The Algarve / West Algarve region
The Algarve has a temperate climate almost all year round and boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year. The tourist season extends from March to October and it only really quiets down in the dead of winter. Even then, there are many days when it is warm and sunny enough to sunbathe or sit outside at the pavement cafe's and enjoy the balmy weather.
Alvor area
There are several restaurants within a 5 minute walk of the complex. The picturesque fishing village of Alvor is 1.4km away and has a wonderful atmosphere, with pretty promenades, street cafe's, excellent restaurants and interesting shops. The local bus service to Alvor and Portimão passes outside the complex.
The Continente Shopping Centre and hypermarket in Portimão is 3km away. It has several cinemas with most movies in English. The Ria de Alvor nature reserve is 2km away and has lovely walks and bird watching. For livelier nightlife, Portimão Marina and Praia da Rocha, both 5km away, are popular locations, with plenty of restaurants, bars, discos and a casino. Faro Airport is 45 minutes by car.
The breathtakingly beautiful sandy beaches in the Western Algarve are amongst the finest in Europe. Praia do Alvor is about 1km away and Praia da Rocha and Praia do Vau are just 3km away; with restaurants nestling in the sculptured cliffs, they offer a perfect setting for a memorable day out.
Golfing enthusiasts have an excellent choice of courses. The nearest is Alto Golf in Alvor (1km) and Penina (7km), both designed by Sir Henry Cotton. The new Quinta Morgado course is located off the Portimão-Monchique Road just north of the A22 motorway and a little further away is the Boavista course in Lagos.
How to get there
Faro Airport is 40 minutes away. Airport transfers can be arranged at a total one-way price of €50 for 1 - 4 guests; €70 for 5 - 8 guests. Cheap flights from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland through www.easyjet.com, www.firstchoice.co.uk, www.flyglobespan.com, www.flymonarch.com, www.ryanair.com, www.ba.com, www.xl.com, www.aerlingus.com, www.thompsonfly.com and www.bmibaby.com. Lisbon and Seville are both 2 hours away by car. Regular train and bus service from both cities.

My family & I are just back from a week's stay at the beautiful Villa Marachique in Alvor. The apartment was lovely, very clean & spacious. It has lovely sea views and a fab view of the pools and garden area. The pools are fantastic. The children pool was great (very safe) and the adult pool was great, plenty of room to swim. The garden area was an added bonus, kids can play or you can relax on it. One thing I was really impressed by was the security system. You have to have a special guest key to get in or out of the pool area, so children cannot wander off. I felt my children were very safe there. Alvor is a nice littIe town with some lovely restaurants. We would highly recommend this apartment and we hope to visit it again soon.
