The Aegean Coast region
Altinkum lies on the western, Aegean, coast of Turkey. The climate is typically Mediterranean, ranging from around 13-15ºC in winter to upwards of 35ºC in summer.
Turkey’s coastal waters gave us the word ‘Turquoise’ for their glorious colour, and as if that wasn’t enough, Altinkum translates as ‘Golden Sands’.
The Altinkum / Didim area
Altinkum is a beach resort slowly gaining popularity. Located between Bodrum and Kusadasi, Altinkum is truly growing up to be a hub of affairs and its friendly locals and their laid back lifestyle is a major pull for tourists.
Golden sands, which is also the meaning of Altinkum, and turquoise blue water is the main reason it is considered as one of the best beaches along the Aegean.
However apart from the beach the Adaland Aqua Park, Altinkum Aqua Park, Ephesus-Roman ruins and 5 island boat trip are other activities you can indulge in.
Apollon Temple
Didyma's ancient ruins are 1 mile from the apartment complex in the parish of Hisar, which is in the district of Didim, a part of the province of Aydin. Didyma, is not however an ancient city. It was a sacred place of worship. Didyma's fame rests on the magnificent Temple of Apollo, a building of awesome scale whose proportions seem more in keeping with the gods than man. Building works in the name of Apollo were started in the eighth or seventh centuries BC. For a hundred years during the Archaic period the Temple was controlled by the Branchids, a powerful family of priests, and it was under their direction that the Temple rose to fame. In the 6th century BC, under the Branchids, in the first half of the Ionian period, the Temple at Didyma enjoyed a golden age and was greatly expanded in size. But then came the Persians who attacked the area in 494 BC and destroyed the Temple. Alexander the Great helped in the rebuilding and the remains we see today are Hellenistic, dating from his times. In the temple's reconstruction, the original foundations were used but the size of the building was greatly increased. The decline of Didyma began in the third century BC. In the year 395 AD the Emperor Theodosius decreed that all soothsayers and their like were prohibited. This was a great blow to the Temple. Nature also played its part. In the second century BC, an earthquake struck destroying some of the Sacred Road and the area of worship to Artemis. Christianity was first introduced to Didyma in the fourth century AD. During the 5th and 6th centuries AD the Temple area was converted into a church. The final plan for the Temple was never fully accomplished. The whole area was devastated by another earthquake, that of the year 1493, and the site was abandoned. At the end on the 19th century new immigrants settled and gave their home the name "Yoran". From 1922 onwards it was settled by Greeks and Bulgarians. The small town they founded was called Yenihisar. Later this was changed to become the Didim of today.

I rented this high quality three bedroom apartment direct from an owner of the holiday lettings website and it was brilliant. Kevin who owns the apartment was excellent to deal with, he answered all my queries and arranged our transfers to and from the airport. the apartment it self was just as described, 3 bedrooms and high quality furnishings. The apollon complex is excellent, it is a little bit away from the main town centre of Altinkum, but as we travelled with family (3 teenagers and a 1 yr old) this was perfect for us. The staff at the complex are so helpful and friendly, they will arrange a cab into the town centre if needed, however as the complex runs a free shuttle bus there is no need, there is also the Dolmus which is the local bus which stops right at the bottom of the hill and is v.cheap to take you into Altinkum. The restaurant on site is clean and very good value, we ate breakfast there most mornings for around 80 lira which is about £30 not bad for all fresh juices and full English breakfasts for 5 !! The complex also has entertainment most evenings, however I would recommend going into the main town centre as the restaurants there provide excellent entertainment, break dancing, tribute shows etc. There is also the added bonus that if you book a table and eat there alot of the restaurants will arrange to pick you up from the complex and drop you back free of charge ! Our family enjoyed Pinnochio's, and Cafe del Mar on the main beach front. All in all a brilliant holiday and I would highly recommend Kevin, and his apartment was lovely !! |
