The Marche region

Le Marche has a hilly terrain, and although it is well watered and fertile, it is difficult to farm efficiently, thus the landscape has been looked after by small farms, and small industries in the little villages. About 90% of Italy's shoe factories are here in Marche, along with some designer outlet centres.

The Sibillini Mountains, located only 50 kilometers from the Adriatic coast, afford many enjoyable, scenic walks at elevations up to 8000 feet. The walks vary from easy, meandering up some gentle valleys, to very strenuous over the tops of the mountains. In every case there are wonderful panoramas and the wide variety of habitat ensures a rich assortment of wild flowers, and spectacular countryside particularly in the spring and fall.

Wine alone could provide a worthy motive for touring this area. With 7 D.O.C. wines and vineyards and wineries to tour. The region has made a decided effort to move towards low impact organic farming methods, resulting in small farms producing top-quality produce. Cheeses, ham, salami, olive oil, wheat for pasta, lentils and truffles. Apart from the lovely fresh food, Marche boasts sandy beaches, 250 art galleries and museums, 150 castles and fortresses, 200 Romanesque churches, 40 abbeys, several National Parks, 170 medieval towers and 33 archaeological sites. Add to that stunning landscapes, sunshine, shoe and designer outlet shopping, Italian ice cream and smiling people - what more could a visitor want?

Amandola

Located just inside the Sibillini National Park, Villa Gelso has stunning views and is on a quiet 'white' road in a peaceful rural location. The ever-changing scenery makes it a captivating place. Only 10 minutes by car from the village of Amandola and the medieval hill-top town of Sarnano. Also not far from impressive historical and cultural towns such as Macerata and Ascoli Piceno, with their cathedrals and art museums. For the lover of Italian fashion, Marche is home to a number of designer outlet stores, Visit the Abbey of Fiastra, the Roman ruins of Urbs Salvia, the 14th c. frescoes in Tolentino, the incredible Frassasi Caves, wine-makers and vineyards, lakes and mountains, beaches and genuine local Italian food! It's all here for you!

5/5

"Perfect for 2 families or group of friends, very pretty location!"

We were secluded in mountain scenery but only 10 minutes from the village which was nice. No worries about making too much noise in the pool as no near neighbours, plus having the two houses was great. Mountains were wonderful for walking and mountain biking.
