Altinkum is situated centrally to many of Turkey's tourist attractions, and still holds the charm of a tyypical Turkish location. It hasn't been over-commercialised or "westernised" and has managed to retain its identity.
It is difficult to describe the friendliness of the locals in Altinkum. Nothing is too much trouble and they are very laid back and relaxed. No hassle from local traders.
Staff in the local restaurants are SO pleasant and helpful - it really is a pleasure dining out.

The Aegean Coast region

Popular for its peaceful and relaxed pace of life, Turkey’s beautiful peninsula is the ideal holiday destination for lively days and leisurely nights – or vice versa!
Just 3 km away (5 minutes by Dolmus) is the impressive Temple of Apollo whose three columns still stand to their full height measuring almost 20 metres. This 2000 year old site is steeped in history and well worth a visit. A mass of marble stumps gives an idea of the colossal size of the original structure. Other sites worth visiting include the classical Greek city of Prienne and the ancient port of Miletus, both just a short journey away.
Particularly fascinating is the trip to Ephesus - one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Ephesus, Turkey’s most-visited archaeological site, is a place where visitors can ‘soak up’ history as they literally walk in the footsteps of the Romans. It boasts the largest cluster of Roman ruins in the eastern Mediterranean and though only an estimated 15% of the site has been excavated, it never ceases to impress visitors. The 2nd-century AD Library of Celsus and the theatre are particularly noteworthy.
Natural wonders: Pamukkale which is unique in the world with its cascading water form cliffs forming crystallized, dazzling white and frozen waterfalls. The thermal waters have been used for therapeutic treatments since the Roman period. It is an amazing site and not to be missed. Here you will also find the Cleopatra's Spa where you can bath in the therapeutic waters.
FACTS ABOUT TURKEY: Did you know?
Julius Caesar proclaimed his celebrated words “Veni. Vedi, Veci” (I came, I saw, I conquered) in Turkey when he defeated Pontus, a formidable Kingdom in the Black Sea Region of Turkey.
Aesop – famous for his fables and parables – was born in Anatolia
The Turks introduced coffee to Europe when the retreating Ottoman army abandoned sacks of it at the gates of Vienna.
The Smallpox vaccination was introduced to England and Europe from Turkey by Lady Montague in the early 19th century (after Turkish physicians saved her son’s life).
The first coins ever minted were done so at Sardis, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lycia, at the end of the seventh century B.C.
The word ‘Yogurt’ comes from Turkish, which is appropriate since the Turks eat it with everything.
The Altinkum / Didim area
Altinkum is a relatively SMALL, LIVELY AND FRIENDLY RESORT and is the beach area of the town of Didim. Visitors are mainly Turkish, British and Irish, with some 2,000 expats having chosen to live here permanently. The area boasts 225 days of sunshine throughout the year. The resort of Altinkum has been recommended by World Health Council because of its lovely climate and low rate of humidity. It is also a good place to visit for those suffering from asthma.
Holidaymakers are mostly families and couples but it is also an area which is visited by young adults who simply want to sunbathe on the beach during the day and then party at night in some of the clubs available in town. As well as the tourist attractions there also many quiet corners to be found.
Altinkum means “Golden Sands” and with its beaches which gently shelve into the warm turquoise blue Aegean sea you will soon see how the resort gained its name. Set on a sandy bay, Altinkum is a purpose built resort with a RELAXED AND INFORMAL ATMOSPHERE.
This is a place for people who LOVE THE BEACH; there are no fewer than three within easy reach, and all have been awarded the Blue Flag. In fact with 34 miles of coastline, there are many different beaches to explore, and in total there are 11 with Blue Flags.
In Altinkum there are no fancy names for the beaches, despite their undisputed beauty. They are simply known as First, Second and Third beaches. This explains Altinkum "to a tee" - no fuss, just simple and relaxed.
The Main (or First) beach is a long wide stretch of soft golden sand, where you can bask in the sun or relax and catch the rays in a pedalo or try out a range of water sports. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent and once settled, there will be no need to move until sunset. There are boat trips available where you can enjoy your lunch and afternoon tea in one of the many secluded coves of the Bodrum peninsula and try your hand at snorkeling. You will find lots of restaurants lining the promenade so you don't need to go far for a tasty lunch or snack. Staff in the restaurants, as with all the locals in Altinkum, are very friendly and courteous - they are keen to please and nothing is too much trouble. You will get to know them quickly and they enjoy nothing better than chatting over a glass of Turkey's famous 'apple tea'. Don’t be surprised if you return year after year to visit your new found friends!
Second beach is just to the east of Main beach, and offers the same lively environment as Main (First) beach.
To the west, Third Beach offers a quieter environment and its waters are clear and sparkling. Set in a nice little cove you can relax or stop at one of the friendly restaurants and have a nice bite to eat. The local drink is Raki: it has an aniseed flavour and is a favourite among the Turkish people.
Just beyond Third beach is the new marina, currently one of the largest in Turkey which opened in September 2009 and can birth almost 1000 boats: always a very relaxing place to spend a few hours.
When you finally tear yourself away from the sea, Altinkum’s SHOPS offer an interesting range of value for money goods and souvenirs. Well worth looking out for are leather handbags, jackets, designer clothes, Turkish Carpets, onyx vases and ornaments etc. Gold and Silver jewellery is a must: there are many unusual designs and all at affordable prices. Jewellery in Turkey is valued mainly by weight, no matter how intricate or delicate the design. Diamonds are a steal and for anyone wanting to consider a purchase, there is a small old-fashioned jewellers near Dolphin Square, run by father and daughter. Very genuine people who have owned the business for decades and who have built a reputation for themselves based on good, honest selling. Treat yourself, or your loved one to a piece of diamond jewellery - take it home and have it valued: I bet you will be amazed at it's value.
GETTING AROUND: Just hop on the bus (Dolmus): they come along every 5 minutes and cost around 65p. Hop on where you want, stop where you want - but don't always expect to get a seat!! The dolmus runs from early morning, into the wee small hours. Taxis are the most expensive way to travel but Apollon Holiday Village have their own taxi service which you should find cheaper than others in town and it can be pre-booked at reception.
The WEEKLY MARKET is held in central Didim every Saturday and is known as the Pazar (incidentally this is the largest outdoor covered market in Turkey). Be prepared to haggle, especially when buying items of clothing or leather goods. Always half the price you are asked for, and then negotiate from there! Also on offer, is a wide range of home produced fruits and vegetables, fresh eggs, local cheeses and home baked village bread.
Main CURRENCY is the Turkish Lira, but Sterling and Euros will also be accepted by most shops. Note, however, that Scottish notes and those issued by Northern Ireland Banks are not accepted.
TRADITIONAL TURKISH CUISINE is always available but many restaruants offer an extensive menu - everything you would expect from a bustling tourist town. Why not eat where the Turkish people eat. It is a lot cheaper and the food is fabulous!! Try Alo 24 or Saray. Walk up the road from the main roundabout as though going to Carrfore Supermarket - they are just opposite. Best kept secret of people who have apartments nearby. Carrfore is the second stop via Apollan Holiday Village's courtesy bus. When it comes to eating out, there's certainly something for everyone, no matter what your taste. For a more secluded restaurant scene, try Four Seasons at Third Beach (short dolmus ride from Apollan Holiday Village). Lovely uninterrupted views across The Aegean and first class food. Pinocchios restaurant on the main promenade is also well-worth a visit (won best restaurant this year). Maybe also try Circus on Ataturk Boulevard - vast European menu to choose from, with a speciality in Italian food. The cost of living is low in Turkey compared with other European destinations, and Altinkum is recognised as being less expensive than other resorts such as Bodrum and Kusadasi. Food is fantastic and cheap and entertainment is great. Most restaurants and attractions offer a FREE pick-up and drop you home service. Don't be afraid to enquire about this service - it's quite normal in Altinkum. If you do avail of this free service, always emphasise that you are staying at Apollan Holiday Village and mention AYKAR (as there are a few complexes in the Didim area with the words Apollo or Apollan in their name - I think one is actually called Apollon Village). Same applies when using the dolmus to get home late at night or if you book a taxi. .
Altinkum life centres around Dolphin Square, with its myriad of shops, pavement cafes and restaurants. Shopping is a must in Turkey - so much to choose from. Altinkum iteself is lined with shops, mainly in on Ataturk Boulevard and in Dolphin Square.
AQUALAND Aquapark is just a five minute journey by dolmus from Apollan Holiday Village. Alternatively, Adaland Aqua Park, in Kusadasi, is only 45 mins drive from Altinkum and is Europe's largest water park! There are day trips every day. There are 25 acres of splashing fun with more than 20 fantastic rides and attractions for all the family to enjoy: thrill seekers can experience the fastest waterslides. There are plenty of sun loungers and bathing areas for the avid sun seeker. The park caters for all ages and if you want you can relax and float in the lazy river.
Altinkum BOAT TRIPS are a great way to see some of the fabulous coves and bays that would never been discovered by many people. There are literally many beautiful beaches scattered along the coast of Aegean Sea. You can weigh anchor and spend hours swimming or snorkelling in the clear blue waters. The waters around these beautiful bays stay warm enough for swimming right through to April due to the heat the water stores up during the hot summer months. There are all kinds of Yacht and Boat trips that sail out of the little Altinkum harbours and fishing shelters dotted all along the coast.
Whether your preference is for diving fishing or just a nice relaxing pleasure boat there is a trip that's just right for you. The fishing trips are many and varied from the chartering of a small private motor launch right up to the most professional and modern vessels that will take large fishing parties right out into deep water you might just need to hire or find the right one near Altinkum Harbour. Altinkum Didim and Akbuk Fishermen will be based near the harbour and you can’t miss it if you need some fresh fish. Akbuk is very well known for fishing. Be sure to book yourself an Altinkum boat trip that visits Akbuk and you will see some real green paradises with clear sea and natural beaches. I am informed that Taffys boat is a good choice.
HORSE SAFARI: Altinkum has its own horse ranch called Pegasus. They are situated near 3rd beach with approximately 10 stables. Pegasus offers horse safari trips along several paths in idyllic surroundings: you will end up by the sea where you can cool off, swim and enjoy lunch.
SCUBA DIVING: If you would like to explore the underworld of the sea, then why not go diving. You don’t have to be experienced because all dives are supervised by professional and qualified driving instructors.
JEEP SAFARI: A brilliant day out that you cant miss out on! Picked up around 10am in the jeep, head out to meet up with all the other jeeps and the day begins! If you dont mind getting absolutely soaked from 10.10am untill 5pm you will love this! A day spent up round the hills having water fights and ambushes with the other jeeps. Stops a number of times for breaks in different areas, including lunch and time for swimming in the sea. Make sure you buy lots of water pistols and if you can bring buckets with you make sure you do, you dont want to be left with less than others! You can book it any of the travel companies in Altinkum, some of them will do kids prices as well for under 10s so make sure you shop around a few of them. Need to give at least 24 hours notice of wanting to go as they book up very quickly! Really exciting for the adventurer in you. Don't forget your hat!
LAKE BAFA or Bafa Lake, as called by some, was formed by an earthquake in the 17th century. Lake Bafa is situated in between Soke and Bodrum and you pass it while travelling from Bodrum airport heading towards Altinkum. It is a huge spectacle covering 7,000 hectares. There are many small restaurants scattered around the lakeside, along with the remains of a Byzantine monastery, originally built on an islet. You can wade out to it or catch a boat. The lake has three main islands: Ikiz, Menet and Kahve Asar Island which can be accessed by boat.
VISIT THE GREEK ISLAND OF KOS: get the ferry from Altinkum Marina: there are also other Greek islands to explore.
RELAXATION: a Turkish bath is one of the nicest and most relaxing things that you can do during your holiday in Turkey. It starts with a lovely hot sauna followed by your first rub on a warmed marble table or "slab" (to get ride of old skin - ideal to start your tanning off). This is then followed by a soap foam massage. You can also have a head shampoo massage and/or an oil massage. Your turkish bath will leave you feeling relaxed, yet revitalised. It is difficult to describe, but something you should experience when visiting Turkey. If you would prefer to have your Turkish Bath "down town" rather than at Apollon Holiday Village, then I would recommend visiting one of the local hotels to enquire about the cost/facilities. I would also suggest booking it for mid-day. Afterwards, go back to your apartment and relax - but don't lie in intense, direct sun. Have a snooze late afternoon and by evening you will be ready to go out and enjoy yourself.
NIGHTLIFE: While it is not as rowdy as the major Turkish resorts, those who wish to indulge will find plenty of after-dark entertainment and fun in Altinkum, where nightlife is centred mainly in Dolphin Square and in the bars along the sea front promenade. Everything from disco dancing, karaoke and belly-dancing to bingo and pool is on offer: nights out needn't be expensive as there are drinks and cocktails on offer at reasonable prices. Those interested in dancing the night away will be catered for at Medusa, an open-air night club overlooking the sea that is regarded as Altinkum's main party point for young adults.
I hope you have been provided with sufficient information to decide whether or not the resort of Altinkum is for you.
If you have visited Altinkum before, you know exactly why you want to return again and I hope that Apollan Holiday Village (Block B, Penthouse 1), is where you will want to stay.
Please get in touch with me if you have any questions.

Guestbook for Apollon Holiday Village
Suzanne - thanks for letting us use your penthouse for our holiday - it was just fab! Very peaceful, away from town but just 10 minutes by free bus to shops and restaurants. Locals were brilliant and we had great fun with staff. Market was great - too much to buy!! We will be back again next year for sure - Marcia and Yvonne
Hi Suzanne - just to say thanks for everything. The location is perfect and the apartment is so roomy. Food in the restaurant is wonderful and very reasonable. Staff cannot do enough to help. Courtesy bus is great and allowed us got off at any one of the three designated stops on it's way to town. Nightlife and entertainment was great and we had loads of restaurants to choose from - many of the restaurants laid on entertainment every night. Thanks for making the booking so easy - we'll be in touch again soon. (Nicky, Sarah and Faith, Northern Ireland).
Thank you Suzanne for allowing us to use your penthouse. It was just brilliant. We couldn't fault it at all. The roof terrace was amazing. Able to sunbathe and nip in and out for drinks/food etc. Best of both worlds really as the area around the pool is massive - never felt over-crowded. When we wanted a bit of peace and quiet we just relaxed on the roof terrace - great!. Large variety of restaurants in Altinkum - very cheap to eat out. Trip to Ephesus was a great experience. Also enjoyed trips to the market and of course we got a bargain or two! Overall a great holiday and will be returning again in the future (David & Lorna - Surrey)
Returned home after a brilliant holiday!! Everything was great and just as we expected. Local people very friendly, food was cheap, did a bit of shopping and had fun haggling. Did a bit of sight-seeing but had a really lazy holiday. One week just isn't enough so we will be back again next year for longer. (Alcorn family)
