The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break, at any time of the year. It is a stunning Island with unspoilt scenery and a wealth of fascinating attractions.

For the energetic, there are plenty of activities to enjoy, including windsurfing, sailing and paragliding. For a stress free, fun family holiday the Island is popular all year round. If it's an adventure holiday you are after then look no further. With over half the Island designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a network of footpaths that stretches over 500 miles it's easy to get close to nature. Alternatively, if you are looking for somewhere to be spoilt then indulge yourself in the Isle of Wight's fine restaurants, art galleries and historic houses.

There are many, many festivals, tourist destinations and events on the Island which are worth checking out via the official website of the Tourist Board.

Alum Bay

Alum Bay is renowned for its coloured sand cliffs and pleasure park. There is a chairlift and steps to the pebbled beach below, from where, weather permitting, you can take a boat trip to view the Needles rocks.

Walking along the cliff footpath towards The Needles will bring you to The Old Battery, now a National Trust property, (members free), with a cafe, kids activities and plenty of fantastic views. Within walking distance you will also find a pitch and putt green, farmhouse cream teas and tasty home-cooked meals at The Highdown Inn.

Nearby Totland Bay has a delightful small beach with a short esplanade and privately owned pier and cafe. It is a pleasant 30-40 min walk to Totland Bay over Headon Warren. To the east of Totland Bay is Colwell Bay, a popular family beach of golden sand with beach huts and watersports.

In the opposite direction one can walk over Tennyson Downs to Freshwater, passing the historic home of Alfred Lord Tennyson, now Farringford Hotel. Nearby is the Island's only thatched church, St.Agnes, built on land donated by the Tennyson family in 1908.

There is a frequent bus service from the Pleasure Park in Alum Bay if you wish to explore the rest of the island and we would particularly recommend a visit to nearby Yarmouth, Fort Victoria and on to Newport.

"A stunning spot from which to explore the Isle of Wight and Hooray a property that accommodates a family of 5 in comfort"

We spent a long weekend at this property and had an amazing time. The weather was on our side which always helps but the location of the property was stunning. To sit inside or out and look at nothing but the sea and the famous Needles was glorious. The children had space to run around and play, although very young children would need close supervision.
Inside, the accommodation was clean, comfortable and spacious. Our 3 boys shared a room with bunks and a single bed in and they had ample space to spread out their possessions! It was great that we didn't have to pay for a larger property than necessary and none of us had to sleep on a 'put you up'. A real find for a family of 5!
Everything you would need was supplied even a pint of milk and tea/coffee for that first cuppa on arrival.
The property is easy to get to from Yarmouth and the directions supplied were great and easy to follow, as was the key collection. The property is within a short walk to the Alum Bay chair lift and amusements where you can catch a bus that will take you all around the Island, which is apparently half price for NT members. (We found out after our bus ride) For those of you who like a longer walk you can get out onto Headon Warren and also Tennyson Down from the property. We had a great day visiting the Battery at the Needles(NT) and then walking to Freshwater Bay and bus back.
We would definitely stay again.

"Fantastic Family Value"

Visited last year but early arrival of our twins has meant only now getting round to writing this review, Cottage was more than adequate, deceptively large, clean with all essential basics including a small box of childrens toys & family DVD's. Not that we needed them as we were very lucky with the weather.......fantastic location, short drive from beaches which suited our toddler, amazing views from the cottage itself, cannot fault it. We will definitely be revisiting now we are a family of 5 & happily would take the same cottage.

"Great location with breathtaking views"

Spent a weekend here with my partner. Just a short drive from the ferry port and then, as you reach the Cottages, you are welcomed by some of the most beautiful views of the Needles. The Cottage itself had everything we needed for a peaceful, relaxing weekend. Spacious, clean and comfortable the Cottage gave us great value for money and in a location that was ideal for breathtaking cliff top walks.
We would happily recommend to friends and family and definitely stay here again.

"Not enough value for money"

Location and view are amazingWhen we arrived, the house was dirty (kitchen, toilets, bathroom, dishclothes, floors) There was mouses droppings. The owner called the housekeeper who came. This man seem… More

Your agreed check in time was 4:30pm you entered into the property early and denied the cleaners the opportunity to complete the clean and carry out final checks which would have been 10 minutes. You called me at 4:20pm to say you were unhappy you mentioned in the kitchenette / lounge you had pulled apart my sofa (which I didnt even know came apart) to find a tiny bit of dust there was also dust behind a radiator, the cleaner returned addressed the dust issues and gave you a brand new tea were then fully satisfied with in about 5 minutes. You were left 4 sets of towels for your 4 night break you were very rude to our housekeeper and said this is not enough and demanded 10 sets, which you were then given (you only ended up using 4 sets). We do not accept your comment that your stay was not good value for the money you paid £25 per person per night for a New Years Eve stay. After your initial contact when you first arrived you did not have any other issues and infact you said in an email after your stay 'The cottage situation is amazing the place is beautiful' I'm therefore confused with your bad review. I am sorry that you were unhappy with your stay.

"A holiday with something for everyone!"

We spent a relaxing few days in this clean, comfortable and suitably equipped cottage. If you like to cliff walk the surrounding area is excellent, the air very exhilarating and the views are beautiful. The cottage is situated overlooking The Needles and is just above Alum Bay and there is a cable car ride down to it or alternatively you can walk down the cliff steps. There are gift shops and restaurants nearby in fact everything you need for a lovely, peaceful "getaway". A short distance away is The Needles Battery, a Victorian Coastal Fort, run by The National Trust, which is very interesting. A good mixture of either relaxation if you want it or plenty to do if you fancy being more energetic! We hope to return again in the not too distant future.

"lovely place to be"

Booked this cottage as an extra addon to our trip to the UK, to see more of the country. So we wanted to a special place never been before. Well I can say Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight is a very nice place to spend your holiday, we've been there for three days but it was way to short if you want to see the rest of the Island also. Coming from abroad, it was quitte a long trip from Dover to the isle of wight you should at least calculate 4 hours for the trip. (we took the 6 hours touristic route, hastings, bristol etc...)
The cottage itself is a nostalgic old building in good condition, with a rather new interior,
cottage nr 2 has a perfect view at The Needles (see images), very large bedrooms, bathroom with a bath, and a small kitchen in the living room, just large enough to kook your dinner for 4 persons. TV and DVD but we didn't have much time for that.
It is also a very nice place to walk short trips straigt from the cottage, in the evening just after dinner.
