The Isle of Wight region
The Isle of Wight is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break, at any time of the year. It is a stunning Island with unspoilt scenery and a wealth of fascinating attractions.
For the energetic, there are plenty of activities to enjoy, including windsurfing, sailing and paragliding. For a stress free, fun family holiday the Island is popular all year round. If it's an adventure holiday you are after then look no further. With over half the Island designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a network of footpaths that stretches over 500 miles it's easy to get close to nature. Alternatively, if you are looking for somewhere to be spoilt then indulge yourself in the Isle of Wight's fine restaurants, art galleries and historic houses.
There are many, many festivals, tourist destinations and events on the Island which are worth checking out via the official website of the Tourist Board.
Alum Bay area
Alum Bay is renowned for its coloured sand cliffs and pleasure park. There is a chairlift and steps to the pebbled beach below, from where, weather permitting, you can take a boat trip to view the Needles rocks.
Walking along the cliff footpath towards The Needles will bring you to The Old Battery, now a National Trust property, (members free), with a cafe, kids activities and plenty of fantastic views. Within walking distance you will also find a pitch and putt green, farmhouse cream teas and tasty home-cooked meals at The Highdown Inn.
Nearby Totland Bay has a delightful small beach with a short esplanade and privately owned pier and cafe. It is a pleasant 30-40 min walk to Totland Bay over Headon Warren. To the east of Totland Bay is Colwell Bay, a popular family beach of golden sand with beach huts and watersports.
In the opposite direction one can walk over Tennyson Downs to Freshwater, passing the historic home of Alfred Lord Tennyson, now Farringford Hotel. Nearby is the Island's only thatched church, St.Agnes, built on land donated by the Tennyson family in 1908.
There is a frequent bus service from the Pleasure Park in Alum Bay if you wish to explore the rest of the island and we would particularly recommend a visit to nearby Yarmouth, Fort Victoria and on to Newport.
How to get there
Wightlink (0870 582 7744) runs between Lymington and Yarmouth or Portsmouth nd Fishbourne. Red Funnel (0870 444 8898) runs between Southampton and East Cowes.
From East Cowes, travel south on the A3021 to Newport, then continue west to Yarmouth on the A3054. From Yarmouth continue west on the A3054 to Totland, then at the roundabout travel up Church Hill (B3322) to Alum Bay. 100 yards before Alum Bay turn right, (signposted Pitch & Putt) and bear right into large gravelled car park.
