The Aegean Coast region

Altinkum is as lively or as quiet as you want it to be, with over 50 bars, 10 disco's, 60 restaurants. There is something here for everyone for all ages. Checkout the local tourist web page http://www.didimportal.net/index.php?newlang=english
Altinkum beach resort is located on the Aegean coast between Bodrum and Kusadasi holiday resorts, with good transport links to both Bodrum and Izmir airports. Altinkum is already popular with travellers, having weather that ranges from pleasantly warm to hot in the summer. The main tourist season now lasts from May through to October, and in the quiet period from November to April there is a chance to get to know the Turkish nature of this area with restaurants / bars open throughout the season.
Altinkum is truly a 'Turkish Jewel' in the Aegean crown with a friendly atmosphere, and the welcoming, relaxed attitude of the locals towards tourists. Altinkum still has this pleasant, easy atmosphere which some of the larger Turkish beach resorts have lost through their popularity.
Altinkum means 'golden sands' and when you see the beaches you'll recognise how it got its name; it is certainly one of the best beaches on the Aegean coast with its crystal clear azure blue sea and gently shelving shore. Altinkum beach is just ideal for children with a Flag system and lifeguards in place. You can choose to spend your time in Altinkum around the many pools, along one of 3 beaches sunbathing, or cruising and sunbathing around the bays on a local boat, sipping Turkish tea in the local cafe's, shopping in the bazaar, haggling at Didim market, or taking a daytrip to one of the many Ionian cities including Ephesus, the best preserved classical city in the world and also Miletus, Didyma and Priene.
The Altinkum / Didim area
*Didim*
The town of Didim is quiet, with all the amenities you could wish for, ranging from beach-front bars and restaurants, to traditional restaurants, shops and a huge Saturday market around the mosque.
You can split your time between soaking up the sun on the beach or at the poolside, or soaking up the culture at sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (St Paul's letter to the Ephesian's was delivered here!), the 15,000 seat amphitheatre at Miletus and the stupendous Temple of Apollo which is a mere 15 minute drive away.
Beach activities include 5 bay cruises around the local coves, sailing, wind surfing, banana boats, jet skis and snorkelling and diving.
*5 Bay Boat Trips*
There are a number of companies offering this (Ilki, Zaza, Love Tours, etc, with touts in the harbour area trying to get your business). Once you are out at sea, you can lie back, relax and enjoy the beautiful views,
*Ephesus – The Ancient Roman City*
Turkey claims to have more ancient cities and classical ruins than Greece. One fact that is indisputible is that Ephesus is the grandest and best preserved of these.
*Pamukkale*
Pamukkale (Cotton Fortress) is unique in the world with its hot mineral waters running through a Hellenistic city before cascading over cliffs to form crystallised, dazzling white, frozen "waterfalls" of calcium. The thermal waters have been used for therapeutic treatments since the Roman period.
*Jeep Safari*
An adventurous day out on four wheel drive vehicles.
*Altinkum Aqua Park*
This water park is just outside of Altinkum, set on a hill on the way to Soke market only 10 minutes up the road on the Dolmus.
*Fishing boat trip*
Fishing rods reels and bail supplied.
*Turkish Bath*
A Turkish bath is one of the most uniquely, relaxing things that you can do whilst in Turkey.
*Scuba Diving*
If you would like to explore the underworld of the sea, then why not have a go at snorkelling or diving?
*Horse Safari*
Altinkum has its own horse ranch called Pegasus.
The beach is a 20 minute stroll down the main street which is lined with bars, restaurants and shops. There is a courtesy bus from Sunflower apartments & this runs 3 times a day during the tourist season. The local dolmus (bus) also run along this throughfare (every 3-5 minutes) and for a princely 1 lira you can get to most local spots including all three beaches and the Temple of Apollo. There are dolmus stops, but a simple signal will get them to stop and as they travel down the street they announce their presence with a honk inviting passengers!
There are 3 supermarkets within 5 minutes walk (Migros, Carrefour and Tansas), all on the main street which runs from the beach to the Temple of Apollo. This road is the main road and is lined with restaurants and shops catering to all tastes. It's a good place to find a car hire business. There is even a "shopping centre" at the end of this main street with a variety of small shops selling everything from "genuine fake" designer sunglasses to jeans and T-shirts.

- Bodrum is about 75 minutes away from Altinkum and Izmir is 90 minutes away.
- Try Sky Scanner for cheap flights
- The company that manages the apartments (Oracle) offers an airport pick up and drop off service. It is a door to door service which we have used and it is very reliable. Budget for £30 for two people from Bodrum, £50 for two people from Izmir, and £7.50 per person for each extra person after the first 2.
- You will need to buy a visa at the airport so make sure you have £10 in cash per person to buy the visa (€10 if you have a E.C. passport, $10 if you are American)
- The big hire companies have offices at the airports, and there are small companies offering car hire in Didim itself - rates were around £25 a day for a Clio, £30 for a Fiat Doblo in 2008 - but for stress free travel use the agent to pick you up.

Guestbook for Sunflower Apartment
We had a lovely time here last October half-term. The apartment is spacious and sleeps a family of 4 or 5 very comfortably. We had our two teenage daughters with us and so it was great, if not essential!, to have the use of two bathrooms. The aparment is very well equipped, tastefully furnished and we wanted for nothing. The shared pool is a good size and is right outside the door – great for keeping an eye on younger children. The local beaches are a good walk away but the cheap and very regular ‘dolmus’ (mini-bus) service that runs up and down the main Didim road is a great way to get around. We enjoyed the local food very much and there are many restaurants to choose from, all offering good but cheaply priced meals. There are also many supermarkets to shop at and the choice of produce they offer is fantastic and such good value compared to other parts of Europe. The weather in October was perfect for sight-seeing and exploring places such as Epheseus but we would like to return in the summer to experience the real heat of Turkey and enjoy cooling off in the wonderful pool!
