The Costa Blanca / Valencia / Alicante Province region
Altea has a climate which is ideal both for holidays and all-the-year-round living. The World Health Organisation has identified the northern Costa Blanca as having as near to an ideal climate as possible, being neither overwhelmingly hot in summer nor unpleasantly cold in winter. Average temperatures range from the mid-eighties (26-29C) in the high season to the low sixties (15C) in the middle of winter, and even in winter the average number of rainy days is around only five per month.
Altea is rightfully known as ‘A Jewel in the Valencia Region’. The picturesque town looks to the sea across one of the most delightful bays on the Mediterranean. Steeped in history, over the centuries Altea has welcomed (or been conquered by) Iberians, Romans, Moors and Christians, all of whom have contributed to the special culture of these coastal lands. The Old Town, with a walk through the cobbled streets and past the designer boutiques and craft shops up to the 'Domed Church' plaza at the top, should be on everyone's itinerary. In the Plaza the cultural and leisure centre of Añtea is the magnificent Church of the Virgen del Consuelo (Our Lady of Solace). Altea's peacefulness and tranquillity have made it a paradise for artists and craftsmen.
Altea / Pueblo Mascarat area
Because of its privileged location and brightness, ‘a village roasted by the sun’, according to Gabriel Miro; Altea has always attracted many bohemians. Artists, painters, sculptors and writers of many nationalities have been drawn to the town, making their home here and benefiting from the inspiration they receive from its unique setting. They in turn, have contributed to its rich cultural life, and the official title, ‘Cultural Capital of the Valencia Region’, has been bestowed on Altea. The University of Culture and Fine Arts is adjacent to the old town, and now attracts a whole new generation of artists. The University has a Theatre of Performing Arts, where distinguished ensembles appear regularly. Details of forthcoming events are available from the University. In support of its mantle as Cultural Capital, Altea is also a town with a special taste for antiques and hand-crafted goods.
Whether you want a quiet holiday or a fun-packed one there is something for everyone in and around Altea - the Disney Style Terra Mitica theme park at Benidorm (just 30 minutes away by car), Aqualandia Water Park, and the Mundomar Exotic Animal and Marine Park. There are Safari Parks at Aitana and Vergel, Waterfalls at Bolulla, Caves at Benidoleig and Canalobre. For superb international shows with dinner the renowned Benidorm Palace and the Casino Mediterráneo at Villajoyosa are not to be missed. All along the Altea coast there are excellent Water Sports facilities - including Snorkeling and Scuba Diving, Boating, Wind Surfing, Water Skiing and Fishing.
For golfers there are 8 excellent courses in a radius of half an hour from the apartment & many more in an 1 hour radius. The Don Cayo course in Altea (less than 10 minutes away) is a 9 hole course with spectacular views looking along the coast and with one of the longest par 5's in Spain. Further afield there is a selection of 18 hole courses - including the challenging championship courses at the Nicklaus designed courses at Real de Faula Benidorm, the Olazabal designed La Sella course between Javea and Denia, and the Ballesteros designed course at Oliva Nova - plus the 9 hole courses at Benissa Ifach and Javea. If you want to book tee times (which is advisable), please let us know.
