The Campania region

If you think you have no idea of where Campania is, think again. This fascinating land, rich in gulfs, islands and legendary places, is home to the charming landscapes of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, the Cilento National Park, Capri and Ischia.

The Campania region is situated in the South of Italy and bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea (that’s the name of that stretch of Mediterranean). The region is divided into five provinces, whose capitals are Salerno, Caserta, Avellino, Benevento and Naples (Napoli). Naples is also the capital city of the region itself. With roughly 6 million of residents, half of which lives around the city of Naples, Campania has more people than Finland, packed in an area which is 200 times smaller.

If you are fond of archeology, architecture, or simply want to see history come back to life, Campania is a must. The archeological heritage is huge: the temples left by the Greeks in Paestum, the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the remains of Velia, the masterpieces kept in the museums, the churches… and, of course!, the Royal Palace of Caserta, built to be the most sumptuous palace of Europe, with its 1200 rooms.

If the majesty you prefer is the majesty of nature, Campania will not disappoint you. The sandy beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Cilento National Park, the amazing scenery of the Amalfi Coast, the islands of the Gulf of Naples are just a sampler of what lies ahead of you. From the underground depths of the caves of Pertosa to the heights of Mount Vesuvius, there is something for everyone. By the way, being Mount Vesuvius an active volcano, we respectfully suggest you visit sooner rather than later.

An outline of Campania would not be complete without a mention of its culinary tradition. Many of the world-known Italian dishes have their roots in Campania: pizza, spaghetti, mozzarella, limoncello, cannelloni… Italians know Campania well for being one of the regions that offer the best food, and definitely the region where you can taste the best coffee. Espresso, cappuccino and now interesting variations on the theme such as hazelnut coffee make the day of the residents of Campania, and will make yours as well.

Amalfi Coast

Behind Capo Sottile, on the far slopes of Monte Tre Cavalli, and looking eastwards, there is the little town of Praiano.

This popular seaside resort has kept its character of quiet fishermen's village through the centuries. Located halfway between Amalfi (8 km) and Positano (7 km), Praiano is just one step away from the two most lively villages of the coast. The Sita bus line connects Praiano to Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. The local orange bus circles around the village and takes you down to the beach and as far as Positano as well.

As a traveller going to Praiano you will appreciate its slow pace. At the same time, the quality of its restaurants as well as the friendly atmosphere of the local cafes, such as Bar del Sole, will not disappoint you. Small as it is, the village does have its own grocery stores and ATM.

The parish church, dedicated to Saint Luke, is located in the upper part of the town, in a spot with a lovely view; the church houses a precious silver figure of Saint Luke.

Praiano's beach is the small, enchanting Marina di Praia, which is situated at the end of the wild Praia valley. The surrounding cliffs have been deeply marked by erosion. On a rocky promontory stands the cylindrical mass of Torre a Mare: a medieval structure which recalls the centuries-old struggle of the area's inhabitants against the attacks of pirates.

"Fabulous Stay at Casa Aloe!"

My husband, 2 year old, and I stayed at Casa Aloe in October 2012. It was a great time to visit the region, as the majority of tourists were gone, but the weather was outstanding! Even warm enough to take a dip into the sea!

We couldn't have been happier with our experience at this property. The owner was accommodating, friendly, and super helpful. She even took care of our booking when we opted for a Capri boat tour, which was most helpful. The apartment has everything you could possibly need - a very well stocked kitchen, washing machine, clean (which is a BIG deal to us!) and tidy, and amazing terrace! It is HUGE!

It is important to note that there are 120+ stairs up to this property, which is most definitely a workout! However, if this is going to be a problem for you, then you may be visiting the wrong region. You can't avoid stairs on the Amalfi Coast, it just comes with the territory. The only other thing important to point out is that there is a home directly underneath Casa Aloe, which means that you can hear the family below from inside the property. If you are a sensitive sleeper, you may want to bring ear plugs. It's not loud, but definitely not silent either!

The people of Praiano couldn't have been friendlier. At the end of our stay, we wanted to hug the older man who runs the till at Tutto per Tutti! He was adorable! The shop, which is at the bottom of the stairs/hill, is fantastic! They are well stocked with fresh fruit and veg, pasta, lunch meats, cheeses, beer/wine, etc. If you choose to eat in, you'll find everything you need there. This is also where the bus stop is located for trips to Positano. The run really frequently, and are MUCH safer than driving yourself! My husband, who loves to drive anywhere we go, turned in the rental the day after we arrived. It just wasn't worth the stress!

I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to stay on the Amalfi Coast, but off the beaten path a little. You get the best of both worlds...a piece of the typical Italian culture (minus the tourists), while still being close to the action in the surrounding towns. Positano was definitely our favorite day trip...by FAR! Stunning. Amalfi was much less quaint and very busy. Very glad we didn't stay there. The open air bus to Ravello was fabulous too, as was the boat tour around Capri. We booked through summerinitaly.com, which was a complete pleasure. I must admit that I was a little weary of them, but they couldn't have been more helpful or quick to respond. HIGHLY recommend them as well!!
