The Campania region

The region is renowned for its marvellous landscape, historical monuments, amazing local cuisine, original home of the pizza and mozzarella cheese, limoncello and much more.
One of the most famous coastlines in the world and a must see. Naples is the regional capital. Tourist attractions include the Greek temples at Paestum, the Roman ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum, the volcanoes of Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Ischia, the Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) from Sorrento to Salerno and the islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida.
Average 28 degrees centigrade in summer, 10 degrees centigrade in winter.
The Amalfi Coast area
The Amalfi Coast (la Costiera Amalfitana) is a beautiful and world renowned stretch of mountainous coastline south of Naples, in Campania. The southern end of the Bay of Naples stretches out in a peninsula that reaches towards the island of Capri. The southern side of the peninsula is dotted with picturesque villages and towns clinging giddily to cliffs; this is what is known as the Amalfi Coast.
Well-accustomed to catering for affluent foreign tourists, the area offers a generous selection of restaurants, bars, boutiques, boat trips.
The main town of the coast is, of course, Amalfi with its Duomo Sant'Andrea, an imposing Cathedral dating from the 10th century and well worth a visit. Other popular destinations are Ravello and Positano. Ravello is famous for its beautiful gardens perched high in the mountains above the sea, and for its classical music concerts. Positano is on the coast to the west of Amalfi, and is a traditionally 'posh' resort, famous for its colourful boutiques and its exclusive restaurants.
On the Coast the views are undeniably breathtaking, and away from the main road and the tourist hot-spots you can still discover the peace that charmed visitors for centuries.
The public transport along the coast is cheap and efficient. The bus company SITA operates regular blue buses along the coast, from Salerno to Amalfi and the other coastal towns.
In the summer months ferries connect the principal towns of the Amalfi Coast area, and can be a quicker and more relaxing alternative to the buses. The ferry company Travelmar operates services between Salerno, Minori, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento. Salerno to Amalfi takes approximately 35 minutes.
Day trips from the apartment by car/bus, reachable in less than 1 hour :
- Paestum , Greek temples
- Pompeii , Roman ruins
- Vesuvius, the volcano
- Amalfi /Ravello/Positano, the other villages of the Amalfi Coast
- Sorrento
- the city of Naples
- Island of Capri (by ferry)
Salerno it is only 4 kilometers from Vietri. From Salermo you can take the ferries to visit Capri .

To our surprise, our twenty-something sons wanted to come with us for the first time for years (the lure of a cheap holiday). We wanted somewhere in the Sorrento or Amalfi area, without paying a large sum, and Acquamarina gave us more space than we could get in any other village or town. One double bedroom is huge, another is smallish for a double, and there is a single room. The terrace is vast, with spectacular views south east over the Med. The living room and dining room are also a good size. The apartment is 10 very steep minutes' walk to the village; and 5 steep minutes from the (paying) beach and marina. Once you get the hang of the local bus services this isn't much of a problem, and it's easy enough to travel to Salerno and on around the mnay sights of the area (Naples, Amalfi, Pompeii, etc.). Vietri itself has no supermarket, just a few shops. Restaurant prices vary greatly, from a wonderful value pizza-place at the marina, to an expensive place by the chaotic junction in the village (Ristorente Vera Cucina, where the bill was, shall we say, inaccurately made out). We found Bianca very helpful; and we much appreciated the lift from Alberto. One day we may return to see the sights we missed, and we will defintely stay here again. |

The outdoor terrace was great. It was >30 degrees and really sunny every day so we spent all our time on the terrace. There are lovely views of the sea, and you can also just see the cresterella beach. Unfortunately we didn't get to visit that beach as it was full the 2 days we were going to go there - we went to 2 others in the marina instead. The club with yellow umbrellas at the marina is probably the best one. We hardly saw anyone who spoke english in Vietri Sul Mare but that was fine. It seems to be a place for Italians to spend their holiday. Only had a few problems trying to explain how much salami/ham we wanted from the lady at a nearby food shop - I tried on 2 different days and she seemed to get a bit exasperated. As it was very hot we didnt do much sightseeing. We went to Pompeii & saw the excavations. We also caught a ferry to Capri from Salerno, seeing the Amalfi coast towns along the way. It was worth it just for the ferry ride and Capri was also pretty. We visited the blue grotto, which was fun. Half the spectacle is watching the crazy guys operating the row boats that get you in and out of the grotto. We cooked most nights at the apartment and ate out at the marina a few times and once in the town. The food seemed consistent, cheap and pretty good. Food was cheap to buy in the local shops. Overall we had a great time and recommend highly to others. |
