The Sri Lanka Southern Coast region

South of Colombo, Dharga Town is very close to Beruwala and Bentota, the start of 130 km-stretch of beaches, where resort development has made immense strides in recent years. Good bathing is available in the bay all year round with an average sea temperature of 27 degrees C.
The Aluthgama / Dharga Town area
Dharga Town
This is a thriving local village with many shops and market stalls. About 4 kms upriver from the tourist settlement is the Galapatha Vihara. This 12th century temple has few remains, but does include a carved gateway and a long inscription recording a gift of lands and slaves to the monastery on the site.
Brief Garden
The Brief Garden is just 1km from Mandalay. This was the home of the late landscape artist, Bevis Bawa. The sprawling house in the midst of this tranquil oasis is a veritable museum of art, containing Bawa's own works, and those of friends, such as George Keyt. Bawa created this enchanting garden on a hillside with wonderful views off Kalawila between 1929 & 1989. Bawa's private collection of paintings, sculptures photographs and furniture (many colonial antiques), provides an added incentive to visit the bird-filled 5 acre landscaped garden with cool, shady woodland paths, many nature specimen trees, exotic flowering plants and interesting water features, highly recommended.
Aluthgama Market
Monday is market day in Aluthgama, just 3km from the villa. Bustling with locals selling fresh fish, meat and vegetables, the produce is as colourful as the saris they wear.
Kande Viharaya.
This is a 12th century Buddhist temple, and is the tallest sitting Buddha statue in the world(48m / 160ft)
which is situated at Aluthgama 3km away from the villa.
Bespoke Tours
Mandalay's Manager is a highly experienced tour guide and driver. We can work with you to produce a series of bespoke tours to meet your specific requirements. We routinely conduct tours to a range of impressive destinations. For example, Yala Game Reserve - where there are the highest concentration of leopard in the world; Nuwara Eliya - where you can stay in a colonial bungalow amongst the renowned tea plantations; Kandy - where you can visit the most significant Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and the world-famous Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage; Sigiriya - a dramatic ancient fortress that is also a world heritage site; Dambulla Cave Temple - the most impressive cave temple in Sri Lanka.
The above destinations can be booked in conjunction with a range of accommodation, from 5* boutique hotels to tourist hotels. All travel is conducted in our comfortable 9-seater, air conditioned minbus.
Water Sports
Water-sports centres are located all along the coast, where a variety of activities are available to suit all abilities and ages The calm river is perfect for water-skiing and windsurfing.
Boat Trips
A 3hr boat trip up the Bentota River is highly recommended, you will travel through the mangroves and have frequent sightings of crocodile, monitor lizards, brahimy kites, fruit bats and kingfishers.
Kosgoda Turtle Farm
Visit the local small turtle farms at Kosgoda. Join in the egg burial by night, admire the baby turtles by day and take a journey to the sea to release the young back into their natural environment.
Mask Museum
Mask Museum is primarily a workshop & showroom. Some of the exhibits tracing the tradition of mask dancing are interesting and informative. Antique shops often sell newly crafted items which have been "aged", as it is illegal to take out any article over 50 years old without a government permit.
Galle
The port of Galle, thought by some to be the Biblical city of Tarshish, splendidly illustrates the solidity of the Dutch presence in Sri Lanka. The 36-hectare (89 acre) Dutch Fort, built in 1663, has withstood the ravages of time. Its massive ramparts surround the promontory that forms the older part of Galle, and shelters within its walls sturdy Dutch houses, museums and churches. This area has a quiet, relaxed atmosphere that seems almost detached from the flow of history. The New Oriental Hotel, built for Dutch governors in 1684, is a colonial gem with a wonderfully atmospheric bar.
Colombo
Spend a day shopping and sightseeing in the bustling capital of Colombo. Colombo is a shopper’s paradise, containing a number of department stores and local fashion outlets where you will find up-to the minute fashions at extremely discounted prices.

We spend 5 memorable days at Mandalay with our two kids (12 and 17yrs). There is no better place to relax after a full week of intensive travel throughout Sri Lanka. The house is nice and cosy, the pool irresistible, the garden luxuriant, the view on the countryside breathtaking and the service provided by the caretaker five stars. He cooks, takes you to the neighbourhood for shopping, sightseeing or to the nearby beaches whenever you want. Bentota beach is fanatastic. All in all, Mandalay is an excellent value for money. |

We stayed at Mandalay for 10 days with our 2 young children. The villa was beautiful and peaceful, but also conveniently located to great sights - beaches, gardens, turtle hatcheries and an impressive Buddhist temple complete with 2 resident elephants. The manager and his staff were outstanding in their hospitality and were great with the children. The chef excelled, cooking fabulous local produce and we only ate out once as staying in was so much better. Thank you to all for making our time in Sri Lanka so special, we will most certainly return. |

We have just had the holiday of a life time in Sri Lanka And that was because we trusted the local knowledge of the team behind Mandalay. We stayed in different locations on our tour, all very good but the best place was Mandalay by a long stretch. Where do I start - we were greeted with flower garlands, petals on our beds, welcome local soft fruit drinks, huge smiles and a team eager to make sure your stay was going to be perfect from the word go. I recommend you take advantage of the chef, we requested local food and left it up to him and were treated day after day to delicious new tastes and flavours that beat any restaurant we ate at, and we ate in good places under the guide of Sudu. The house is exactly as it is pictured - important when deciding where to stay from an online site as often properties are taken from the best angle. The is no bad angle to Manday the only thing the pictures can't show is the clean air, tropical breeze, calls of exotic birds, scent of jasmine in the night air, periodic chants from the local temples it is all so capturing even the most street wise grown up children my husband and I took with us succumbed to the enchantment. None of us wanted to leave to go on the excursions, to our requests before we left but tailored to perfection by Sudu we were glad we made the effort. We saw sides to Sri Lanka we would never have found on our own. We recommend local river boat trip, beach, market, temple - and will not go into detail or it will spoil your delight. There are few things that could spoil your visit, the house has good facilities by Sri Lankan standards and best of all is clean. An eager smiling house boy keeps it that way and an elderly quiet gardener works away in the background keeping the tropical paradise of a garden at perfection. The only downside we found and impossible to avoid in Sri Lanka are the Mosquitos. Not so bad at Mandalay but there so do use repellent from the word go and take soothing creams. I could go on at length explaining the hospitality was in the detail - our every request was met and more, we felt like royalty nothing was a problem so we had a problem free holiday. But do I really want to tell everyone just how wonderful our holiday was, you'll all want to go there and we might not be able to get booked for our return visit! what have I done....... |
