Amalfi is a town and comune in the province of Salerno, in the region of Campania, Italy, c. 35 km southeast of Naples, lying at the mouth of a deep ravine. It is today an important tourist destination with its dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery together with other towns on the same coast, and is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Three traditional events draw numerous visitors to Amalfi. First are the feast days of Saint Andrew (25-27 June, and 30 November). Capri is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, in the Campania region of Southern Italy. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic. Features of the island are the Marina Piccola (the little harbour), the Belvedere of Tragara, which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas, the limestone masses called Sea Stacks that stand out of the sea (the Faraglioni), Anacapri, the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas. Ischia is a volcanic island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples. It is almost entirely mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Epomeo at 788 meters. The main industry is tourism, centering on thermal spas and hot springs as well as volcanic mud. The main sights to behold and experience are; the Aragonese Castle, the Gardens of La Mortella, the Gardens of Villa Ravino, Villa La Colombaia, Maronti Beach (Barano d'Ischia), Citara Beach (Panza), church of the Soccorso' (Forio), Bay of Sorgeto - with hot thermal springs (Panza), Poseidon Gardens - spa with several thermal pools (Panza).
Maiori is a town along the Amalfi Coast laid out like the letter L. Among the places to see is the Giardini Palazzo Mezzacapo which has a lovely garden with water fountains and often has free live concerts. One can go to the beach, do some shopping at the Corsa Reginna and the 'lungomare Amendola', buy ceramics and limoncello (a lemon liquer) which are among the most renowned local specialties. All the private beach strips have a bar where you can have a drink or you can take it to your parasol. For all the young and hip, Maiori celebrates a huge festival for the Santa Maria every 15th of August.
Paestum is located in the north of Cilento, the temple of Hera, built around 550 BC by Greek colonists, the second temple of Hera built about 450 BC, the Roman Forum, the Roman amphitheater, a small Roman temple, dated to around 200 BC which was dedicated to the Capitoline Triad, Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. On the highest point of the town, some way from the other temples, is the temple of Athena. It was built in about 500 BC. Paestum is also renowned for its painted tombs, mainly belonging to the period of the Lucanian rule, while only one of them dates to the Greek period.
Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. It is famous for archeological finds, ancient volcanic ruins, paintings, museums, artwork & erotic frescoes. A large number of artifacts from Pompeii are preserved in the Naples National Archaeological Museum. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which attracts around 2,500,000 visitors every year.
Positano is a small town and comune on the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana), in Campania, Italy. The main part of the city sits in an enclave in the hills leading down to the coast. Sites and places to experience include the church of Santa Maria Assunta which features a dome made of majolica tiles as well as a 13th Byzantine century icon of a black Madonna and L"Albertissimo", an alcoholic tipple that can only be found at a small stall at the main harbour called "L'alternativa". The town has also been featured in several films, including Only You (1994), and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003).
Ravello is a town and comune situated above the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, Campania, southern Italy. It has served historically as a destination for artists, musicians, and writers including Richard Wagner, Virginia Woolf, Gore Vidal, Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams. Tourist attractions include the Duomo, two famous gardens: Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, the Sanctuary of Sts. Cosmas and Damian (14th century), the churches of San Giovanni del Toro and Santa Maria a Gradillo (11th century) and the famous "Ravello Festival". An ancient legend has it that it was to Ravello, with its breathtaking view of the Mediterranean and the dramatic Amalfi coastline, that Satan transported Jesus during His second temptation to show the beauty of the world's kingdoms.
Sorrento is a popular tourist destination lying at the south-eastern end of the Circumvesuviana rail line. The town overlooks the Bay of Naples ,the famous volcano Vesuvius and the Isle of Capri. Sorrento's sea cliffs and luxury hotels have attracted famous personalities, including Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti. Sorrento is famous for the production of limoncello, also places like the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, the villa of Pollius Felix, ancient ruins, and the two principal processions on Good Friday, those of the Our Lady of Sorrows (Visit in the sepulchres), and that of the Dead Christ.
Atrani is a medieval village close to Amalfi which is a 4 minutes stroll along the corniche overlooking the sea. In times gone by Atrani was the residence of the aristocratic families of Amalfi and home of the Republic of Amalfi's nobility. The secret of this little town lies in its characteristic Piazza Umberto I, rendez-vous for people of different cultures that have chosen the Amalfi Coast for a relaxing and pleasant holiday. The stone-paved paths between Atrani's houses ascend from the Piazza towards Monte Aureo and Monte Civita where the village was built and carve themselves a niche among the two rocky hills, the Dragone river and its quiet beach; much to be preferred to that of overcrowded Amalfi. Atrani is located in the heart of Amalfi Coast: 4 minutes walk from Amalfi, 20 minutes by bus from Ravello, 40 minutes from Positano, one hour and half from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum and 2 hours from Naples.
In Atrani there are five restaurants where you can enjoy being served fresh fish directly from the sea to the dining table. The menu of exquisite gourmet which are available from each restaurant include: mussels au gratin, fish au gratin, seafood Scialatielli (fat spaghetti), S. Andrea style spaghetti, penne pasta with crab meat, Sorrentina style gnocchi, fish soup, "Crazy Water" style fish, assorted grilled fish, Scialatielli (fat spaghetti) with clams and zucchini, reef paccheri (shellfish pasta), "Baracca" style ravioli, assorted fried fish, seafood appetizers, fish baked in salt crust and tenderloin filet with green peppercorns.
Other Activities: trekking from Atrani to Ravello and Amalfi following old paths used before the streets were built. Boat rental facilities can be found nearby.
