The Aegean Coast region
Turkey's Aegean shores are among the loveliest landscapes in the country. The magnificent coastline, lapped by the clear water of the Aegean Sea, abounds in vast and pristine beaches surrounded by olive groves, rocky crags and pine woods. Dotted with idyllic fishing harbors, popular holiday villages and the remains of ancient civilizations attesting to the inheritance of more than 5,000 years of history, culture and mythology, this region offers a holiday with something for everyone - nature lovers, sun worshippers, photographers, sports enthusiasts, sailors and archaeologists.
The Aegean coastal plain enjoys an exceptionally mild climate, with soft, verdant springs, hot summers, sunny autumns and warm winters. Aegean region has perpendicular mountains to its shores and many valleys between them.
For sunbathing and water sports, the summer months are ideal; for exploring the ancient ruins and picturesque countryside, spring and autumn are the most inviting months. The Aegean provides the perfect escape from the rigors of a northern winter: even in January and February, the days are sunny and pleasant.
The Aegean coast of Turkey offers spectacular natural and man-made wonders and an easy introduction to the fascinating culture of modern Turkey. To make it even better, western Turkey is remarkably inexpensive.
A visit to Pamukkale and Ephesus will be very rewarding. Both Pamukkale and Ephesus are easy to reach on main bus routes (or quite reasonable excursions with tour companies which you can find in Altinkum).
Pamukkale’s cascading travertine pools and remarkably preserved Roman baths attract many tourists. Another visit if you have time is to Roman city of Aphrodisias.
Every traveler to Turkey will want to make the pilgrimage to Ephesus, for its magnificent paved streets, well-preserved theater, and Biblical associations.
Visit the huge temple of Apollo in Didyma (only 10 min walk from apartment!), once second only to Delphi.
In this region are also the less-visited, though still impressive, ruins of the ancient cities of Priene, Miletus, and Hierapolis. You can travel by minibus or hire taxis along the coast to these fairly isolated ruined cities.
Another place of interest in this region is the Bafa Lake, 30 km from Didim. Once beeing a Gulf of the Aegean Sea, again by the earth that the river carried throughout the ages, it is now a lake. You can swim there or watching the many islands on it and the surrounding forests you can eat fresh fish
If you visit Bodrum, then go to Roam the crusaders’ Castle of St. Peter, with its comprehensive underwater archaeology museum, and the tomb of King Mausolus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The Aegean Coast also has average tempartures in the 30's from May to October, often reaching the 40's.
Altinkum / Didim area
Altinkum is a beach lover’s paradise, situated on the Southern Aegean Coast of Turkey. Simpler and quieter than Kusadasi, Marmaris and Bodrum, it is the ideal resort to relax in.
Altinkum is a friendly resort and you will find the locals 'laid back' and relaxed in their attitude towards tourists. You will get to know them quickly and they will enjoy nothing better than chatting over a glass of Turkish tea
Altinkum means 'golden sands' and when you see the beaches you'll know exactly how it got its name, being one of the best beaches on the Aegean coast, crystal clear turquoise sea that gently shelves. Altinkum beach is ideal for children with Flag system and lifeguards in place.
The local people are friendly and the resort has a great atmosphere.
There is a huge choice of bars, restaurants and shops. Altinkum has something for everyone: - International cuisine as well as excellent Turkish restaurants (most of which offer a free pick-up and drop-off service), or if you want nightlife you will find a good choice of lively bars.
There are a number of large supermarkets offering great quality food and drink.
Water sports are available along the beaches also diving trips from the harbour.
Pleasure boats go out daily to the small islands and bays around Altinkum or to Bodrum.
There is also an aqua park on the edge of the town (serviced by the free mini bus from the complex) and also a larger ‘Adaland’ water park near Kusadasi.
The local Saturday market is well worth a visit.
Close to the complex (10 mins walk) stands the magnificent remains of the Temple of Apollo. These ruins are definitely worth a visit as many of its columns are still remarkably well preserved after 2.000 years.
There are many other local ruins to visit in this area (described in the section on the Aegean region above).
