (I might have to get one of these now) The kitchen had everything you could need so we ate-in most evenings, there's a decent-sized supermarket about 5 minutes drive away, if you do end up going there I'd definitely recommend trying some n'duja or the local peperoncino sausage if you like a bit of spicy food. I'd definitely recommend hiring a car as there's lots of exploring to do. We actually drove to Sicily one day, catching the ferry to Messina which is a beautiful crossing, not to be missed. Taormina is a couple of hours drive from Messina so if you don't mind a bit of a drive it's well worth a visit. A bit closer to the apartment there are lots of little seaside villages with their own unique characters such as Pizzo or Tropea (the beach there gets extremely busy at the weekends with Italians so maybe go there on a weekday). If you've been to Italy before you've no doubt got an opinion on the Pizzas but I was pleasantly surprised to find one of the best I've ever had at a place called "Sombrero" in Amantea (the closest town, about 5 minutes drive away). I had to be persuaded to go there as it sounded like a Mexican to me, but it was definitely Italian and did not disappoint! Inland there is Sila National Park which is surprisingly green considering how far south the location is. In fact I think you can go skiing there for long periods of the year which is surprising as just a few miles away on the coast it was consistently 30 degrees plus. I'm a bit of an amateur photographer and I found Sila had a lot to offer in that regard. Oh I almost forgot, about a 2 minute walk from the apartment there's a lovely little beach that's deserted during the week and we sat there with a picnic a couple of afternoons which was great. Anyway, we'll be going back there soon as we felt a little twinge of sadness when we had to leave and perhaps on reflection, just the one week wasn't quite enough. Highly recommended! |

We stayed here from the 15th June - 22nd June, arrived late off of Ryan air (11pm) and we were very happy to find that it wasn't too hard to find and only took 25 minutes to get there from Lamezia Terme airport. When we got there, we were welcomed with an extremely clean and well decorated apartment with a nice view from the balcony of the Mediterranean. The kitchen was well equipped with a full set of cutlery, pots, pans, gas hob, oven and fridge freezer, kettle, toaster etc and so decided to cook in the apartment most nights and had nice evening meals on the balcony with a view of the sea. The bathroom was again clean and had a generous size and were extremely happy to have the air-conditioning in the lounge and bedroom as temperatures got up to 34 degrees so this was a huge help on those hot nights when trying to sleep. The beach is around 100m from the entrance to the building and so on most days after exploring the local towns / cities, we took the supplied parasol, cool bag and ice blocks down the beach with a cold bottle of wine and relaxed down there, did a bit of snorkelling around the rocks (lots of fish!) and could happily sit in the sun until 7.30 / 8pm. Highly recommend checking out the local areas of Pizzo, Tropea, Amantea, Belmonte Calabro (beautiful views) and Sila Grande National Park. If you are in to Scuba Diving, there is information in the apartment and we joined up with a local PADI qualified dive instructor pair and went to Isca Rock (a protected sealife area just off of Belmonte Calabro Marina beach) for some truly great dives. The website is http://www.miksangel.com and their primary language is Italian but their English is great so if interested, drop them a line. All in all, Gerry & David were extremely helpful, a pleasure to deal with and supplied lots of information on places to go, things to do and see and would highly recommend spending a week here, we didn't want to leave! |
