The Algarve region
The weather in the Algarve is different from Spain. It enjoys a climate shaped by weather movements in the Atlantic. Throughout the summer months the Algarve can be relied upon to give clear blue sky and lots of sun - day after day. From April to mid September there is rarely a cloud in the sky. (We have been there in October with very high temperatures!)
Places to visit - the markets of Alvor (2nd Tuesday of the month) and Loule every Saturday. Silves - dates back to the Romans. It has a castle which is the finest on the Algarve. Lagos - major port and one of the regions most interesting cities. Great shopping in the quiet cobbled backstreets. Cape St Vincent -The Land's End - the most westerly point and worth a visit.
Alvor / Montes de Alvor area
The ancient coastal village of Alvor is now a popular holiday location. The enclosed narrow streets have kept development to a minimum. Many of these streets now boast bars with live music and different types of restaurants but leading off from these are still memories of the older fishing village. The village is well located facing a natural lagoon opening onto the sea. There is a choice of a long open sandy beach or a number of small coves tucked under the cliffs. The 16th Century Parish Church has a prime example in its main doorway of the great craftsmanship of Manueline era of architecture. It is the only building that survived the earthquake in 1755. There is a tiny but charming museum next to the small church of Santa Casa de Misericordia with a fishing theme. At Vale de Ferro horse riding for all levels can be organised inland from Portimao. Jeep safaris can also be arranged into the mountains at Monchique (a great fun day out) Nature lovers should explore the Alvor estuary, home to thousands of wetland birds. Local people often join them, wading through the shallows in search of shellfish. Built above and around sandstone cliffs is the Alto Golf Course. Great views and great golf. Alvor's Torralta beach is just out of town and is a long stretch of golden sand backed by sand dunes. A number of beach restaurants there serve up tasty food and drinks. We recommend "5 Quinas" restaurant and bar.
Portimao is only a few minutes by bus or car. It is worthwhile taking a trip here to the shopping centre of Portimao.
There are two large Aqua Parks within 30 mins drive, also the Aqua Zoo.
