The Campania region
If you think you have no idea of where Campania is, think again. This fascinating land, rich in gulfs, islands and legendary places, is home to the charming landscapes of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, the Cilento National Park, Capri and Ischia.
The Campania region is situated in the South of Italy and bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea (that’s the name of that stretch of Mediterranean). The region is divided into five provinces, whose capitals are Salerno, Caserta, Avellino, Benevento and Naples (Napoli). Naples is also the capital city of the region itself. With roughly 6 million of residents, half of which lives around the city of Naples, Campania has more people than Finland, packed in an area which is 200 times smaller.
If you are fond of archeology, architecture, or simply want to see history come back to life, Campania is a must. The archeological heritage is huge: the temples left by the Greeks in Paestum, the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the remains of Velia, the masterpieces kept in the museums, the churches… and, of course!, the Royal Palace of Caserta, built to be the most sumptuous palace of Europe, with its 1200 rooms.
If the majesty you prefer is the majesty of nature, Campania will not disappoint you. The sandy beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Cilento National Park, the amazing scenery of the Amalfi Coast, the islands of the Gulf of Naples are just a sampler of what lies ahead of you. From the underground depths of the caves of Pertosa to the heights of Mount Vesuvius, there is something for everyone. By the way, being Mount Vesuvius an active volcano, we respectfully suggest you visit sooner rather than later.
Minori is a lovely, well located and not crowded seaside-town at the centre of an Amalfi Coast’s wide cove. Broadly, its mazy past had been following the same course of the neighbouring towns of Maiori, Amalfi and Ravello.
Because of its delightful climate, Minori was the summer residence of the Romans. By the way, we recommend a visit to the Roman Villa’s museum (close to the bus stop). It’s usually open from 9 a.m. till sunset.
Minori is easily reachable by bus, from each town of the Coast. You can also catch the boat and the ferry, from Amalfi or from Salerno (Piazza della Concordia or Molo Manfredi). The timetable might change depending on the season.
From Minori, it takes on average 15 minutes by bus to get to Amalfi. It is also very close to Maiori (the ideal place for young people who look for fun). If in your family there are youngsters and you would rather not give up your restfulness, Minori is a good trade-off. In addition, staying in Minori is generally cheaper than staying at the better known resorts of the Amalfi Coast, which are just a reasonable bus ride away.
Minori is also the place to willingly enjoy in September, for its multi-day “GustaMinori Festival” with food, drink, art and entertainment. Actually, Minori is well appreciated by entire Coast for its cookery. Any kind of hand-made pasta should be tasted, so lemon specialties, and cakes stuffed with local flavors. Restaurant L'Arsenale and Pasticceria De Riso are two landmarks that shouldn't be ignored by the gourmet.
The inhabitants of Minori are well-known for their slow-life, calmness and their strong faith. It would be also interesting to visit the Basilica of Saint Trofimena. It is a typical example of a late 17th century building. It was rebuilt in place of the old Romanesque church.
