Villa Astra is a bright and sunny two-story independent house with the fascination of the typical and ancient mediterranean houses. It sleeps eight people. From Villa Astra you will enjoy a splendid view of the sea, of Praiano and the coast of Amalfi. Villa Astra is 150 square meters (1615 square feet). It features a shared swimming pool, spacious private terraces with a view of the sea and a private garden.

You will be at a short distance from the center of Praiano, where you will find restaurants, the shops and public transportation. You will find the closest restaurant at 500 meters (550 yards), a grocery store a few meters (feet) away, the stop for the Flavio Gioia bus Positano - Praiano line at 20 meters (65 feet) and the closest beach (Marina di Praia Beach) at 1.5 km (roughly 1 mile). You will reach Villa Astra from the parking area going down a short walkway that includes approximately 35 stairway steps.

You will not need a car to stay at Villa Astra. If you do have one, you will be able to park it nearby, free of charge in a private parking lot. The parking space is suitable for at most one car.

Villa Astra is part of the historical center of Praiano, which consists of a cluster of white houses on the highest area of a steep slope of a hill overlooking the sea. The houses are nestled around the beautiful bell-tower and the eighteenth-century church of San Luca.

In this area of Praiano, almost all the houses date back to the eighteenth century. They feature white façades often decorated with stuccoes, patios below masonry arches sustaining terraces facing the sea, and sloping gardens filled with flowers and citrus trees around. To walk through such extraordinary village, declared World Heritage site by UNESCO, means climbing narrow stairways and pedestrian streets. The whole area is made for pedestrians, except for the only access street to the main square. Here you will not find streets packed with tourists; all you will see are the kind inhabitants of the place. And you will be able to experience the fascination and authentic beauty of the Amalfi Coast: one not changed by the actions of tourism!

Villa Astra is a few steps away from the main square, and it also features a private garage at the end of the pedestrian area. In order to arrive at the villa from the garage area, all you have to do is walk 30 meters (about 98 feet) along a footpath with no steps to climb.

The main square is a large terrace overlooking the coastal scenery. Next to the square you will find some shops.

Villa Astra is on the top floor of an age-old eighteenth-century building which comprises several floors built according to the sloping rocky terrain of the place. The house is two-storey high. From the road, once through a small gate, you will enter a little white courtyard embellished by ogres and red Bougainvillea facing the entrance of the house. Next to the courtyard you will find a private garden. It is airy, fresh, and shaded by the presence of tall trees. It is rich in flowers, and it overlooks the sea. From the entrance courtyard, an indoor staircase of about 10 steps will enable you to reach the living-room of the house. The kitchen is separated from the living-room by a large masonry arch.

Villa Astra features very high vaulted ceilings, characteristic of buildings dating back to the eighteenth century in the Amalfi Coast. Such way of building houses, along with thick walls in stone, keeps the indoors naturally cool and fresh even when it is hot outside.

The most spacious and panoramic terrace of the villa is situated on the top floor, above the bedrooms. You can reach it by climbing a small outdoor staircase. The terrace is very spacious and sun-drenched from sunrise to sunset.

You will feast your eyes on a 360º panorama consisting of a vast sea skyline, the picturesque outline of the coast, and the top of the Lattari Mountains framing the landscape in the background of the little town of Praiano. You will find this terrace perfect for sunbaths and sunset watching.

As guests of Villa Astra you will have access to a swimming-pool located in a garden consisting of terraces facing the sea and beautiful scenery. To reach the swimming-pool, you have to climb down 39 steps. Once through a small wrought-iron gate, you will enter a large garden with a breathtaking view of the sea and the coast. Here the green of the lemons and the red of the Bougainvillea frame the blue of the sea. Large ogres filled with flowers and tables and chairs in white wrought-iron render the place joyful, elegant, and cozy.

The Campania region

Campania region is the beginning of the 'mezzogiorno'. Translating as the 'midday' the phrase evokes the sunbaked south. And Campania - with its ancient Greek and Roman towns, rumbling volcanoes and glittering blue coastline, at times evokes Classical Greece as much as modern Italy. You could be a million miles from bureaucratic and businesslike Milan.

Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the centre of Western Civilisation's most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture. The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards.

It was under the Normans that the smaller independent states were brought together as part of a sizable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania. Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.

The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as "fortunate countryside". The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Cilento Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

Amalfi Coast

During your stay at Villa Astra, you will be close to one of the most typical beaches of the Amalfi Coast, the beach of Praia. The beach spreads from the base of a narrow gorge enclosed by high rocky walls deeply incised by erosion.

To reach the beach you can take the local bus which stops about 20 meters (approximately 66 feet) away from the villa.

However, don’t miss the chance of going to beach on foot at least once if you are in good shape: you can descend from the villa until the State Road through shortcuts consisting of stairways. Once you have crossed the State Road, you will have to go along a picturesque pedestrian foot path goes past the medieval Tower and descends towards the sea through a trail dug along the rocks. The breathtaking scenery will compensate the workout to go along the way. Rendering the walk even more pleasant, once you have arrived at the beach, are the small bars and restaurants which feature tables on rocks caressed by the waters of the sea…

The local minibus stops at the beach of Praia, Praiano and Positano.

Moreover, as guests of Villa Astra, you can enjoy discounts at a 4-star hotel for two of their services: access to the beach and the restaurant.

Other larger nearby beaches are those in Amalfi and the one in Positano, about 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) away.

Nearby tourist attractions

Staying at Villa Astra will offer you a place which is not tourist-crowded and the chance of having all the vacation-life activities that the Amalfi Coast has to offer just on hand.

Praiano is located halfway between Positano and Amalfi, about 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) away from both towns.

From Praiano you can easily reach all the tourist points of interest of the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast as well as Naples, the Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, and the islands of Capri and Ischia.

You can conveniently use both the service of the local minibus which goes from Praiano to Positano and the service of the SITA bus, which connects Praiano with Amalfi and Sorrento. Both services are comfortable and economical.

From Sorrento you can take local trains to comfortably and directly reach Pompeii, Herculaneum, the Vesuvius, and Naples in less than one hour. Even Paestum and the coast of the Parco Nazionale del Cilento (Cilento National Park) are easily reached either by bus or train.

In Amalfi and Positano you will be able to take ferries or hydrofoils to visit through sea the Coasts of Amalfi and Sorrento, the coast of the Cilento National Park, and also the islands of Capri and Ischia.

You can also rent boats or join daily and nightly mini-cruises along the coast.

Staying at Villa Astra will enable you to visit the famous beaches of the Amalfi Coast, go shopping for fashion and the best handcrafted articles, and experience the numerous top-quality folklore, artistic, musical, and cultural events which take place throughout the year.

Not to be missed by classical music enthusiasts are the famous concerts held during the Festival of Ravello, and for those who are fond of trekking, there are trails which unravel through the mountains of the coast, among which the most famous one is the “Sentiero degli Dei” (Path of the Gods), known for the beauty of places unveiled during the walk.

Moreover, on the Amalfi Coast, one can also practice water sports, go scuba-diving, rent bicycles and motorbikes.

For those willing to experience the intense night life of the Amalfi Coast, there is a range of choices: from piano-bars to the most exclusive nightclubs.
