The Algarve / West Algarve region
The Algarve offers an excellent climate all year round and an amazingly diverse landscape from the wild west coast and Cape Sao Vincente ( towering cliffs and huge ocean breakers-surfer's paradise! ) through the western central Algarve with gentler beaches and pretty coves, river estuaries with marinas (Lagos, Portimao) and the traditional holiday destinations of Praia da Luz, Praia da Rocha ,Vilamoura, Albufeira,and Faro town. The Eastern Algarve leads to the river Guadiana at Castro Marim ( bordering Spain). In between lies sleepy Tavira and new beach developments at Cabanas. All of these are within a day's trip from Alvor- ideally placed, just west of the Central Algarve with it's infrastructure for Golf, water sports and holiday attractions. A short journey inland brings you to a more traditional Algarve with historic Silves and the Sierras beyond with the delightful Spa of Caldas Monchique - an excellent retreat in the heat of high summer! Alvor is an all year round destination for Golf enthusiasts. Alvor offers a choice of beaches and a harbour and estuary with a protected wildlife area, boat trips, canoe hire and dolphin cruises. A wide choice of restaurants- including traditional Portuguese, Italian, Indian and Chinese. It has speciality Fish restaurants and a variety of bars with terraces and roof terraces. Livelier night life is available at Praia da Rocha and shops and rail connection at Portimao (5 km). By car: Lagos and Silves are within easy reach, as is Caldas Monchique and the Sierras with Mountain terrain. Visitor attractions include: Aqualand, ZooMarine and the remarkable, sand sculptures at Pera. Portimao (3km), Lagos (18 km) and Albufeira all have marinas and shopping facilities. Alto Golf is 2 min from Vila Marachique and Penina Golf nearby. Or, if you prefer, Vila Marachique offers quiet relaxation by the pool or on the balcony with sea view, with easy access to long beaches, pretty coves and the nature areas with dunes, lagoon and river estuary.
Alvor / Marachique area
Vila Marachique is NEXT TO ALTO GOLF, CLOSE TO PENINA GOLFand within easy drive of the Central Algarve's famous golf courses. Good deals for golf packages are easily found on the Internet. Alvor is an attractive fishing village in the midst of holiday apartments and large private villas with a wide choice of restaurants, bars, small shops and holiday activities. These focus on 2 areas: the harbour- lagoon area of the Rio Alvor estuary; and the extensive, clean, sandy beach and dunes that eventually lead to typical Algarve coves and rock formations as you move east towards Praia da Rocha and Portimao. Boat trips, canoe hire and dolphin watching trips are available at the harbour area. There are public tennis courts and a modern, indoor swimming pool by the harbour and new fisherman's 'huts' - this is still a fishing village with fish market. Aqualand, ZooMarine and similar attractions are within 30 mins drive. Or visit the historic towns of Lagos and Silves. The local beaches are clean, sandy and protected from over development. They have all modern facilities-sunloungers, parasols for hire and cafes, bars and restaurants. Or walk a short distance and find long stretches away from it all. There are classic Algarve coves with cliffs and rock formations to explore. Restaurants include traditional Portuguese and seafood, Italian, Indian ,and Chinese. 'India Hut 1' is an authentic treat. There are restaurants 2 mins walk from Vila Marachique (Por do Sol and Xico) or go into Alvor and stroll around the small old town until you find your favourite. Visit 'Casa da Rio' with a wonderful view across the harbour to the dunes beyond. Or try the beach restaurant- 'Dunas ' with great ' tapas' (inc. vegetarian selection). 'Ruccula' in a side street is this year's new find. Bars include Irish and sports bars but most are Portuguese style -often with a cafe and snacks available. Try those at the 'square' at the top of the hill or by the 'new' market, for a light lunch or coffee, cakes and cold drinks during the day. Outdoor dining and roof terraces with sunset views are the norm. Cosy restaurants are open on cooler winter's evenings. Alvor has its own small wildlife reserve with protected , unspoilt beaches and dunes that form a safe harbour at the entrance to the Rio Alvor estuary. So if you have binoculars -remember to bring them. Dolphin -watching trips(small scale company ) leave from the cobbled promenade area. It's a short drive to the beaches between Armacao de Pera and Salgados. Behind the beach (near the small river inlet at Salgados Golf Course ) there is a delightful lagoon with wild fowl and regular visiting flocks of flamingos-sometimes spoonbills and a good range of waders. Algarve towns have storks nesting (see Silves, Lagos and inland villages) watch them soaring on thermals in the sky. They gather in fields outside Silves by the River Arade before migrating. Drive up towards Monchique and Foia and you may see buzzards, vultures, eagles and lots of ' little brown birds' mainly of interest to serious birders! FLYGLOBESPAN fly direct from Edinburgh and from Glasgow to Faro,EASYJET HAVE FLIGHTS FROM GLASGOW STARTING IN APRIL 2008.FIRST CHOICE have flights from Edinburgh,too.EASYJET and other budget airlines have low cost deals from London and other major airports, also MONARCH, and JET2.COM fly from Manchester. Details of Airport transfers and discounted car hire are available on request from owners. Or hire an Airport taxi to Vila Marachique. Or take the train from Faro to Portimao and then a short taxi ride to Vila Marachique. Alvor is 45/50 minutes drive on good roads from Faro Airport ( A22 Motorway).

Kitchen and dining area has oven, hob, extractor, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee maker, iron & ironing board, clothes airer and a good supply of all utensils, pans, cutlery, crockery and glasses. Dining table for four. The lounge area has two comfortable sofas (one makes a large double sofa bed with sprung mattresses or can be used as two single beds), local TV, DVD, CD / Radio. Double, patio doors lead to an oversized balcony with wooden patio furniture - table and 4 chairs, 2 deck loungers with cushions, small table, parasol with stand. The bedroom also has patio doors. Easy walk or drive to centre of Alvor and beaches, close to Alto Golf and Penina golf, shops and restaurants nearby.Two good restaurants for lunch or evening, are 2 mins walk from the apartment. Small shops(groceries and bread), cafes, bars and Petrol station within 3mins -5mins walk.

A 25%deposit secures the booking with the remainder paid not less than 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. Payment is in £ sterling or payment in euros by arrangement. Our local property management company provides a 'key service' and a 24 hour helpline (details provided on confirmation of your booking). A cleaning service and change of bedlinen and towels are provided mid -weekly and on the weekly changeover day. Please bring your own towels for use for sunbathing, for by the pool and for the beach. There is a breakages/ security deposit of £150. This is collected on arrival by our local management company(cheque or cash). It is returned prior to leaving. Small breakages are not deducted if you replace the item with similar. Arrivals: entry from 2pm onwards- often may be earlier by arrangement. Departures: by 10am.
